The Social Construction Of Winston Churchill: How Life Experiences Shaped The Identity Of A Wartime Legend, Molly Elisabeth Smith
The Social Construction Of Winston Churchill: How Life Experiences Shaped The Identity Of A Wartime Legend, Molly Elisabeth Smith
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
While the theory of social constructivism in international relations may not be the most common, it has appeared in different forms throughout the twentieth century and has gained popularity in recent years. Focusing on the formation of - and potential for change in - identities and interests, constructivism allows for the consideration of both ideational and behavioral factors in studying actors of the international community. Pairing these concepts with principles from both social identity theory and political psychology, one can observe the constructivist development of identities and interests of a political individual, such as Winston Churchill. Churchill's unique life experience …

The way in which the American Civil War is remembered varies from one region to another. People, places, and events bring moments of pride and sorrow for those who remember, and distinct figures rise and fade into memory over time. Some individuals, however, cling to their place in history through the words of those who remember them. For the state ofIndiana, I feel as if one individual in question is overlooked. We remember Benjamin Harrison, the future president, born in Ohio, serving as a colonel to the 70th Indiana, and eventually a general over an entire brigade. We remember Governor …

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
This thesis will examine gendered political culture and masculinity in Indiana during the Progressive Era, leading up to the enfranchisement of women. Using articles from newspapers and periodicals, this work will examine how women were presented in the public sphere, how they were methodically portrayed as the lighter sex, used for advertising for clothing or appliances and never taken seriously as political figures. Then, this paper will ex plain the profile of women's suffrage in Indiana, how the women in this state began the fight for the vote, the women and the conventions that carried it onward, and finally their …

Senator Albert J. Beveridge And The Politics Of Imperialist Rationale, Leone B. Little
Graduate Thesis Collection
This thesis is an unbiased attempt to look a Senator Albert Jeremiah Beveridge, a man who made history in his own time in his own way. Moreover, this thesis attempt to objectively present Senator Beveridge in the context of the era in which he lived as a generating force in America's colonial adventure at the turn of the century.
Senator Albert J. Beveridge, a Hamiltonian nationalist by inheritance, believed in a strong central government. Furthermore, he believed that the end of government should be the gaining of power and material forces, redeeming the redeemable nations of the world and subjugating …
The Indiana Congressional Delegation And Foreign Policy Issues 1939-1941, Loretta S. Glaze
The Indiana Congressional Delegation And Foreign Policy Issues 1939-1941, Loretta S. Glaze
Graduate Thesis Collection
This paper is an examination of the foreign policy attitudes of Indiana's United States Senators and Representatives during the critical years before the Second World War. My purpose is to determine whether these particular Mid-Westerners were a part of the isolationist bloc in Congress which exerted a significant influence on the formulation of foreign policy. The scope of the study is limited to an elucidation of the individual views as expressed in Congress b the members of the delegation and an analysis of the campaign for re-election waged by each of them as it relates to the broader issue.

The Mccarthy Campaign In Indianapolis (1968), Carlotta B. Anderson
Graduate Thesis Collection
This paper is about the primary campaign of Senator Eugene McCarthy in the State of Indiana in 1968. It will focus its attention on Indianapolis, the largest city and the capital of the state, and an area where the Senator did quite poorly. (1) Though some magazine articles, newspaper stories and books have been useful, this paper is basically the campaign as viewed by 20 participants. Without their cooperation, it could not have been written.

Soviet-U.S. Relations 1917-1957, As Reflected In Soviet Anti-American Graphic Propaganda, William Frederick Alsop Jr.
Graduate Thesis Collection
The present study is an attempt to bring into focus one of the many bases of party power over Soviet citizens. It is no great revelation that the Soviet government has long indulged in anti-American propanda, but the continuity, elaboratness and virulence of ths "crusade of hatred" demands further study. It is essential that such study be undertaken parallel with an appraisal of Soviet-American relations since 1917.
In outlining the chronological development of anti-American libel campaign, some space will be devoted to methodology, technology and apparent purposes of the Soviet propagandists. Space limitations preclude an elaborate study of Soviet propaganda …
The Foreign Policy Of Harry S. Truman, Patricia Reagan Slater
The Foreign Policy Of Harry S. Truman, Patricia Reagan Slater
Graduate Thesis Collection
Without knowing it, a professor of mine, Dr. Emma Lou Thornbrough, stimulated my interest in President Truman when she stated in a freshman history course that Harry S. Truman would go down in history as one of the greatest American Presidents if not the greatest because of his ingenuity in foreign policy. The exact purporse of this paper is to examine these programs.

The Attitude Of Indiana's Congressional Delegation During The Civil War Toward Slavery And The Negro: 1861-1865, Emma T. Randall
Graduate Thesis Collection
In this thesis I have examined the attitudes on the Negro question of the members if the Indiana delegation to the Congress of the United States during the period 1861-1865. Two Congresses were is session during this period--the Thirty-seventh and the Thirty-eighth. The Globe and newspapers of the period have been my two primary sources of information. Every shade of opinion was expressed ranging from the utterances of so-called Abolitionist Republican George W. Julian, to the ultra-conservative sentiments voiced by Daniel Voorhees, Democrat.
Indiana And The Adoption And Ratification Of The Fourteenth Amendment, Ellsworth Shade
Indiana And The Adoption And Ratification Of The Fourteenth Amendment, Ellsworth Shade
Graduate Thesis Collection
In this study I have attempted to present the reaction of a Northern state, Indiana, to the movement for the adoption and ratification of the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. The significance of such a study results from the position of this amendment as the foundation of the Republican party's programs of national reconstruction and of Indiana as an important state in the movement for ratification. Of necessity, such a presentation involves a careful examination of the background of the two major political parties in Indiana as well as an investigation of the attitude of the …

The Noble Brothers And Early Public Improvements In Indiana, Ruth Esther Amos
The Noble Brothers And Early Public Improvements In Indiana, Ruth Esther Amos
Graduate Thesis Collection
The years from 1810 to 1840 deal with one of the most decisive periods in Indiana's history, first as a territory and later as a state. Few periods have seen greater political and material development. During these years great problems, such as the organization of the state government, the disposition of the public lands by the Federal government, and the construction of internal improvements by the national and state governments, had to be solved by those who bore the responsibilities of public office. Great national political movements were in the making. These matured into powerful forces, shaping not only national …

This thesis was assigned by the Department of German principally to learn through the study of the German newspapers of the day what influence the German-American population of Indiana might have had upon the election of Governor Conrad baker and also upon his whole administration as such; since Governor Baker was of German descent and the act, August 16, 1859, which provided when the German language should be taught in the common schools, also took effect when Baker was Governor of Indiana.

Some Aspects Of The National Land System As Seen In The Jeffersonville, Indiana, Land Office, Russell W. Curtis
Graduate Thesis Collection
Land legislation has long been regarded by many historians as the "driest of historical deadwood." John Fiske has said, however, "if the subject is dull in itself it is closely related to some of the most interesting phases of our history. Without some knowledge of the land system, a study of the westward movement would be only superficial."

The Diplomatic Relations Between China And Japan Since Russo-Japanese War, Yu M. Chen
Graduate Thesis Collection
The relations between China and Japan in a political or diplomatic sense are only of modern origin. During long centuries the dealings between these two countries were very unimportant, if not non-existent. Nippon, in the first instance, had borrowed from the Middle Kingdom of her literature, her arts, her fashions and her philosophies.
