Due to overwhelming patriarchal hegemonies that women – white women, rich women, young women, and cis women – continue to uphold, feminism struggles to serve all women justly. To combat this negligence in feminism’s fourth-wave movement, I will use this thesis to highlight ways that Black feminist poets have not only shaped feminist theory through their own contributions, but also have prolonged and saved the livelihood of both gender and racial equality. For many, if it was even possible, an escape was needed. Any outlet that could provide a way to cope with and verbalize their experiences was an endeavor worth undertaking. The arts, especially poetry, was a way those within the wartime eras could express and process what they had endured.

Ouachita Baptist University’s Department of Language and Literature will host poet George Drew on Monday, April 4, for a reading beginning at 6 p.m. in Hickingbotham Hall’s Young Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.
Drew is an author and poet originally from Mississippi whose work has been published in journals across the country. His poetry has recently been anthologized in “The Southern Poetry Anthology, II: Mississippi,” and his collection “American Cool” won the Adirondack Literary Award for the best poetry book of 2009.
