When Is God And What Is Time?, Zack Tomlinson Apr 2021

When Is God And What Is Time?, Zack Tomlinson

Honors Theses

The philosophy of time has deep impacts on the study of God's foreknowledge and our free will. This discussion dates back to the early church fathers, but unfortunately the Bible is somewhat quiet on the issue of divine foreknowledge and free will. Therefore much work needs to be done in philosophical circles to help us understand these topics. This paper found that there is a way to reconcile God's foreknowledge with our free will by opting for a view of time called "eternalism" and holding to the idea that God is outside of time.

The Search For Mere Purgatory, Tucker Douglass Apr 2020

The Search For Mere Purgatory, Tucker Douglass

Honors Theses

Jerry L. Walls, in his book Purgatory: The Logic of Total Transformation, examines the different models of postmortem purgation that have been advocated over the years. After having assessed the value of satisfaction, sanctification, and mixed models, Walls proposes C. S. Lewis’s model as a type of “mere purgatory” that most Christians could get behind. He gives several reasons why Lewis’s account could prove most ecumenical:

1. Lewis is respected by believers from most all Christian traditions, including evangelicals;

2. his other views on the afterlife are already highly regarded;

3. his model is purely sanctification based while also …

Plato's Machiavelli: Reconsidering Callicles' Speech In Plato's Gorgias, Steven Thomason Mar 2017

Plato's Machiavelli: Reconsidering Callicles' Speech In Plato's Gorgias, Steven Thomason

Presentations and Lectures

Although often dismissed as a villain, Callicles’ views about philosophy, politics, and human nature expressed in his speech in Plato’s Gorgias criticizing Socrates turn-out to be similar to Socrates’ own thoughts about philosophy, politics, and human nature when compared to Socrates’ arguments in other dialogues such as the Republic. However, Socrates obfuscates these similarities through his use of rhetoric in the latter part of the dialogue in order to conceal a more fundamental disagreement about the priority and relationship of philosophy and politics. This similarity and obfuscation constitutes an important and overlooked teaching of Plato’s Gorgias.

Does Gendered Language Have An Effect On You?, Andrew John Stambolie, Angella Valencia, Olivia Allbright Apr 2016

Does Gendered Language Have An Effect On You?, Andrew John Stambolie, Angella Valencia, Olivia Allbright

Scholars Day

Our study tested the effects of gender exclusive and gender inclusive language on males’ and females’ feelings of ostracism, motivation, identification, and their emotions.

Research has shown that being rejected or ignored can have negative psychological effects. (Stout & Dasgupta, 2011).

Ostracism is both the act being ignored and excluded. It includes directly differing with the individual, indicating his or her failings, as well as actively denying being associated with this individual. (Cheung & Choi, 2000).

Discrimination can be understood as a larger sociological component that includes ostracism. (Cheung & Choi, 2000).

Research Question: Does the use of gender-inclusive and …

Physical And Psychological Balancing Act: Is Stability Desirable?, Abby Huggins, Marley Zochert, Nate Shrader Apr 2016

Physical And Psychological Balancing Act: Is Stability Desirable?, Abby Huggins, Marley Zochert, Nate Shrader

Scholars Day

Recent studies have conveyed that the physical instability of a person would alter the way they thought about other people’s relationships and the traits people seek in romantic partners. These studies also show that cordial physical experiences can impact people’s views of relationship stability (Kille, Forest, & Wood, 2013).

Confessing love for a significant other while seated in an unstable condition can alter how they truly feel if they were to be sitting in a stable condition (Forest, Kille, Wood, & Stehouwer, 2015).

Similarly, one study showed that being in a position that makes someone feel uncomfortable can influence what …

The Role Of Gender And Emotions On Moral Hypocrisy, Jordan K. Raglin, Tye G. Boudra-Bland, Tristan B. Benzon Apr 2016

The Role Of Gender And Emotions On Moral Hypocrisy, Jordan K. Raglin, Tye G. Boudra-Bland, Tristan B. Benzon

Scholars Day

Recent studies have shown that the emotions of anger and guilt have interesting effects on an individual’s moral hypocrisy. Anger increasing the likelihood that one will be hypocritical and guilt effectively neutralizes any hypocritical tendencies. (Polman & Ruttan, 2012)

We were keenly interested to see if we could duplicate these results at Ouachita and were also curious as to whether or not gender plays a role in how hypocritical a person will be.

We wanted to know if emotion or gender could negatively impact logical reasoning because if they do, we could keep this in mind while making judgments in …

The Relationship Between Natural Law And Mosaic Law In Philo: His On Rewards And Punishments As A Case Study, Clark Whitney Jan 2014

The Relationship Between Natural Law And Mosaic Law In Philo: His On Rewards And Punishments As A Case Study, Clark Whitney

Honors Theses

Living from around 20 B.C. to A.D. 50, Philo of Alexandria, Egypt contributed to the fields of philosophy and religion. In fact, Philo is one of the most significant contributors to our understanding of Hellenistic Judaism and Middle Platonism.. By extension, our understanding of the New Testament (especially the Pauline epistles) is indebted to Philo, because a plethora of the New Testament writings were composed by Jews into Greek language. According to C.D. Yonge, very little is known about Philo's personal life except that he lived in Alexandria, Egypt and came from a family who was wealthy and prominent among …

Law, Philosophy, And Civil Disobedience: The Laws' Speech In Plato's 'Crito', Steven Thomason Jan 2012

Law, Philosophy, And Civil Disobedience: The Laws' Speech In Plato's 'Crito', Steven Thomason

Articles

Plato's 'Crito' is an examination of the tension between political science, a life devoted to the rational discourse and the critique of politics, and the demands of allegiance and service to the city. The argument Socrates makes in the name of the laws is not just meant to persuade Crito. Rather, it is a philosophic defense of the city itself, the philosophic response to Socrates' own speech in the Apology defending philosophy. This speech reveals the dangers and problems of a life devoted to philosophy when reason is directed to politics and calls into question the values and way of …

Hemingway And The Search For Meaning In Life, David M. Strain May 1981

Hemingway And The Search For Meaning In Life, David M. Strain

Honors Theses

It is difficult to define the precise nature of this study. Strictly speaking, it is not a literary study, for the questions which it asks and the topics which it addresses go beyond the traditional boundaries of literary criticism. Likewise, it is not a philosophical study, for it transcends that discipline as well. Neither is it an eclectic combination of the two. This paper is a part of a deeply personal self-examination which I have undergone over the last three years. As I have tried to determine the ways in which Hemingway characters find meaning in life, I have also …

A Study Of Goethe's Philosophy Of Science, Colleen A. Evans Jan 1980

A Study Of Goethe's Philosophy Of Science, Colleen A. Evans

Honors Theses

While Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was universally proclaimed as one of Europe's greatest men, as well as Germany's greatest poet, the magnitude and diversity of his other achievements should also be examined. Not only was he a poet but also a painter, scientist, statesman, philosopher, critic and theater manager. Goethe was viewed by the world as the last universal man who pursued an unprejudiced search for truth. He endeavored to become a truly united man. Goethe came closest to being a complete man in the modern age of "dissociated and frustrated human fragments." Although the dualistic thought, which separated mind …

Governmental Philosophies Of Plato, Saint Augustine, Machiavelli, And Montesquieu, D. G. Durham Jr. Jan 1974

Governmental Philosophies Of Plato, Saint Augustine, Machiavelli, And Montesquieu, D. G. Durham Jr.

Honors Theses

The purpose of this paper is not to give an in depth discussion of the various books. The purpose, rather, is to give scattered statements which reveal the flavor of the books as much as revealing the contents.

Each of the books included reflect highly the era in which they were written, and must be weighed in the understanding of the books.

A Summary Of Readings: Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855), Roger Schoeniger Jan 1970

A Summary Of Readings: Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855), Roger Schoeniger

Honors Theses

Every individual is a unique product of all those factors which touch his life. Soren Kierkegaard must be understood in the light of those factors within his life. His father, Michael Pedersen, played a major role in his son's life. He was obsessed with guilt because of past sins and sought to make atonement for these sins by disciplining his son in the Christian way of life. Somehow, the father's guilt was tranfered [sic] to Soren, and Soren spent the rest of his life in search for forgiveness.

Theological Existentialism, Ronnie Ford, Randy Maxwell, Allen Hampton, Roger Schoeniger, Monte Hollowell Jan 1970

Theological Existentialism, Ronnie Ford, Randy Maxwell, Allen Hampton, Roger Schoeniger, Monte Hollowell

Honors Theses

The Philosophy and Religion Honors Seminar has studied various theological existentialists this semester, and in order to contrast the views of atheistic existentialists, the views of an atheistic philosopher has been presented. The method of presenting the ideas is to find the actual objective facts of human existence, then to find the bases of hope in the human life, and finally to find the existential category that results from the hope that is generated. Sartre is the atheistic philosopher presented, and he finds all the details of life, then he sees these as meaningless, and finally life is presented as …

The Morality Of Heart Transplants: A Debate, Ken Brown, Mark Coppenger, Ronnie Ford, Allen Hampton, William Morgan, Roger Schoeniger Jan 1969

The Morality Of Heart Transplants: A Debate, Ken Brown, Mark Coppenger, Ronnie Ford, Allen Hampton, William Morgan, Roger Schoeniger

Honors Theses

Over a year has passed since the first heart transplant was accomplished, and in that short year, many questions concerning ethics, law, and theology have come forth to be debated. So many questions exist that a very exhaustive study would be needed; however, three main considerations will give a basic understanding of the implications of heart transplants. The Religion and Philosophy Honors Seminar has been exploring heart transplants this past semester. This paper is a summary of the three main issues concerning heart transplants with emphasis upon the theological and philosophical implications involved.

The Philosophy Of Gabriel Marcel, Mark Coppenger Jan 1969

The Philosophy Of Gabriel Marcel, Mark Coppenger

Honors Theses

The first contact I had with the writings of Gabriel Marcel was in his book, Being and Having. The book had the effect of cooling me toward Marcel because so often I really had to struggle to get what he was saying. Next, Homo Viator came a little more easily but was still difficult, especially the parts about hope and Rilke. Finally, I read the two-volume work, The Mystery of Being. The first volume was a lot clearer than the first two books, but in the second volume, I really started to get the feel for his writings. …
