The Holy Spirit And The Nineteenth-Century Mission To Hawaii, Paul Miller Apr 2020

The Holy Spirit And The Nineteenth-Century Mission To Hawaii, Paul Miller

Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology

This article explores the missionary successes and failures of nineteenth- century Hawaii. It then explores the Holy Spirit connection to these successes and the lack of such a connection regarding the failures. It suggests missionary failures in the area of supernaturalism and Holy Spirit listening, failures to which the missionaries were particularly prone given their almost mono-focus on “civilization” and “education.” It then suggests native Hawaiian failures in, first, addressing their depopulation problem and, second, in attaining their aspirations of economic progress. Finally, facing these failures, it probes certain Holy Spirit perspectives as their potential solution.

An Alumnus Learns And Serves: Vincentian Mission In Education, Brian Crimmins Dec 2017

An Alumnus Learns And Serves: Vincentian Mission In Education, Brian Crimmins

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

My Dad would talk about the mission of St. John’s University—and how going to St. John’s was about more than just getting an education. It was also about a commitment to service. Funny thing was—at first, like many of my peers, I looked at St. John’s and saw an opportunity to celebrate the great tradition of college basketball while also getting an education. I didn’t realize at first that what my parents were saying and doing as I grew up—namely the importance of the Vincentian mission—would ring true in my life in such a profound and lasting manner, day in …

Through The Lens Of The Cross: Cruciformity As A Model For Teaching Ministry, Benjamin D. Pickett May 2016

Through The Lens Of The Cross: Cruciformity As A Model For Teaching Ministry, Benjamin D. Pickett

Discernment: Theology and the Practice of Ministry

As the contemporary church travels deeper into the postmodern era, modern methods of education and catechesis have remained. In this paper, a foundational set of principles drawn from Michael Gorman’s analysis of Pauline spirituality—known as “cruciformity”—is examined and presented as a lens to inform and support the teaching ministry in churches. Gorman’s thought provides a fresh way to understand the central theme of Paul’s correspondence to the first century churches.

The paper begins with a brief explanation of the current conditions regarding the adult education ministry of churches and then examines Gorman’s cruciform patterns of faith, love, power, and hope, …

Theological Education In East Asia, Arthur M. Ahlschwede, Arthur C. Repp Apr 1965

Theological Education In East Asia, Arthur M. Ahlschwede, Arthur C. Repp

Concordia Theological Monthly

In response to the 1962 All-Asia Conference of missions affiliated with The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, the Synod in convention in Cleveland, Ohio, encouraged the Board for World Missions to "upgrade its seminaries" in Asia and to "bring recommendations on the establishment of a graduate seminary in the Orient to the next convention of the Synod" (Resolution 2-22, 1963 Proceedings, p.98). The Board for World Missions, therefore, sponsored a second All-Asia Conference at Baguio City Philippines (Oct. 19-29, 1964), to which 26 persons were invited, including representatives from six Asia countries and training centers, the India Evangelical Lutheran Church, …

New Thinking In Christian Education, Randolph Crump Miller Feb 1965

New Thinking In Christian Education, Randolph Crump Miller

Concordia Theological Monthly

From where I sit, I see many critical issues in Christian education. For as a professor at Yale, I see all the winds of the future that blow through our hallowed halls. As editor of Religious Education, I know what is going to be published in the next six months by Christians and Jews. As a director of Christian education in a local congregation, I am aware of what is actually going on among the faithful. This perspective governs much of what I shall say.

Bible Study In The Life Of The Church, Oscar E. Feucht Jul 1962

Bible Study In The Life Of The Church, Oscar E. Feucht

Concordia Theological Monthly

At its 44th regular convention (1959) our church resolved "that the Synod reemphasize to its congregations the central place which the Bible has in Lutheran theology and the importance of Bible study in parish life and work." While in its theology our Synod has always emphasized the doctrine of Holy Scripture, the corresponding practice in the life of the church (as also in other ages) has left much to be desired. Bible use has not always reflected the church's teaching on Holy Scripture. It is for this reason that in every generation the church needs to ask itself: Is the …

The Relationship Between The Church's Program For Ministerial Training And Her Mission Program, W. C. Birkner Sep 1954

The Relationship Between The Church's Program For Ministerial Training And Her Mission Program, W. C. Birkner

Concordia Theological Monthly

The formulation of the theme to which I am to address myself indicates that our Church has become aware that the relationship of two vital parts of her program, namely, Missions and Ministerial Training, deserves some attention and a closer scrutiny at this time. The fact that occasionally the expressions "problem," or "dilemma," or "difficulty," or even "rivalry" are heard when the relationship of these two areas of activity is under discussion, is in itself an admission that this question has not always been clearly defined and a confession that not all members of the Church have arrived at the …

Concerning The Ministry Of The Church, Elmer J. Moeller

Concordia Theological Monthly

The editorial committee had hoped to publish this article in the February issue of this journal as a companion article to the one by H. G. Brueggemann, "The Public Ministry in the Apostolic Age." February issue, 1951. Circumstances beyond the control both of the editorial committee and of the author made it impossible to carry our this plan.

Why Emphasize A Bible Study Program Now?, Arthur C. Repp Dec 1948

Why Emphasize A Bible Study Program Now?, Arthur C. Repp

Concordia Theological Monthly

There is little point in belaboring the question whether the Church needs to further the study of the Bible. It has needed such study in every age, and the present is no exception. Whether the Church of today should emphasize such a study in a Synod-wide effort, giving it precedence over other important endeavors, is another question and may be open to debate. Right now when we are interested in opening missions in new outposts, when we are getting our congregations conscious of their own opportunities with an “Each One Reach One" emphasis, when the present problems of finances and …

Outline On Christian Education, Arthur C. Repp

Educational program should not be limited to any age. Must think of the adult level also. Children need it more; the adults profit more. Church should have a program for every level.

Teaching Situations, Outlines, And Lesson Plans, P. E. Kretzmann Feb 1941

Teaching Situations, Outlines, And Lesson Plans, P. E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

One of the strangest distinction which is observed when men are being trained for the ministry and, for that matter, when men are in the ministry, is that which prompts ministers to lay just about the exclusive emphasis of their office on preaching, that is, on delivering the sermons and addresses in public gatherings of the Christian congregation. No doubt this is the most conspicuous part of the ministry and one upon which success depends in a very vital way. We are prone to quote the statement from our Lutheran Confessions "Es ist kein Ding, das die Leute mehr bei …

Such points are matters pertaining to the transmission of information, teaching processes and procedures, the problem or task involved in the various acts connected with the stimulation of self-activity and the motivation of learning and other considerations pertaining to curriculum construction.

Outline For Sermon On Chrisitan Education, Paul Koenig Sep 1937

Outline For Sermon On Chrisitan Education, Paul Koenig

Concordia Theological Monthly

"Is the young man safe?" That was the anxious Iinquiry of a worried father. Is the young man or woman safe? Are the children safe? This should be the anxious question of the Church. "Whether or not they are safe, what will become of them later in life, depends to a very great extent on what we do for them during their childhood days, upon the training we give them.” Much emphasis is laid in our country on education. One out of every four persons is said to be enrolled in quest of some form of education.

The Pastor And Intracongreptional Organizations, W. E. Hohenstein Jul 1937

The Pastor And Intracongreptional Organizations, W. E. Hohenstein

Concordia Theological Monthly

Little has been written on the history of intracongregational societies, except with reference to young people's societies. The ladies' aid is the oldest society within the congregations of our synodical organization. Then follows the young people's society (or societies) and, more recently, the men's club. Some congregations with parish-schools have a parent-teachers' organization and in connection with it a preschool mothers' circle.
