Effects Of Live Music On Pain, Mood, And Exercise Adherence With Rehabilitation Patients, Victoria Storm Dec 2006

Effects Of Live Music On Pain, Mood, And Exercise Adherence With Rehabilitation Patients, Victoria Storm

Masters Theses

Incorporating music into treatment protocols is a non-pharmacological approach to pain management. Music can aid in mood and motivation, and assists in coordination of movement through rhythmic entrainment. Few studies have looked at the effectiveness of music on pain and mood while actively engaged in exercise. In this study, patients in an inpatient physical rehabilitation facility were provided with rhythmically synchronized music during upper extremities exercises. Self-reported ratings (McGill Pain Questionnaire - Short Form and Feeling Scale) of pain and mood were taken through a pretest post-test between subjects group design. Rate of Perceived Exertion (Borg's RPE) was taken post-test …

Teaching Music Theory In The Traditional Wind Band Rehearsal: A Rationale, Survey Of Materials, And Recommendations, Eric Lynn Harris Dec 2006

Teaching Music Theory In The Traditional Wind Band Rehearsal: A Rationale, Survey Of Materials, And Recommendations, Eric Lynn Harris

Dissertations

Band programs in today’s schools are facing pressures unheard of in the early days of the public school band movement. While budget limitations have always been a part of the public school dilemma, never before have directors been forced to fight so hard for the very existence of their programs. School administrators facing district, state, and federal testing pressures are spending more and more of the annual budget in an attempt to raise test scores. This means programs in the arts and even athletics are being greatly reduced (and in some cases eliminated) in school systems across the country. To …

An Overview Of Gerald R. Prescott’S 1935 “The Prescott Technic System” With Recommendations For A Contemporary Edition, Carson Lee Vermillion

Dissertations

Gerald R. Prescott (1902-2005) served as the Director of Bands at Mason City (Iowa) High School from 1927-31. During his tenure, Prescott established himself as an outstanding band director and music educator. While serving as the Director of Bands at the University of Minnesota, Prescott published The Prescott Technic System; a band curriculum employing excerpts from conservatory methods to develop individual technique. The system encompassed fourteen years of study, from beginning band through graduate school.

Due to the performance expectations placed on today’s instrumental music programs, little time remains for a sequenced individual course of study that adequately develops a …

Premiering Pierrot Lunaire, From Berlin To New York: Reception, Criticism, And Modernism, Clara S. Schauman Aug 2006

Premiering Pierrot Lunaire, From Berlin To New York: Reception, Criticism, And Modernism, Clara S. Schauman

Masters Theses

The relationship between a composer, his critics, and the public, presents a series of interactions through which to study the historical and artistic culture of a given society and its citizens. This study examines the Berlin (1912) and the New York (1923) premieres of Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot lunaire in order to demonstrate the importance of cultural context in forming critical reaction. I find that the cultural modernism and the relevance of the commedia dell’arte in Berlin led to an overall positive audience reaction despite Schoenberg’s unfamiliar compositional idiom. In contrast, the different cultural emphases in New York and the influence …

A Proposal For An Open Source System Of Development And Research For Music Cai, Daniel E. Clouse Aug 2006

A Proposal For An Open Source System Of Development And Research For Music Cai, Daniel E. Clouse

Masters Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the historical use of music Computer Assisted lnstruction (CAl) software to show that research on music CAl has decreased and to propose using a new method of coding and distribution (open source) that might increase research opportunities using music CAl. The reduction in research is due in part to limitations in existing software, as well as the practices of the music community. An open source CAl program called Mobius is described as an example of how open source programming can offer new opportunities for music researchers.

CAl software has played a prominent …

Redefining Multicultural Education And Its Applications In The General Music Classroom, Emily C. Hardwick Jul 2006

Redefining Multicultural Education And Its Applications In The General Music Classroom, Emily C. Hardwick

Theses and Dissertations

"Understanding music in relation to history and culture" is the ninth standard for music education developed by the National Association for Music Educators (MENC) in 1994 (Mark, 1996, p. 50). This principle is very broad and it is up to individual teachers to make sure they include history and multiculturalism in their curriculum. The term multicultural education is extensive and because many teachers do not understand what all it entails, some students do not get a comprehensive multicultural education. In the general music class for example, teaching students a Japanese folk song is a typical multicultural lesson. I do not …

An Investigation Into The Spectral Music Idiom And Its Association With Visual Imagery, Particularly That Of Film And Video, Brett Mabury Jun 2006

An Investigation Into The Spectral Music Idiom And Its Association With Visual Imagery, Particularly That Of Film And Video, Brett Mabury

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The exploration of timbre became increasingly significant throughout the 20th century, with some composers making it the essence of their music. This artistic development occurred in conjunction with a technological advancement that together would contribute to the birth of what is now called `spectral music' . Using computers, composers have been able to discover the spectra of frequencies that exist at different strengths for various sounds. The information realised then became the spectral musician' s primary ingredients for composing some extraordinary works. Despite its innovative quality, spectral music is yet to gain widespread interest amongst ensembles, orchestras and ultimately the …

Rock, Rhythm, And Rap, Wayne Helmly Jun 2006

Rock, Rhythm, And Rap, Wayne Helmly

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis suggests an alternative approach to teaching general music/music appreciation to students in grades 7-12 that incorporates the history of rock and roll and pop music. An approach to teaching rhythm reading skills through rap music is also suggested using Rockin ' Rhythm Raps by Cheryl Lavender (1998). Rare is the student that has not been saturated with popular culture during most of his or her lifetime. The case is made that teaching what is relevant to students, namely the history of vernacular music, can contribute significantly to the development of music appreciation. Sixteen lessons are provided. These lessons …

The Music Therapy Intern Working In End-Of-Life Care : A Study Of Personal Experience, Mary Delacy Kidwell

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

There is very little literature available on the personal experience of the music therapy intern, and not any specifically on the experience of the music therapy intern working in End-of-Life Care. Music therapy interns working with dying patients develop quite differently, as compared to those working with other populations. To provide music at the bedside of a dying patient is an extraordinary experience, one that seems to go beyond any level of preparedness. A survey examining the experiences of music therapy interns at the End-Of-Life Care was used to help participants share their experience about areas including: self-awareness, supervision, counseling …

Parallel Dichotomies: Serialism, Folk Song, The University, And Authenticity, David Blake May 2006

Parallel Dichotomies: Serialism, Folk Song, The University, And Authenticity, David Blake

Honors Capstone Projects - All

This thesis seeks to analyze the similarities between the electronic music and serialist movement in art music, and the folk revival, both of which peaked during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Each of these movements contained within them an avant-garde that positioned itself on the university setting to gain cultural terrain to combat what they perceived to be commercialized “kitsch.” The avant-gardes within each culture felt the ideologies they promoted were justified because they were authentic. Electronic music composers and serialists viewed themselves as aligned with the modernist tradition of art music, which promoted the progression of music through …

A Conductor’S Guide To Wind Instrument Deficiencies: A Practical Addendum To The Undergraduate Conducting Text, Donald Bradley Snow May 2006

A Conductor’S Guide To Wind Instrument Deficiencies: A Practical Addendum To The Undergraduate Conducting Text, Donald Bradley Snow

Dissertations

commonly used undergraduate conducting texts that teach the correction of wind intonation deficiencies. Research has indicated that conductors must be aware of and be trained to recognize and correct intonation deficiencies of wind instruments. Music teachers must understand acoustical differences among just, Pythagorean, and tempered tuning systems. Nonetheless, existing pedagogical materials for undergraduate conductors in training are of little or no help. The supplemental text addresses intonation deficiencies and provides musical examples and exercises to help the young conductor gain an understanding of the factors that adversely affect the intonation of wind instruments. The body of literature on the subject …

Vilma Weber Von Webenau : Die Marienlieder, Sommerlieder Für Streichquartett Und Eine Sprechstimme, Carolyn Dehdari Apr 2006

Vilma Weber Von Webenau : Die Marienlieder, Sommerlieder Für Streichquartett Und Eine Sprechstimme, Carolyn Dehdari

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Vilma von Webenau (1875-1953) is not only worthy of study because of her connection with teacher Arnold Schoenberg. Her music is unique in the era of fin-de-siecle Vienna, but it also holds interest today because of its atmoshpheric and durational complexity, self-composed texts, and harmonic ambiguities. This critical edition seeks not only to present two of WEbenau's seventy works, but also to place Webenau in her historical and musical context. Exploring the aspects of Viennese modernism and the world that created it, I wish to give background to Webenau's life, of which so little is known. In trying to understand …

Structural Elegance And Harmonic Disparity In Selected Solos By Jazz Trumpeters Freddie Hubbard And Woody Shaw, Edward Rex Richardson Jan 2006

Structural Elegance And Harmonic Disparity In Selected Solos By Jazz Trumpeters Freddie Hubbard And Woody Shaw, Edward Rex Richardson

LSU Major Papers

Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw were two of the greatest figures in the jazz trumpet pantheon from their emergence in the 1960s until the 1980s. They were both unusual personalities; almost as well known for their volatility as for their instrumental virtuosity and creativity. Their association was characterized by competition and a certain degree of discomfort: Shaw, born nearly seven years after Hubbard, was often compared to his elder in a fashion that seemed to denigrate the younger trumpeter’s originality; he in turn often denied that he’d ever been directly influenced by Hubbard, in what appears to have been an …

The French Songs Of Lee Hoiby, Scott Lagraff Jan 2006

The French Songs Of Lee Hoiby, Scott Lagraff

LSU Major Papers

Lee Hoiby has written almost a hundred songs, nearly all of them in English, but an interesting and growing subset of his oeuvre is settings of French texts. This document delves deeply into six of them: the sets Three French Songs (formerly Trois Poèmes de Rimbaud, 1982) and Chants d’Exil (2002). The study begins with brief biographical and stylistic synopses, including an examination of the influence of Schubert’s songs on Hoiby’s own. Subsequent chapters include discussions of the poets Arthur Rimbaud and Marcel Osterrieth, analyses of their poetry, and musical analyses of Hoiby's settings, focusing on the relationship between text …

Semiotic Modeling: Relevance To Trumpet Performance And Musical Interpretation Using Paul Hindemith's Sonata For Trumpet And Piano, Craig David Heinzen

LSU Major Papers

This paper is about the use of semiotics for the purpose of improving technical efficiency and musical interpretation in brass performance. Semiotics is the study of signs. The field is rooted in linguistics and logic, but has widened its influences to musicology and music theory in the last several decades. This paper constructs a model which simplifies music performance. The model has two components that address physical demands and musical analysis. The first component is a mathematically-based visual representation of the air stream used in brass performance. The second component of the model uses a reductive analysis. This analysis is …

Brazilian composer Osvaldo Lacerda (b. 1927) is an important figure in the Brazilian nationalist school of composition, following the tradition of Camargo Guarnieri. This study examines Brazilian nationalistic elements in the Brasilianas, a series of twelve suites for piano composed by Lacerda. These piano suites, written between 1965 and 1993, each comprise four movements, utilizing a wide variety of genres. This monograph is divided into three chapters. The first chapter provides a background on Brazilian history and Brazilian musical nationalism. The second chapter consists of information about Lacerda. The third chapter contains historical aspects and musical characteristics of the genres …
