Détecter Et Prévenir : De La Digitalisation Des Corps Et De La Docilité Des Normes., Antoinette Rouvroy, Thomas Berns Jul 2009

Détecter Et Prévenir : De La Digitalisation Des Corps Et De La Docilité Des Normes., Antoinette Rouvroy, Thomas Berns

Antoinette Rouvroy

Public Health And The Rights Of States, András Miklós Jul 2009

Public Health And The Rights Of States, András Miklós

Andras Miklos

When exercising their public health powers, states claim various rights against their subjects and aliens. The paper considers whether public health considerations can help justify some of these rights, and explores some constraints on the justificatory force of public health considerations. I outline two arguments about the moral grounds for states’ rights with regard to public health. The principle of fairness emphasizes that those who benefit from public health measures ought to contribute their fair share in upholding them. Alternatively, states’ rights might be justified by a natural duty of justice to uphold and not to obstruct institutions implementing public …

Machhu Longu Kannada Cinema ("Hatchet, Long Sword" Kannada Cinema), Chandan Gowda

Chandan Gowda

Referring to her role in Avva (2008) in a television interview, Shruti, the actress, said: “Her sharp tongue itself is the machhu, longu in the film.” Her analogy affirms the wide popularity of what can be termed the Machhu Longu (ML) films in Kannada, all of which are set in the underworld.

Le Corps Statistique, Antoinette Rouvroy, Thomas Berns Jun 2009

Le Corps Statistique, Antoinette Rouvroy, Thomas Berns

Antoinette Rouvroy

Dolarización Y Generación De Vivienda Formal: Su Lectura En Ecuador, Jaime F. Erazo Espinosa Arq., Oscar R. Ospina Pol.

Jaime F. Erazo Espinosa

Inter/Secciones Urbanas: Origen Y Contexto En América Latina, Jaime F. Erazo Espinosa Arq. Apr 2009

Inter/Secciones Urbanas: Origen Y Contexto En América Latina, Jaime F. Erazo Espinosa Arq.

Jaime F. Erazo Espinosa

In The Reign Of Queen Victoria: Fourteen Texts On Cyprus, 1878-91, Kyriakos N. Demetriou Mar 2009

In The Reign Of Queen Victoria: Fourteen Texts On Cyprus, 1878-91, Kyriakos N. Demetriou

Kyriakos N. Demetriou

This volume includes fourteen long neglected texts on the history, anthropology, politics and society of Cyprus during the first decades of the British rule. The volume is informed by a lengthy introduction by K. Demetriou, who examines the contribution of the British to modernizing the island, by introducing political reforms and improving the island’s economy and infrastructure. It also explores and analyses their perceptions of the indigenous population within the context of imperialist culture and racialist prejudices. Thus apart from being primary sources that belong to the a certain literary genre, this collection has sociological, historical and topographical interest, especially …

Mito, Símbolo Y Metáfora En La Disertación Vi De La Historia Antigua De México, De Francisco Javier Clavijero, Virginia Aspe

Virginia Aspe Dra.

Nationalist Criticisms Of Cosmopolitan Justice, András Miklós Feb 2009

Nationalist Criticisms Of Cosmopolitan Justice, András Miklós

Andras Miklos

This paper critically evaluates some central arguments offered by nationalists against stringent international requirements of justice. The first part considers and rejects Michael Walzer’s argument against international justice relying on a view about the social meanings of goods. The refutation points out, first, that Walzer’s thesis is not true as an empirical matter, and, second, it is not an attractive normative position since it is biased towards certain conceptions of the good. The second part of the paper considers non-relativistic arguments for national partiality. It distinguishes between instrumental and intrinsic arguments and argues that neither form is capable of justifying …

Theological And Pedagogical Implications Of The Role Of Zionism In Reform Jewish Manifestos: A Bridge From Vision To Praxis, Haim O. Rechnitzer, Gabriella Minnes Brandes Jan 2009

Theological And Pedagogical Implications Of The Role Of Zionism In Reform Jewish Manifestos: A Bridge From Vision To Praxis, Haim O. Rechnitzer, Gabriella Minnes Brandes

Haim O Rechnitzer

In this article, we explore the transition from philosophical and theological manifestos to their practical and educational implementation as we analyze the official American Reform-Judaism discourse as curricular text. This analysis provides a tool for a discussion of the relationships between vision and its implementation particularly for educators and leaders. We highlight the possibilities of dialogue among educators, rabbis-in-training, and leaders to aid in the formation of new visionary documents and, in doing so, affect the dynamics of paving new directions. We demonstrate a model that may be used to investigate such translations from vision to a lived experience and …

Georgian Literary Modernism: Poems By Titsian Tabidze, Paolo Iashvili And Galaktion Tabidze, Rebecca Gould Jan 2009

Georgian Literary Modernism: Poems By Titsian Tabidze, Paolo Iashvili And Galaktion Tabidze, Rebecca Gould

Rebecca Gould

This feature section, originally published in the literary journal Metamorphoses, introduces the poets Titsian Tabidze, Galaktion Tabidze, and Paolo Iashvili to an English readership. These three major exponents of the Georgian Literary Modernism were all either executed (Titsian) or committed suicide (Paolo and Galaktion) as a result of Stalin's and Beria's repressive policies. Collectively, these texts movingly testify to the intimate relation between politics and poetics in Georgian literature, as in other literatures of the former Soviet Union. An introduction called "The Twlight of Georgian Literary Modernism" is followed by the original Georgian texts and English translations of the following …

Governo Dos Corpos E Escola Contemporânea: Pedagogia Do Fitness, Andre De Macedo Duarte, Maria Rita De Assis César Jan 2009

Governo Dos Corpos E Escola Contemporânea: Pedagogia Do Fitness, Andre De Macedo Duarte, Maria Rita De Assis César

Andre de Macedo Duarte

The article investigates the school’s contemporary new role under the light of Foucaultian concepts such as biopolitcs and governamentality, and the Deleuzian notion of control society. We analyze modern school as a privileged disciplinary institution and its contemporary crisis is focalized by the notion of control pedagogy, with which we evaluate recent educational reforms that have started shaping the school’s new role in the present. Finally, we approach a very recent phenomenon that we title as ‘fitness pedagogy’, in order to enlighten the school’s new role in the application of public policies which aim at producing a thin and healthy …

Heidegger E A Técnica, Andre De Macedo Duarte Jan 2009

Heidegger E A Técnica, Andre De Macedo Duarte

Andre de Macedo Duarte

the article presents and discusses Heidegger’s main theses in his 1953 essay, “The question of technology”. These theses are related to Heidegger’s late hypothesis concerning Western history as the history of Being’s epochal sendings. This theoretical frame stresses the originality of Heidegger’s late analysis concerning the essence of modern technology and modern science in contrastto his previous analysis on modern science and nature in the context of Being and Time’s project of fundamental ontology, from 1927.
