Location Based Services - A Bridge Too Far For Data Linkage And Behaviour Under Security And Privacy Concerns?, Marcus R. Wigan Dec 2009

Location Based Services - A Bridge Too Far For Data Linkage And Behaviour Under Security And Privacy Concerns?, Marcus R. Wigan

Marcus R Wigan

Location-based services (LBS) are dependent on a knowledge of a real time location, knowledge of the environment, and integrated with communications. An ideal specification for travel data collection. LBS has become pervasive very swiftly, but the implications are not yet widely recognised. The addition of realtime information, response and service providers to the now familiar combination of GPS, and data recording is the focus of the present paper. The business development path to LBS is outlined, and the implications for data gathering, matching and response considered. The privacy and surveillance aspects are of varying sensitivity in different cultures, even within …

Paintings And Explorations, Scott Ender Dec 2009

Paintings And Explorations, Scott Ender

Art and Design

My senior project consisted of a large series of paintings on canvas. I created seven large scale paintings (36” x 48” size) which involved minimalism, typography, a “painterly” process, and abstraction. It was a series of explorations in working with my own two (physical) hands, rather than working on a computer as is the standard method of working for graphic designers. These paintings were done in hopes that the series would help me further define my artistic style, accumulate a larger body of work, and possibly discover a new form of painting.

Mycalpoly Redesign Concept, Andrew Santos-Johnson Dec 2009

Mycalpoly Redesign Concept, Andrew Santos-Johnson

Art and Design

For my senior project I developed a conceptual redesign for the Mycalpoly Portal interface. I approached the whole process with the objective of designing a better user experience. The Portal redesign concept began with research on interaction design and user interviews and culminated with screenshots of the final design. The final concept included redesigns for the Mycalpoly login screen, the homepage, custom homepage, an example of extended tab view, and a sample search results page.

The following report includes background information on interaction design, as well as the process I went through to create my redesign for the Mycalpoly Portal.

Potensialitas Dan Keterbatasan Inovasi Morfologis Dalam Bahasa Indonesia; Contoh Kombinasi Afiks "Keter-/-An", Jérôme Samuel

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This paper examines with a particular affixe (keter-/-an) consisting in two primary affixes. Through the analyse of terms coined by the Pusat Bahasa and spontaneous terms, the paper distinguishes between "double" and "complex" affixation, corresponding to different operating modes of affixation. The first deals with an already affixed and lexicalized word, then reaffixed and relexicalized. The second, almost only found in documents produced by the Pusat Bahasa, refers to a base getting a first affix in a poorly (or not) lexicalized form, constituting no more than a morphological stage towards the wished form, which is intent as lexicalized. Complex affix …

Developing An Orthography For Onya Darat (Western Borneo); Practical And Theoretical Considerations, Uri Tadmor Oct 2009

Developing An Orthography For Onya Darat (Western Borneo); Practical And Theoretical Considerations, Uri Tadmor

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Onya Darat is a language spoken, with great dialectal variation, in the interior of western Borneo. It is the southernmost member of Land Dayak, a branch of the Austronesian language family. This article reports on the development of a writing system for Onya Darat. In addition to five vowels and 19 simple consonants, Onya Darat also exhibits three series of complex oral-nasal segments: prenasalized oral stops, preoralized nasals, and postoralized nasals. An analysis of the Onya Darat sound system reveals that of these three series only postoralized nasals are distinctive and therefore need to be represented in the writing system. …

Vygotsky's Socio-Cultural Theory Of Literacy; Scaffolding Children To Read And Write At An Early Age, Mahzan Arshad, Wu Hsueh Chen Oct 2009

Vygotsky's Socio-Cultural Theory Of Literacy; Scaffolding Children To Read And Write At An Early Age, Mahzan Arshad, Wu Hsueh Chen

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

In the article the concept of semiotic mediation, appropriation, internalization, Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) and scaffolding in particular were reviewed to provide understanding of the process. Under the concept of semiotic mediation, the issue of how children learn through imitating adults was examined with inputs from second language acquisition theories. Vygotsky's concept of appropriation provides the springboard for a discussion on how children may appropriate the psychological tool of language through modeling and text meditation in the context of second language learning. It is hoped that the understanding of these concepts could lead to more insights in order to …

New Engagements With Documentary Editions: Audiences, Formats, Contexts, Andrew Jewell Oct 2009

New Engagements With Documentary Editions: Audiences, Formats, Contexts, Andrew Jewell

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Conference Presentations and Speeches

This paper is an effort to think about something different than the creation of documentary editions. It is an effort to think about the reading of them. Specifically, I want to think about the ways the reading of documentary editions is changing, or how it might change. First, however, a caveat: much of what I say is speculative and anecdotal. Though others’ research has been consulted, I’m heavily influenced by what I observe is happening with readers of my own editing project, The Willa Cather Archive, a digital thematic research collection dedicated to the life, work, and environs of the …

Benefits Of Continuing Professional Development In The Visual Communications Sector In Ireland, Con Kennedy

Other resources

This research is concerned with identifying the benefits of Continuous Professional Development for the Visual Communications sector in Ireland, with the aim of establishing what benefits exist for both the employee and employer. Research is undertaken to identify CPD programmes that currently exist in other industries in Ireland for the purpose of establishing commonalities and how this may apply to the Visual Communications sector. This is achieved through a combination of literature review, desk research, surveys of employees and employers in the Visual Communications sector and a number of semi-formal interviews with representatives from various industry sectors with established CPD …

What Is The Optimal Structure For Organisations Representing Design And Designers On The Island Of Ireland?, Barry Sheehan Sep 2009

What Is The Optimal Structure For Organisations Representing Design And Designers On The Island Of Ireland?, Barry Sheehan

Dissertations

The research question addresses the issue of the structure of organisations that represent the interests of design and designers on the island of Ireland. The role of designers in Ireland is seen by society as marginal, rather than one central to the economic, social, and cultural well being of the island and those who live on it. This problem is exacerbated, as the organisational structures of those who play a key part are both confused and confusing. The answer to the question of what is an optimal structure lies in the literature that has been written on the subject and …

Review: Digital Culture, Play And Identity: A World Of Warcraft Reader, Jordan Lieser Sep 2009

Review: Digital Culture, Play And Identity: A World Of Warcraft Reader, Jordan Lieser

Collected Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Both the digital and real societies produced by Blizzard's Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG), World of Warcraft, have received a lot of attention in the relatively new field of game studies. Due to its phenomenal size and cultural significance, the interest World of Warcraft draws is justifiable. The book, Digital Culture, Play, and Identity: A World of Warcraft Reader attempts to dissect the gaming industry's largest MMORPG through a compilation of work consisting of thirteen separate analyses, representing a wide variety of scholars trained with different analytical toolsets. This format was deliberately chosen by the editors, Hilde G. …

Food Anxieties: Issues For The Food Sector, Denise Kelly Jun 2009

Food Anxieties: Issues For The Food Sector, Denise Kelly

Doctoral

People have become obsessed with the harmful effects of eating (Rozin, 1999) and are experiencing ‘food anxiety’, a by-product of modern food. The aim of this research was to explore the nature of food anxiety in Ireland and the potential implications for the food sector. The research objectives were to determine the range of issues causing food anxiety in Irish consumers; to investigate the impact of food anxiety on food choice behaviour; to examine the potential of food anxiety as a segmentation variable for categorizing consumers; and to identify antecedents to the experience of food anxiety. A sequential, mixed methodology …

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

After the Snow: The Oakland County Child Murders and the Search for the Killer is a work of nonfiction that recounts the murders of four children who lived in the suburbs of Oakland County, Michigan and the subsequent search for their murderer, the Oakland County Child Killer. The first of the four murders occurred in February 1976 and the last in March 1977. This thesis chronicles the unsolved case and the police investigation that began in 1976 and seems close to a successful conclusion in the spring of 2009. Over the course of the last two-and-a-half years, I have conducted …

Implementing Research Through A Holistic Design Process, Megan Pearce May 2009

Implementing Research Through A Holistic Design Process, Megan Pearce

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Most interior design students come from a creative background, with limited experience in writing and research. When faced with a challenge in the design process, valuable resources are not utilized. Students do not think to access them. This mind-set carries over as professionals. The research exists, but a lack ofunderstanding prevents designers from using it. Designers must learn to use hard sources and develop their own research to legitimize the profession.

In the design profession, benefits ofresearch are especially seen when using a holistic design process. As integrated approach, the holistic design process involves all parties related to a project. …

'Race' And Inequality In Postcolonial Urban Settings; Examples From Peru, Jamaica, And Indonesia, Peter J.M. Nas, Rivke Jaffe, Line Algoed Apr 2009

'Race' And Inequality In Postcolonial Urban Settings; Examples From Peru, Jamaica, And Indonesia, Peter J.M. Nas, Rivke Jaffe, Line Algoed

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

In this essay we present three case studies of Peru, Jamaica and Indonesia to illustrate the use of the concept of race in daily life in relation to labour, popular culture and beauty respectively. These cases demonstrate how the use of the concept of race changes in the transition from a colonial into a postcolonial setting, depending on the role of the state and nation building. In Peru, we see a clear continuation of racialized thinking; thinking and speaking in terms of 'race' is still the norm. In Jamaica we find a process of inversion: the concept of race is …

Film "Mendadak Dangdut" (2006); Pemahaman Geografi Budaya Dan Identitas, Bayu Kristianto Apr 2009

Film "Mendadak Dangdut" (2006); Pemahaman Geografi Budaya Dan Identitas, Bayu Kristianto

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Place has certain connotations that are involved in shaping the identity of an individual or a community. Due to the importance of place or location in identity formation, Cultural Studies has its own area of analysis focusing on the understanding of place, which is cultural geography. Peter Jackson (1989: 23, quoted by Giles and Middleton 1999: 104) defines cultural geography as a study on how cultures are constituted by social practises occurring in certain contexts which are influenced by historical and geographical factors. The discussion of artistic works centred on the role of place in identity formation becomes an interesting …

An Identity Of Opposition Against Urban Cosmopolitan Setting In Yasmina Khadra's "The Attack" (2006), Retno Sukardan Mamoto Apr 2009

An Identity Of Opposition Against Urban Cosmopolitan Setting In Yasmina Khadra's "The Attack" (2006), Retno Sukardan Mamoto

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Yasmina Khadra, a female name, pseudonym of Muhammed Moulessehoul, an Algerian military officer for 25 years is now a French citizen. John Cullen translates The attack (2006) from French. Rosenau's post-modernist perspective places the Israel-Palestine conflict in a context of social gap. Israel, a First World, whereas Palestine Third World, are both in the Middle East region. Amin Jaafari and his wife, Sihem, a couple of Arab naturalized citizens of Israel, live in urban cosmopolitan city of Tel Aviv. Opposing Amin's success as a surgeon, Sihem is more attracted to fight for the Palestinian liberation for a homeland. Sihem camouflaged …

Between Eroticism And Social Criticism; The Literariness Of Shahnon Ahmad's "Terdedah" (1965), Mohd Zariat Abdul Rani

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

In the history of modern Malay literature, the 1960s are labelled by many literary critics as era picisan (the age of dime fiction) because of the flood of karya picisan (dime fiction) in the local market. Karya picisan here refers to works that clearly manipulate sexual themes, with the intent of conjuring an atmosphere of eroticism to attract readers. Critics generally do not consider these works to be karya sastra (literary works) because they do not fulfil two important criteria that commonly classify the term 'literature', namely bahasa yang indah (aesthetic language) and isi yang berfaedah (beneficial content). In the …

Keterpenjaraan Perempuan Dalam Ruang Kota Di Dalam "Lost In Translation" (2003) Dan "The Good Girl" (2002), Asri Saraswati Apr 2009

Keterpenjaraan Perempuan Dalam Ruang Kota Di Dalam "Lost In Translation" (2003) Dan "The Good Girl" (2002), Asri Saraswati

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The urban space offers more challenges to the female self. Two motion pictures, Lost in translation (2003) and The good girl (2002), depict the issue of gender and space by conveying the city as prison for the female characters. This article analyses the urban space and argues that in the two movies, the female characters struggle and eventually create meaning in the urban room. Applying feminism and urban geography in analysing the position of female characters within the city, the paper finds that the two films offer their perception on, and solutions to, the imprisonment of women by the urban …

Osing Kids And The Banners Of Blambangan; Ethnolinguistic Identity And The Regional Past As Ambient Themes In An East Javanese Town, Bernard Arps

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

On the basis of the theoretical notions of discursive ambience and ambient discourse, this article examines the recent history of language and ethnicity in Banyuwangi in the far east of Java. Over the last three decades (with roots going back to the 1920s and earlier) a redefinition of the language and culture of the "autochthonous" inhabitants of Banyuwangi has been occurring. Their status and constitution have been changing from a variety of Javanese into an autonomous language and ethnicity, called, after the name given to the language or dialect, Osing. At the same time, an idyllic and heroic picture of …

Warisan Dunia Situs Sangiran; Persepsi Menurut Penduduk Sangiran, Bambang Sulistyanto Apr 2009

Warisan Dunia Situs Sangiran; Persepsi Menurut Penduduk Sangiran, Bambang Sulistyanto

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Cultural heritages are things from the past, which are valued by communities in recent time as part of their nation's culture. In reality, among the community members there are problems that arise as a result of diverse perceptions, due to the fact that each perception is based on own interests as is the case with the Site of Sangiran. On the one hand, the Government, as part of the present community, has an idealistic orientation towards the Site of Sangiran as a cultural heritage which unquestionably needs to be protected for the purpose of scientific knowledge and national identity. The …

Urban Dynamics; An Impression Of Surabaya's Sociolinguistic Setting, Tom G. Hoogervorst Apr 2009

Urban Dynamics; An Impression Of Surabaya's Sociolinguistic Setting, Tom G. Hoogervorst

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This paper examines the sociolinguistic situation in the city of Surabaya, by presenting an impression of various phenomena unique to Indonesia's second largest city. A surprisingly little amount of linguistic research has heretofore been carried out on this subject, whereas it transpires from this study that enough intriguing and unique things can be found in this Southeast Asian metropolis, both among its Javanese majority as well as its Madurese and Chinese inhabitants. Due to the lack of earlier relevant publications, this research is largely based on the results of several fieldwork trips, which included the pleasant activities of watching television, …

Mind Vs. Media: A Civil War Between Typography And The Mediated Image, Elizabeth J. Neffinger Apr 2009

Mind Vs. Media: A Civil War Between Typography And The Mediated Image, Elizabeth J. Neffinger

Senior Honors Theses

The past thirty years have marked the start of a new kind of civil war in our digitally powered American society. There is a deep chasm between the cry for the lost art of typography and the mediated power of the Image. We are a culture battling a war in our own heads, attempting to assimilate Images without replacing the need for a written text.

This thesis will argue that the mediated Image is not a death sentence to critical thinking; rather it is an undeniable, inescapable power that can be used to positively influence our culture. It will research …

Custom, Comedy, And The Value Of Dissent, Jennifer E. Rothman Apr 2009

Custom, Comedy, And The Value Of Dissent, Jennifer E. Rothman

All Faculty Scholarship

In this essay, I comment on Dotan Oliar and Christopher Sprigman's article, There's No Free Laugh (Anymore): The Emergence of Intellectual Property Norms and the Transformation of Stand-Up Comedy, 94 Va. L. Rev. 1787 (2008). Their study of the quasi-intellectual property norms in the stand-up comedy world provides yet another compelling example of the phenomenon that I have explored in which the governing intellectual property regime takes a backseat to social norms and other industry customs that dominate the lived experiences of many in creative fields. The microcosm of stand-up comedy reinforces my concern that customs are being used to …

Staging Through Rituals: Directorial Exploration Of The Imaginary Invalid, Dora A. Arreola Jan 2009

Staging Through Rituals: Directorial Exploration Of The Imaginary Invalid, Dora A. Arreola

Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014

This thesis describes how the experimental process of exploring ritual as a foundation for creating contemporary theater can be applied to staging a classical European play, in this case, Molière’s The Imaginary Invalid, adapted by Constance Congdon. Based on research into the influences of Commedia Dell’ Arte in Molière’s plays, the directorial concept of “Mask and Duplicity” influenced all the artistic areas of the production and design (costume, sound, lighting and set). The process described includes the development of a physical vocabulary with the actors, exploring animal movements based on “The Dance of the Deer” (a hunting ritual from the …

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

The publication of the first volume of the Eleanor Roosevelt Papers Project (ERPP), edited by Allida Black and her associates at George Washington University, is an event of the utmost significance to documentary editors and historians alike. Nothing like this pathbreaking volume exists in the ER literature, and this resource will forever change the research landscape. This volume stands for documentary editing at its best, and the larger ERPP itself, with its informative website and teacher training workshops, is a model of the highest editorial scholarship applied innovatively to the mission of public education.
