Essential Studies UNDergraduate Showcase
When most people think of the flute, the traditional, classical flute sound comes to mind. This research delved into the study of contemporary, non-traditional sounds (extended techniques) because of the number of advantages that the study of extended techniques can provide to all aspects of flute playing. For example, certain techniques can strengthen the flexibility and control of the facial muscles, which helps with tone production, while other techniques can help to develop better awareness and control of intonation. Many extended techniques require different levels of breath control and more comprehensive physical strength, as well. In researching extended techniques, it …

Three Flute Chamber Works By Alberto Ginastera: Intertwining Elements Of Art And Folk Music, Breta L. Neel
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performance
Alberto Ginastera’s output includes three chamber works containing the flute, all composed within the period of objective nationalism (1934-1947), a designation provided by the composer to encompass those works that present folk elements in an overt manner in a largely tonal framework. Impresiones de la Puna and Cantos del Tucumán, written in 1934 and 1938 respectively, contain salient folk elements and are thus representative pieces of this stylistic period. In addition to folk characteristics, these early works also contain pitch-class sets which serve to unify the pieces, thereby suggesting future elements of the composer’s style. The Duo for Flute …

The Biomechanics Of Music Performance, Rachel F. Bellisle, Jessika Decker
The Biomechanics Of Music Performance, Rachel F. Bellisle, Jessika Decker
Senior Honors Projects
When first learning to play a wind instrument, beginner musicians are taught how to hold their instrument and correctly position their body. They are taught how to sit, where to put their hands and fingers on the keys, and how to hold their arms. This initial lesson on posture and hand positioning is often short, as one quickly moves on to learn the embouchure and breathing techniques that allow sound to be produced. As a musician progresses in skill, positioning is emphasized more, and they learn that it can affect their risk of strain or injury and improve their sound …

Dedication inside front cover of the CD
"This recording has been a labour of love and a long journey which has finally come to fruition. It all began with an idea that developed into a doctoral dissertation The Flute Music of Luigi Zaninelli, which has now, many years later, culminated with this CD.
