Living In The Past: Preservation, Interpretation, And Engagement, And The 19th – Early 20th Century Home, Kirsten Jarrett
Living In The Past: Preservation, Interpretation, And Engagement, And The 19th – Early 20th Century Home, Kirsten Jarrett
Kirsten Jarrett
In recent years, boundaries between curated domestic space (typically open to the public, maintained by museum professionals, and supported by government or charitable funding), and privately occupied dwellings, have on occasion been eroded. Each year, usually as part of annual heritage events run by non-profit organisations, a small number of residents permit members of the public to view features of historic interest within their homes. Furthermore, extensive opportunities to share information, images, and data on-line allow residents to ‘virtually’ display historical features within otherwise closed domestic spaces. Adopting approaches from ‘Rescue’, Research, and Public Archaeology, the Living in the Past …
Patrick Scott’S Work For Signa Design Consultants, Mary Ann Bolger
Patrick Scott’S Work For Signa Design Consultants, Mary Ann Bolger
Mary Ann Bolger
This essay examines Patrick Scott’s work as a designer in mid-twentieth century Ireland. It focuses in particular on the work of one of Ireland’s first modern design consultancies, Signa, where Scott was the general design consultant. The paper argues that Signa’s designs provided an early model for a design vocabulary that could be, in the words of the British design critic Herbert Read, both “Irish and contemporary”.
Ibn Khaldun, Syed Farid Alatas
Ibn Khaldun, Syed Farid Alatas
farid alatas

He founded an entirely new science that he called the science of human society (ciim ai-ijtimac ai-insan~ or human social organization (ciim al- cumran ai-bashan). It had little impact on the development of Muslim thought for several centuries but greatly impressed European thinkers from the nineteenth century on, some of whom regarded Ibn I

Teaching Classical Sociological Theory In Singapore: The Context Of Eurocentrism, Syed Farid Alatas
Teaching Classical Sociological Theory In Singapore: The Context Of Eurocentrism, Syed Farid Alatas
farid alatas
We argue that there is a need to rethink the teaching of classical sociological theories given our concern with the limitations of the received theoretical canon, and through our encounters with students of sociology who also persistently ask that the classics be shown to be meaningful and of contemporary relevance. In our teaching, we highlight Eurocentrism as an additional and essential context for understanding the rise of classical sociological theory, and to attune students in more meaningful ways to the works of Marx, Weber, and Durkheim. Ironically, such an approach constitutes a new form of legitimating the classics by revealing …

By Ernst Collin, translated and introduced by Peter D. Verheyen
Der Pressbengel, by Ernst Collin, was originally published in German in 1922. This is its first translation into English. Conceived as a dialogue between a bibliophile and a master bookbinder on all aspects of the bookbinding craft as well as specific techniques, the text also addresses the conflicts between quality and cost and matters of good taste. The Enigma Of Mayan Hieroglyphs, Russell M. Franks
Russell M. Franks
Much of the confusion in deciphering Mayan hieroglyphs that has occurred over the centuries can be traced directly to Bishop de Landa. Landa is infamous for his religious persecution of the Maya peoples, and beginning in 1562, the systematic destruction of their birch-bark books. It wasn't until 1922 that the Russian linguist Yuri Knorozov made the breakthrough analysis that the glyphs stood for sounds and not symbols.
