The text discusses the historial-political character attributed by Heidegger to the artwork in his 1936 essay “The origin of the work of art”. The main argument is that Heidegger’s analysis of the artwork is simultaneously an inquiry into the possibility of a new beginning in history by means of a genuine appropriation of history, a subject-matter that was altogether absent during the project of fundamental ontology. The essay on the artwork is considered as a first step in Heidegger’s formulation of his later thesis concerning Western history as the history of Being. This paper examines the distinction made by Arthur C. Danto between artworks and what he terms "mere real things." It presents an eighteenth-century tool for sifting grain (a riddle) as a case study in the contexts of first, the house of its first known owner, General Artemas Ward (1727-1800); second, an exhibition 2006-7 drawn from the contents of that house pointedly held in an art museum; and, third, the likely maker of the object, a member of Hassanimisco Band of Nipmuc Indians.
