The Ethics Of Tax Evasion: A Quantitative Study Of French Bba Students, Dylan Kissane, Yuriy Barabantsev Dec 2010

The Ethics Of Tax Evasion: A Quantitative Study Of French Bba Students, Dylan Kissane, Yuriy Barabantsev

Dylan Kissane

The subject of ethical action in business has taken on special significance in recent years. With the business world rocked by ethical lapses and associated scandals at Enron, WorldCom and Tyco in the early part of the decade and then, in a time of global financial crisis, stunned again by multi-billion dollar frauds such as that at Société Générale, there is a new push to study the ethical and unethical behaviour of business people and future business people. While business schools have long been lauded for their preparation of students for the rigours of the world of business, finance and …

Handicap, Vrijheid En Overheersing: Een Republikeins Perspectief Op Het Gehandicaptenbeleid, Jurgen De Wispelaere, David Casassas Dec 2010

Handicap, Vrijheid En Overheersing: Een Republikeins Perspectief Op Het Gehandicaptenbeleid, Jurgen De Wispelaere, David Casassas

Jurgen De Wispelaere

This article outlines a republican perspective on disability policy. Committed to ensuring the freedom-as-nondomination of disabled citizens, such a republican perspective first offers a particular diagnosis of the injustice of disability disadvantage, both in relation to individuals (dominium) and the state (imperium). Next we argue that a republican perspective may be able to sidestep some perverse implications of social contract approaches to social justice, and capable of offering a robust philosophical foundation for a theory of justice for disabled citizens. Finally, we offer a brief outline of republican remedies, grounded in the twin principles of civic participation and democratic contestation, …

The Two Envelopes Problem: A 'Back Of The Envelope' Solution, Raam P. Gokhale Nov 2010

The Two Envelopes Problem: A 'Back Of The Envelope' Solution, Raam P. Gokhale

Raam P Gokhale

We give a simple solution of the two envelopes problem by considering an alternate situation to which the problem’s expectation formula more properly applies. The flaw in reasoning in the original problem is apparent once the difference in the two problems is examined.

Resolution Of Grue Using A Support Measure, Raam P. Gokhale Nov 2010

Resolution Of Grue Using A Support Measure, Raam P. Gokhale

Raam P Gokhale

Goodman’s grue paradox is unassailable if we hold that instances confirm generalizations, for the evidence at hand is both an instance of ‘All emeralds are green’ and ‘All emeralds are grue’. But if we consider what bearing the denials of the two hypotheses have on the evidence, a very different picture emerges. This paper argues that the denial of ‘All emeralds are grue’ is more positively relevant to the evidence to date than the denial of ‘All emeralds are green’ is to the evidence and that therefore ‘All emeralds are green’ is better supported by the evidence than ‘All emeralds …

Morphogrammatics Of Reflection, Rudolf Kaehr Nov 2010

Morphogrammatics Of Reflection, Rudolf Kaehr

Rudolf Kaehr

Turning back from the studies of morphogrammatics to some open questions of reflectional programming, the recountered problematics might be put into a different light and new methods of handling formal aspects of reflection and reflectionality shall be introduced. Albeit the use of light-metaphors, morphogrammatic reflection is not sketched along the paradigm of optical metaphors. Morphograms are presenting neither propositions nor perceptions able for mirroring (representation). Exercises in defining morphogrammatic retro-grade recursion and reflection schemata are continued from the paper “Sketches to Morphogrammatic Programming”.

Many Lohias? Appropriations Of Lohia In Karnataka, Chandan Gowda Oct 2010

Many Lohias? Appropriations Of Lohia In Karnataka, Chandan Gowda

Chandan Gowda

Analysing Rammanohar Lohia’s reception in the spheres of party politics, social movements and literature in Karnataka, it emerges that his impact on electoral politics in the state was not substantial. However, key policy innovations such as Devaraj Urs’ land reforms and pro-backward class policies in the 1970s owed a debt to Lohia. He was also a major influence on social and literary movements in the state. Besides inspiring some of the key leaders of the farmers’ movement, Lohia contributed to the distinctiveness of the dalit movement in Karnataka. His ideas on caste, language and individual freedom also inspired the leading …

A Visão De Homem Em Fromm, Wagner Amodeo Prof. Sep 2010

A Visão De Homem Em Fromm, Wagner Amodeo Prof.

Wagner Amodeo

"Advance Mysore" : The Cultural Logic Of A Developmental State, Chandan Gowda Jul 2010

"Advance Mysore" : The Cultural Logic Of A Developmental State, Chandan Gowda

Chandan Gowda

What governs state interests in development in formerly colonised societies? Conventional social science accounts stress politico-economic variables, particularly the need for capital accumulation. By means of a detailed analysis of the Bhadravati Iron Works, an ambitious industrial project in the state of Mysore in colonial India, it is demonstrated that mechanisms are also important in state-led development. Locational disadvantages, technical problems, and increased production costs made the iron plant an unprofitable venture from its inception. The state, however, kept the plant operational on grounds of its pedagogic value for local society. A claim for civilisational recognition for India’s capacity for …

Memristics: Memristors, Again? – Part Ii, How To Transform Wired ‘Translations’ Between Crossbars Into Interactions?, Rudolf Kaehr Apr 2010

Memristics: Memristors, Again? – Part Ii, How To Transform Wired ‘Translations’ Between Crossbars Into Interactions?, Rudolf Kaehr

Rudolf Kaehr

The idea behind this patchwork of conceptual interventions is to show the possibility of a “buffer-free” modeling of the crossbar architecture for memristive systems on the base of a purely difference-theoretical approach. It is considered that on a nano-electronic level principles of interpretation appears as mechanisms of complementarity. The most basic conceptual approach to such a complementarity is introduced as an interchangeability of operators and operands of an operation. Therefore, the architecture of crossbars gets an interpretation as complementarity between crossbar functionality and “buffering” translation functionality. That is, the same matter functions as operator and at once, as operand – …

Memristics: Memristors, Again?, Rudolf Kaehr

Rudolf Kaehr

This collection gives first and short critical reflections on the concepts of memristics, memristors and memristive systems and the history of similar movements with an own focus on a possible interplay between memory and computing functions, at once, at the same place and time, to achieve a new kind of complementarity between computation and memory on a single chip without retarding buffering conditions.

The polls, these surveys do not withstand any rigorous testing. And contrary to expand the formation of public opinion, impaired. Reconstruction Of Concept Of Paradigm In Thomas S. Kuhn, Fernando Estrada

Fernando Estrada

This article aims to discuss an evaluation of the concept of paradigm of T. Kuhn in his representative work: The Structure of Scientific Revolutions ERC, [Ku96] and the complementary version by W. Stegmüller, Structure and dynamics of theories EDT, [Steg83]. This refined interpretation of the concept of paradigm allows for a more complete set of central Kuhnian concept.

Democracy In Dangerous Places: Colombia. Vote With Paramilitary Preferences, Fernando Estrada Mar 2010

Democracy In Dangerous Places: Colombia. Vote With Paramilitary Preferences, Fernando Estrada

Fernando Estrada

This paper discusses the problem of paramilitary violence in Colombia and its effects on democracy. The elections were part of the purpose of self defense and constituted a disguised form to retain its drug trafficking economy. The impacts on institutional technology have been negative: representative democracy, the electoral system and voting, they were not the same. With paramilitary violence changed the electoral map in areas contested by the traditional political parties. Voting with paramilitary preferences mean the biggest challenge is constitutional democracy in Colombia.

Advance Commitment: An Alternative Approach To The Family Veto Problem In Organ Procurement, Jurgen De Wispelaere, Lindsay Stirton Mar 2010

Advance Commitment: An Alternative Approach To The Family Veto Problem In Organ Procurement, Jurgen De Wispelaere, Lindsay Stirton

Jurgen De Wispelaere

This article tackles the current deficit in the supply of cadaveric organs by addressing the family veto in organ donation. The authors believe that the family veto matters ethically as well as practically and that policies that completely disregard the views of the family in this decision are likely to be counterproductive. Instead, this paper proposes to engage directly with the most important reasons why families often object to the removal of the organs of a loved one who has signed up to the donor registry notably a failure to understand fully and deliberate on the information and a reluctance …

Carnap Model (Cm) Visual Field, Fernando Estrada

Fernando Estrada

The present paper proposes an interpretation theoretical model of the Aufbau of Rudolf Carnap, this interpretation contributes to upgrade the project original carnapiano, in the sense of conferring to the constitutional program of construction logical, less committed analytic equipment with an ontology or clearly defined epistemology. The setting in phenomenal logical reconstruction practice is elaborated for the visual field as a model whose potential user is a fellow ideal percipient, and, a subject epistemic that operates in the same way that a scheduled computer when he has been given basic phenomenal information and some algorithms logical

Facts And Nature Of Scientific Discovery. Ludwick Fleck And Thomas Kuhn, Fernando Estrada Feb 2010

Facts And Nature Of Scientific Discovery. Ludwick Fleck And Thomas Kuhn, Fernando Estrada

Fernando Estrada

Studies of L. Fleck, T. S. Kuhn, N. R. Hanson on the nature of scientific development and thus of a scientific fact, despite their differences, has raised new questions in fields as diverse as the history of science, sociology of science and philosophy of scientific language. At the same time, have pointed unfounded assumptions underlying the current ideas about what are 'facts', and have suggested alternative ways to focus the epistemology of scientific knowledge. Let us identify some detail the implications that flow from our study in this chapter for the proposed research as hypotheses
