Corporate Historical Responsibility (Chr): Addressing A Past Of Forced Labor At Volkswagen, Claudia Janssen Danyi
Corporate Historical Responsibility (Chr): Addressing A Past Of Forced Labor At Volkswagen, Claudia Janssen Danyi
Claudia I. Janssen Danyi, PhD
This article introduces corporate historical responsibility (CHR), a concept that can guide organizations when addressing dark corporate histories. CHR holds that organizations have responsibilities toward victims of past corporate practices and toward present reconciliatory discourse. Volkswagen’s discourse about its history of forced labor during WW II serves as an example of CHR. The rhetorical analysis illustrates that CHR hinges on the recognition of the past as a moral issue and on the organization’s ability to create historical accountability, take responsibility, make public acknowledgements, and remember its past. It further illustrates that CHR creates sustainable policies that can strengthen corporate citizenship …

The projected costs of trends expected to occur in Australian society over the next 40 years, particularly demographic changes, have the potential to threaten the fiscal sustainability of Australian Government finances. These costs particularly relate to the financing of health care, and the Government has called for new models of care to address this problem. This paper presents and discusses some historical models or paradigms of health care that may assist in understanding the current need for change and a possible solution.

Contemporary Muslim Revival: The Case Of "Protestant Islam", Syed Farid Alatas
Contemporary Muslim Revival: The Case Of "Protestant Islam", Syed Farid Alatas
farid alatas
Islam is seen as problematic today because of the actions of a few people armed with an aberrant ideology and the moral support or sympathy of a constituency of angry and disaffected Muslims in various parts of the world, often provoked by what they see as hypocritical policies and actions on the part of the world's powers. The problematic nature of Islam, however, was partly made possible by the centuries of conflict between Islam and the West. For the first few hundred years of its existence, Christianity was the only universal religion, both in theory and in practice. With the …

Who Survived The Titanic? A Logistic Regression Analysis, Lonnie K. Stevans, David Gleicher
Lonnie K. Stevans
A logistic regression analysis of an extensive data set on the Titanic passengers is presented which tests the likelihood that a Titanic passenger survived the accident--based upon passenger characteristics. The main finding is that underneath the strong overt preference afforded in the rescue by the authorities to women and children over men, there was a complex class determination of survival rates among men, on the one hand, and women and children, on the other. We hypothesize that the statistical interactions of gender and class are explained by two crucial decisions made by the ship’s authorities: 1. to encourage, and perhaps …
