The History And Development Of Solo Tuba Repertoire, Vasilios Tidwell May 2023

The History And Development Of Solo Tuba Repertoire, Vasilios Tidwell

Honors Theses

The tuba's solo repertoire increased in quantity and quality as a result of developments in the instrument’s design and usage. Following the invention of the tuba in 1835, instrument makers experimented with design concepts to maximize the versatility and potential of the bass brass voice. Composers explored the various uses of the instrument, eventually making the tuba part of the standard orchestral instrumentation by the mid-nineteenth century. Following the instrument's acceptance into bands and orchestras, the first solo works for tuba emerged in the late nineteenth century.

Evolving from novelty pieces accompanied by wind or brass bands, tuba solo music …

A Selective Guide To Solo Bass Trombone Repertoire From 1961 To Present, Andrew Amadeus Ortega

This document includes works that were composed specifically for bass trombone from as early as 1961 to 2021. Each piece is categorized and presented with an evaluation in addition to a level of performance preferable for collegiate students to professional performers. Revising The Orchestral Reduction Of Jacques Ibert's Concerto For Flute And Orchestra, Nathan Stites Jan 2022

Revising The Orchestral Reduction Of Jacques Ibert's Concerto For Flute And Orchestra, Nathan Stites

Theses and Dissertations--Music

Given the popularity of Jacques Ibert’s Concerto for Flute and Orchestra amongst flautists, and the frequent need to perform the work with a pianist, the high-difficulty threshold of its current reduction for piano may prove to be a potential liability for both soloist and collaborator. For this project, solutions to the complications that arise as a result of the Concerto’s burdensome piano reduction were investigated. This investigation ultimately led to the construction of a carefully reworked version of the original orchestra reduction for piano—i.e., a revision. The purpose of this paper is to explain the editorial choices that went into …

An Application Of Natural Learning Processes In The Preparation Of Edward Gregson's Trumpet Concerto, James Jenkins Oct 2021

An Application Of Natural Learning Processes In The Preparation Of Edward Gregson's Trumpet Concerto, James Jenkins

Doctoral Projects

Concerto for Trumpet and Strings by Edward Gregson is a substantial work of the late twentieth century underperformed among trumpet players. The primary reasons for its relative neglect are its technical challenges and the demands of endurance it places on the player. A well-designed approach to the preparation of this work will benefit students and professional players wishing to prepare for a performance of the work. This project will combine the knowledge of researchers and teachers in formulating specific practice approaches for the concerto’s challenges.

The findings of neuroscientists and psychologists, gained through testing and measurement, will be consulted along …

The Origins And Development Of The Euphonium Concerto With Brass Band, Joel M. Collier May 2016

The Origins And Development Of The Euphonium Concerto With Brass Band, Joel M. Collier

Dissertations, 2014-2019

Since shortly after its invention, the euphonium has been utilized as a solo instrument, both in chamber music settings with piano, and with large ensembles such as brass bands and wind bands. However, it was not until the composition of Joseph Horovitz’s Euphonium Concerto in 1972 that the euphonium was genuinely regarded as a serious solo instrument in the brass band, capable of performing large-scale, substantial works.

In the following two decades, several composers wrote concerti for euphonium and brass band, each building on the technical demands of their predecessors. Their contributions established the basis of the genre, and also …

The ‘Μegaron’ Concerto For Guitar And String Orchestra By Nikita Koshkin: An Exploration Of Performance Issues, A Performing Edition And A Cd Recording, Elena Papandreou Feb 2014

The ‘Μegaron’ Concerto For Guitar And String Orchestra By Nikita Koshkin: An Exploration Of Performance Issues, A Performing Edition And A Cd Recording, Elena Papandreou

Doctoral

This dissertation puts the spotlight on the music of Nikita Koshkin (b. 1956)—Russia’s most important composer for guitar and one of the world’s leading composers for the instrument—and, in particular, his ‘Megaron’ Concerto for guitar and string orchestra, composed in 2005 and premiered in 2006 by this author. Performance issues are discussed in detail, in an innately practical manner, so that the guitarist who wishes to perform this work will have enough information to assist him. Moreover, a guitar instructor will find valuable guidance, not only for teaching this particular piece and other guitar music by Koshkin, but with regard …

The Second Oboe Concerto Of Sir William Herschel: A New Performance Edition, Matthew Thomas Guschl

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Sir William Herschel (1738-1822) is best known for his contributions to the field of astronomy. However, prior to his career in astronomy, Herschel was a professional musician. While living in Bath, England, Herschel developed an interest in astronomy. In 1781, he discovered the planet Uranus using a telescope of his own design. This was the first planetary discovery since the Classical Era. King George III was so impressed with Herschel's discovery that he offered Herschel an annual stipend with the condition that he quit his music career and move to Windsor so the royal family could have access to his …
