The philosophy of time has deep impacts on the study of God's foreknowledge and our free will. This discussion dates back to the early church fathers, but unfortunately the Bible is somewhat quiet on the issue of divine foreknowledge and free will. Therefore much work needs to be done in philosophical circles to help us understand these topics. This paper found that there is a way to reconcile God's foreknowledge with our free will by opting for a view of time called "eternalism" and holding to the idea that God is outside of time.

The Search For Mere Purgatory, Tucker Douglass

Jerry L. Walls, in his book Purgatory: The Logic of Total Transformation, examines the different models of postmortem purgation that have been advocated over the years. After having assessed the value of satisfaction, sanctification, and mixed models, Walls proposes C. S. Lewis’s model as a type of “mere purgatory” that most Christians could get behind. He gives several reasons why Lewis’s account could prove most ecumenical:

1. Lewis is respected by believers from most all Christian traditions, including evangelicals;

2. his other views on the afterlife are already highly regarded;

Plato's Machiavelli: Reconsidering Callicles' Speech In Plato's Gorgias, Steven Thomason

Presentations and Lectures

Although often dismissed as a villain, Callicles’ views about philosophy, politics, and human nature expressed in his speech in Plato’s Gorgias criticizing Socrates turn-out to be similar to Socrates’ own thoughts about philosophy, politics, and human nature when compared to Socrates’ arguments in other dialogues such as the Republic. However, Socrates obfuscates these similarities through his use of rhetoric in the latter part of the dialogue in order to conceal a more fundamental disagreement about the priority and relationship of philosophy and politics. This similarity and obfuscation constitutes an important and overlooked teaching of Plato’s Gorgias.

Our study tested the effects of gender exclusive and gender inclusive language on males’ and females’ feelings of ostracism, motivation, identification, and their emotions.

Research has shown that being rejected or ignored can have negative psychological effects. (Stout & Dasgupta, 2011).

Ostracism is both the act being ignored and excluded. It includes directly differing with the individual, indicating his or her failings, as well as actively denying being associated with this individual. (Cheung & Choi, 2000).

Discrimination can be understood as a larger sociological component that includes ostracism. (Cheung & Choi, 2000).

Recent studies have conveyed that the physical instability of a person would alter the way they thought about other people’s relationships and the traits people seek in romantic partners. These studies also show that cordial physical experiences can impact people’s views of relationship stability (Kille, Forest, & Wood, 2013).

Confessing love for a significant other while seated in an unstable condition can alter how they truly feel if they were to be sitting in a stable condition (Forest, Kille, Wood, & Stehouwer, 2015).

Recent studies have shown that the emotions of anger and guilt have interesting effects on an individual’s moral hypocrisy. Anger increasing the likelihood that one will be hypocritical and guilt effectively neutralizes any hypocritical tendencies. (Polman & Ruttan, 2012)

Plato's 'Crito' is an examination of the tension between political science, a life devoted to the rational discourse and the critique of politics, and the demands of allegiance and service to the city. The argument Socrates makes in the name of the laws is not just meant to persuade Crito. Every individual is a unique product of all those factors which touch his life. Soren Kierkegaard must be understood in the light of those factors within his life. His father, Michael Pedersen, played a major role in his son's life. He was obsessed with guilt because of past sins and sought to make atonement for these sins by disciplining his son in the Christian way of life. Somehow, the father's guilt was tranfered [sic] to Soren, and Soren spent the rest of his life in search for forgiveness.

The Philosophy and Religion Honors Seminar has studied various theological existentialists this semester, and in order to contrast the views of atheistic existentialists, the views of an atheistic philosopher has been presented. The method of presenting the ideas is to find the actual objective facts of human existence, then to find the bases of hope in the human life, and finally to find the existential category that results from the hope that is generated. Over a year has passed since the first heart transplant was accomplished, and in that short year, many questions concerning ethics, law, and theology have come forth to be debated. So many questions exist that a very exhaustive study would be needed; however, three main considerations will give a basic understanding of the implications of heart transplants. The Religion and Philosophy Honors Seminar has been exploring heart transplants this past semester. This paper is a summary of the three main issues concerning heart transplants with emphasis upon the theological and philosophical implications involved.

The first contact I had with the writings of Gabriel Marcel was in his book, Being and Having. The book had the effect of cooling me toward Marcel because so often I really had to struggle to get what he was saying. Next, Homo Viator came a little more easily but was still difficult, especially the parts about hope and Rilke. Finally, I read the two-volume work, The Mystery of Being.
