What We Talk About When We Talk About The Soul, Stephen Asma May 2010

What We Talk About When We Talk About The Soul, Stephen Asma

Stephen T Asma

The author discusses the popularity among college students of the concept of the soul, and attempts to place it in its proper context. He dispenses with orthodox theological arguments and New Age arguments as scientifically untenable. He takes a so-called Wittgensteinian approach, noting soul's linguistic significance. He analyzes expressions which use the concept of soul and concludes that they are qualitatively different from testable factual expressions. He notes that soul talk is about hopes and aspirations, inspiration, or feelings deeper than friendship. He assigns it meaning outside of scientific concepts. He likens expressions of soul to creative and ethical acts, …

Why I Am A Buddhist, Stephen Asma Feb 2010

Why I Am A Buddhist, Stephen Asma

Stephen T Asma

Profound and amusing, this book provides a viable approach to answering the perennial questions: Who am I? Why am I here? How can I live a meaningful life? For Asma, the answers are to be found in Buddhism.

There have been a lot of books that have made the case for Buddhism. What makes this book fresh and exciting is Asma's iconoclasm, irreverence, and hardheaded approach to the subject. He is distressed that much of what passes for Buddhism is really little more than "New Age mush." He loudly asserts that it is time to "take the California out of …

Green Guilt, Stephen Asma Jan 2010

Green Guilt, Stephen Asma

Stephen T Asma

The essay discusses the more neurotic aspects of environmentalism, involving guilt over failure to recycle or turn off the lights. It notes that those most prone to these sensibilities are those who have left traditional religion. It quotes philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche who states that religious emotions such as guilt and indignation are still present in a post-Christian world. The essay argues that we should certainly save the planet but avoid the neurosis that often accompanies it.

Privacy, Privacies And Basic Needs, Hayden Ramsay Dec 2009

Privacy, Privacies And Basic Needs, Hayden Ramsay

Hayden Ramsay

Privacy has achieved an almost unique position and significance in contemporary social
life and debate. It is popularly claimed as a human right of citizens, a universal obligation
of governments, agencies and corporations, a basic need for all social intercourse, and
most recently, a prized virtue in various mission statements and ethics codes.1
Privacy is perhaps the most high profile public ethics issue today, almost an obsession in
individualistic cultures and liberal politics, tagged on as preface or afterword to practically
every official and quasi-official document, piously acknowledged at the beginning of all
automated call-centre messages. Privacy has quickly become …

A Man Loses His Faith, Hayden Ramsay Dec 2009

A Man Loses His Faith, Hayden Ramsay

Hayden Ramsay

‘Losing one’s faith’ usually refers to ceasing to believe in God and
in doctrines. But what changes—and losses—are experienced in the
moral life when there is loss of faith? With reference to Aquinas,
changes in moral understanding related to the loss of faith are discussed.
Next, changes in the life of virtue and so in moral knowledge
are examined, and finally changes in the inner moral life—
particularly, the loss of moral certainty. The paper suggests that when
they experience loss of faith Christian societies can suffer the same
sorts of moral losses as Christian individuals. Such loss has inevitable …

Mechanisms, Stuart Glennan Dec 2009

Mechanisms, Stuart Glennan

Stuart Glennan

Mechanism is undoubtedly a causal concept, in the sense that ordinary definitions and philosophical analyses explicate the concept in terms of other causal concepts such as production and interaction. Given this fact, many philosophers have supposed that analyses of the concept of mechanism, while they might appeal to philosophical theories about the nature of causation, could do little to inform such theories. On the other hand, methods of causal inference and explanation appeal to mechanisms. Discovering a mechanism is the gold standard for establishing and explaining causal connections. This fact suggests that it might be possible to provide an analysis …
