Influencing Metacognition Through Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning: Lessons Learned From A Faculty Learning Community, Sara Ahten, Rob Anson, Ingrid Brudenell, James Goodman, Eric Orton, Kathy Reavy

Sara M. Ahten

Over an academic year, five faculty and one staff member from diverse disciplines at Boise State University formed a faculty learning community (FLC). Meeting in-person twice a month, the community members worked to complete scholarly group and individual learning projects. Metacognition emerged as a theme and goal for collaborative computer-supported learning activities. They developed a model that fostered metacognition within the FLC as well as in student-focused learning projects. Overall, the projects illustrate the model and how faculty can influence metacognition though computer-supported collabora- tive learning. Specific applications and suggestions to promote learning are included.

Tsen Brider: A Jewish Requiem, Joshua R. Jacobson Dec 2010

Tsen Brider: A Jewish Requiem, Joshua R. Jacobson

Joshua R. Jacobson

In 1939 a Jewish choral conductor imprisoned in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp organized a clandestine choir. The choir and its conductor managed to rehearse and perform secretly for three years. Sensing that the end was near, in 1942 the ensemble was rehearsing its own "Jewish Requiem" when the deportation order arrived. Neither the conductor nor any of his singers survived, but the "Jewish Requiem" did survive. This article chronicles the origins and fate of this unique composition.

'Some Quite Nice Little Tunes': An Overview Of The Preparation And Recording Of The Incipits For The Britten Thematic Catalogue, Jonathan Manton Nov 2010

'Some Quite Nice Little Tunes': An Overview Of The Preparation And Recording Of The Incipits For The Britten Thematic Catalogue, Jonathan Manton

Jonathan Manton

Due for completion in 2013, the Britten thematic catalogue, an online musicological research tool that will present detailed individual records charting Britten's entire compositional output (approximately 1,200 works both published and unpublished including all juvenilia), is currently being compiled at the Britten-Pears Foundation in the United Kingdom. As this resource will be published exclusively online, it is the project's intention to fully employ the benefits afforded to the catalog through its virtual format, specifically when presenting thematic incipits for each work. In addition to typeset incipits, which in the case of the Britten thematic catalogue will extend beyond the traditional 'opening fragment of music,' …

Shaking The Closet: Analyzing Johnny Mathis’S Sexual Elusiveness, 1956-1982, Vincent L. Stephens Nov 2010

Shaking The Closet: Analyzing Johnny Mathis’S Sexual Elusiveness, 1956-1982, Vincent L. Stephens

Vincent L Stephens

Though pop crooner Johnny Mathis inadvertently revealed his homosexuality in a 1982 “off-the-record” interview his sexuality had long been an open secret prior to this disclosure. “Shaking the Closet” argues that the notion of “the closet” is insufficient for understanding Mathis’s career and those of many other seemingly “closeted” queer public figures. The presentation suggests that the non-threatening sexual image Mathis presented in the 1950s was an overt commercial strategy intended to appease white audiences and adhere to an imperative for public respectability, an enduring theme within African-American cultural politics. Despite these seeming compromises close critical attention to his musical …

Mortal Motivations: Reflections On 15 Years Of Perfect Beat (1992-2007), Philip Hayward Oct 2010

Mortal Motivations: Reflections On 15 Years Of Perfect Beat (1992-2007), Philip Hayward

Professor Philip Hayward

Research journals are established for a variety of (often overlapping) reasons. Those emanating from academia often reflect the agendas and aspirations of individuals, departments, inter-departmental teams, institutions and/or sectors. Other factors are broader: encompassing politics, intellectual fashions, the zeitgeist (as perceived from a particular standpoint) and/or the opportunities opened up by funding (etc). But whatever the initial motivation, simply establishing a journal is in many ways the easy part of the process. In terms of enabling and sustaining it, two principal tasks arise. The first is to identify, nurture and/or mentor contributors. The second is to create a SUbscription and/or …

Transcience And Durability: Music Industry Initiatives, Shima Uta And The Maintenance Of Amani Culture, Philip Hayward, Sueo Kuwahara

Professor Philip Hayward

This article analyses the contemporary situation of the traditional Amami shima uta song genre and, in particular, the role of the music industry in promoting and marketing it. This discussion engages with debates about the nature of 'world music' and international product marketing articulated in popular music studies over the last decade and, in particular, the analysis offered by Feld (2000) - inflecting these to address local cultural maintenance.

From The Top: Local Difference And Issues Of Heritage Identity In The Formulation Of Music Policy For Darwin, Philip Hayward Oct 2010

From The Top: Local Difference And Issues Of Heritage Identity In The Formulation Of Music Policy For Darwin, Philip Hayward

Professor Philip Hayward

In November 2004 Ian Buchanan, Professor of Cultural Studies at Charles Darwin University (Darwin), arranged for me to meet Dr Rolf Gerritsen, Director of Economic Policy in the Department of the Chief Minister, Northern Territory Government, to discuss his idea for the development of Darwin as a 'creative city' along the lines suggested by Richard Florida (2002, 2005). The particular aspect of Gerritsen's plans that interested me was his desire for music culture to play a strong role in establising and promoting that identity. During the discussion with him I made strong arguments that any such development should be informed …

Bounty Chords: Music, Dance And Cultural Heritage On Norfolk And Pitcairn Islands, Philip Hayward Oct 2010

Bounty Chords: Music, Dance And Cultural Heritage On Norfolk And Pitcairn Islands, Philip Hayward

Professor Philip Hayward

Bounty Chords maps a rich and complex cultural history. Beginning with the Bounty mutiny in 1789, Philip Hayward analyses the establishment of the first Pitcairn Island settlement by mutineers and Tahitians in 1790, the mass relocation to Norfolk Island in 1855 and the subsequent development of the two island communities. Focusing on the central role of song and dance in forging local heritage and identity,Haywardprovides a vivid picture of the hybrid societies that developed on Pitcairn andNorfolk islands during the 19th and 20th centuries. Drawing on a wide range of historical sources and his own interactions with musicians and dancers, …
