The Normative Underpinnings Of Taxation, Sagit Leviner Dr.
The Normative Underpinnings Of Taxation, Sagit Leviner Dr.
Sagit Leviner Dr.
Questions about the appropriate rules and mechanisms of taxation are, first and foremost, questions concerning the nature of society. What can be taxed, what cannot, for what purpose, when, and how, are all matters that go to the heart of society and, in particular, concern society’s underlying beliefs and values vis-à-vis the meaning and attainment of justice. This Article explores the role of normative values and theory in tax policymaking. It suggests that a candid elaboration of normative perspectives, and how they shed light on taxation, could lead to a better understanding of society as well as a better tax …
Dossier Chris Marker: The Suffering Image, Gavin W. Keeney
Dossier Chris Marker: The Suffering Image, Gavin W. Keeney
Gavin W Keeney
Dossier Chris Marker is a study of a late-modern chiasmus, impersonal-personal agency, as it comes to expression in the works of French artist and filmmaker Chris Marker as the dynamic interplay of political and subjective agency. As chiasmus, the complementary halves of this often-apocalyptic dynamis (a semi-catastrophic, temporal or historical force-field) also – arguably – secretly agree to meet, through the work of art, in the futural. Consistent with the classical figure of concordia discors, these irreducible warring aspects of life experience are, in fact, resolved in an atemporal and ahistorical moment that inhabits the work of art from its …

Prophecy And The Perfect Political Order: The Political Theology Of Leo Strauss, Haim חיים O. Rechnitzer רכניצר
Haim O Rechnitzer חיים א. רכניצר
The theological-political problem, the inherent tensions between religion, human intellect and political society are the focus of the book Philosophy and the Perfect Political Order: the Political Theology of Leo Strauss. Strauss, (1899-1973) one of the greatest scholars of political philosophy, never produced an independent philosophy. Instead, his philosophical thought is entwined within commentary on the works of Maimonides, Hobbes, Spinoza, Nietzsche and others. In this book, it is reconstructed through a comprehensive investigation of his works. Strauss placed himself in opposition to his teachers and colleagues Herman Cohen, Franz Rosenzweig, and Martin Buber. He challenged their syntheses of Judaism …

Beyond Empiricism: Realizing The Ethical Mission Of Management, Julian Friedland
Beyond Empiricism: Realizing The Ethical Mission Of Management, Julian Friedland
Julian Friedland
Research into the proper mission of business falls within the context of theoretical and applied ethics. And ethics is fast becoming a part of required business school curricula. However, while business ethics research occasionally appears in high-profile venues, it does not yet enjoy a regular place within any top management journal. I offer a partial explanation of this paradox and suggestions for resolving it. I begin by discussing the standard conception of human nature given by neoclassical economics as disseminated in business schools; showing it is a significant obstacle to an accurate conception of ethics and how this limits consideration …

Ideologies: The Prisons Of Modern People, Ferit Uslu

We can examine and assess ideologies in different ways: Sociological, physiological and historical ways are among those. But here, I will analyze and assess ideologies according to their epistemological structure and try to give reasons of why they are prisons of human mind and modern people.

On The Political Feasibility Of Universal Basic Income, Jurgen De Wispelaere, Jose A. Noguera
On The Political Feasibility Of Universal Basic Income, Jurgen De Wispelaere, Jose A. Noguera
Jurgen De Wispelaere
For much of the last two decades, debate around the proposal of a universal basic income (BI) centered on arguing the ethical and economic case for instituting a policy that grants each adult citizen a guaranteed income as a right, without a means test or work requirement. The question of how to bring about such a policy—the question of political feasibility—has only recently gained traction amongst BI advocates. Leaving aside some notable exceptions, much work remains to be done to further our understanding of the challenges faced by BI advocates and the strategies available to overcome these. In this chapter, …

Are social marketers really ethical? This essay extends Brenkert’s (2001, 2002) exploration of some of the ethical issues that confront, or perhaps ought to confront social marketers. It contributes to social marketing by adding to the list of ‘mythunderstandings’ offered by Donovan (2011) as follows: social marketing is not inherently and ethically good (even though “social good” is the objective). The implication for social marketing is that the notion of “doing good” needs to be subject to reasonable doubt and critical thinking rather than supported by untrammelled belief.

When Nicolae Ceauşescu delivered his final speech to the crowd gathered below Bucharest'sCentral Committee headquarters, he extended his “revolutionary” greetings. Harun Farocki's documentary, Videograms of a Revolution, captures the moment when the crowd turned, and booed his words, instead of the cheers that the sovereign had become accustomed to over his 25 year tenure as Romania's dictator. When the jeering began, the cameras faltered, momentarily tilted up towards the sky from their previously fixed position on the figure on the balcony, before cutting out all together. Static aired for a few seconds, before the cameras once again began filming, but …

Plan De Tesis: La Representación De La Niñez Y Adolescencia En Los Medios Escritos, Andres Sefla
ANDRES SEFLA
Licensing Parents To Protect Our Children?, Jurgen De Wispelaere, Daniel Weinstock
Licensing Parents To Protect Our Children?, Jurgen De Wispelaere, Daniel Weinstock
Jurgen De Wispelaere
In this paper we re-examine Hugh LaFollette’s proposal that the state carefully determine the eligibility and suitability of prospective parents before granting them a ‘license to parent’. Assuming a prima facie case for licensing parents grounded in our duty to promote the welfare of the child, we offer several considerations that complicate LaFollette’s radical proposal. We suggest that LaFollette can only escape these problems by revising his proposal in a way that renders the license effectively obsolete, a route he implicitly adopts in his recent revisiting of the licensing proposal. We conclude that there is little merit in the idea …
