International Relations From Below: Teaching Absences In International Relations, Tamara Soukotta
Feminist Pedagogy
For four years (2017-2022) I was part of a teaching team to teach the subject of International Relations (IR) to second-year Bachelor International Studies students. The course was structured to have twelve lectures; these lectures were to be delivered by the course leaders to an audience of 500-800 students. In addition to the lectures, students had four tutorial classes, where the rest of the teaching team worked with smaller groups of students (12-15 students in each group). These classes were designed to help the students link theories and practices. As a woman of colour teaching IR in a Dutch university, …

Looking At Shadows: Four French Texts In English Translation, Kalena M. Hermes
Looking At Shadows: Four French Texts In English Translation, Kalena M. Hermes
World Languages and Cultures
This project present four French texts in English translation that share the theme of loss. This theme is perhaps one of the most poignant and relevant; loss is an experience that every human will encounter, and as people we continue across time to grapple with what it means for us and how to deal with it. These four texts will bring the perspectives of four authors to light in English. When we study how other countries and cultures deal with common human issues, we are able to gain new views on these issues. This project will make these texts accessible …
Eighteenth Century Women And The Business Of Making Glass Music, Kate M. Hepworth
Eighteenth Century Women And The Business Of Making Glass Music, Kate M. Hepworth
History
During the relatively short period from the mid-to-late eighteenth century when glass musical instruments were manufactured and gained popularity, several women made names for themselves in the realm of avant-garde musical performance. The lives of three female glass instrument players: Anne Ford, Marianne Davies, and Marianne Kirchgassner, show how these successful performer-entrepreneurs operated in an age of emerging feminine public identity. Their journeys reveal much about the gender dimensions of the age, the role of music in the modern era, the consumption of it, and their approach to business. The financial opportunities presented to women looking to challenge the limitations …

Printing Trends In Board & Card Games, Jessica Lee Riddell
Printing Trends In Board & Card Games, Jessica Lee Riddell
Graphic Communication
The board and card game industry are facing growing pressures from digital games, as video and social media games become more prevalent. Emerging print and media technologies, namely printed electronics and augmented reality, could provide a board and card gaming experience that would draw in gamers who typically play digital games. The expected outcomes of the literature research, industry and market surveys, and subsequent paper are an understanding of the history of games, the current state of the game manufacturing and publishing industry, and attitudes of gamers who would be playing games embedded with the emerging technologies.

Glorious Constructions: The Struggle To Preserve Salvation-Themed Visionary Art Environments, Molly Elaine Sheehan
Glorious Constructions: The Struggle To Preserve Salvation-Themed Visionary Art Environments, Molly Elaine Sheehan
Master's Theses
Salvation-themed art environments are a roadside rarity, built out of a strong visionary dedication to God, but the sites are disappearing simply because the work is misunderstood. The historiography on the subject is sparse, trending more toward coffee table books with big glossy pictures than real scholarly endeavors, but the consensus among all has been clear. The sites are a valuable part of the recent American cultural landscape, crossing several scholarly fields - art, architecture, and history - and uniting them into a cohesive preservation movement. On a series of trips to visit, see, and experience five of these sites, …

Print And Video Games, Rochelle Reyes
Print And Video Games, Rochelle Reyes
Graphic Communication
The purpose of this study is to learn about and show the impact of downloadable games on the printing industry. With new technology comes time-saving convenience; however, the increase in “going digital” decreases a need for what would otherwise have been a point of sale purchase.
This study investigated the current trend of video game use and purchases and how much of a factor print, such as the game’s packaging, played in aiding with the game’s purchase. The study was conducted by creating a survey on SurveyMonkey.com and disseminating it via the Graphic Communication department at California Polytechnic State University, …

Paintings And Explorations, Scott Ender
Paintings And Explorations, Scott Ender
Art and Design
My senior project consisted of a large series of paintings on canvas. I created seven large scale paintings (36” x 48” size) which involved minimalism, typography, a “painterly” process, and abstraction. It was a series of explorations in working with my own two (physical) hands, rather than working on a computer as is the standard method of working for graphic designers. These paintings were done in hopes that the series would help me further define my artistic style, accumulate a larger body of work, and possibly discover a new form of painting.

Mycalpoly Redesign Concept, Andrew Santos-Johnson
Art and Design
For my senior project I developed a conceptual redesign for the Mycalpoly Portal interface. I approached the whole process with the objective of designing a better user experience. The Portal redesign concept began with research on interaction design and user interviews and culminated with screenshots of the final design. The final concept included redesigns for the Mycalpoly login screen, the homepage, custom homepage, an example of extended tab view, and a sample search results page.
The following report includes background information on interaction design, as well as the process I went through to create my redesign for the Mycalpoly Portal.
