Chamisa: A Journal of Literary, Performance, and Visual Arts of the Greater Southwest

The Pecos Valley Series is an oral history project developed over two years whose aim was to capture the cultural practices in agriculture and activism that is evident to the cultural identities of the northern New Mexico region. Participants include folks whose family genealogy has been tied to the Valley for hundreds of years, while also including transplant perspectives to demonstrate the complexity of placemaking. The Pecos Valley Series, was produced in what Nuevo Mexicano scholars term Querencia- a deep love for place and its history. Justice occupies space, mentally and physically and is the result of multiple, constantly evolving struggles for balance in Xicanx communities. It is not a one-dimensional conceptual theory of law, but, rather, it is visible, tangible, and experiential movement. To me justice resides is my grandmother’s hands. The seeds that were given to us by our ancestors, who developed a relationship with them over time, allows us to put those seeds in the ground and watch them grow. However, the muddy handprints on the walls of the abandoned adobe in the Sangre de Cristo Land Grant in New Mexico clearly communicate …

The missing and murdered Indigenous women epidemic is an issue currently affecting Indigenous people in North America. To articulate my concept visually, old photographs that showcase American culture (predominantly white) are drawn on, cut-up, and recomposed into portraits of missing Navajo women.
