In November, 2005 a landmark government report entitled the National Review of School Music Education was released. The report found that there was a great variability in the quality of music education in schools. It was acknowledged that although there are some excellent music programs in schools, there is 'cycles of neglect and inequity' and greater support is required for teachers and the subject itself. The report acknowledged the influence of recent curriculum developments in Australia including integrating the arts into one subject. This chapter seeks to take the characters and situations of Gay's The Beggar's Opera and consider how closely the play's portrayal matches the historical record. Although the view offered by the play is a restricted one, the chapter concludes that the picture it offers is as close to historical reality as any other document from the period.

The Sound Of The Suburbs: A Case Study Of Three Garage Bands In San Jose, California During The 1960s, Paul Kauppila

The Chocolate Watchband, the Count Five, and the Syndicate of Sound were three garage bands from San Jose, California. During the 1960s, before the high‐tech economy transformed the Santa Clara Valley into Silicon Valley, San Jose was a culturally sleepy suburb. This paper will examine these three groups in the context of 1960s culture and society and will compare and contrast their image and musical output with that of the better‐known “hippie” music scene originating an hour north in San Francisco.

A Quantitative Model Of Key Distance, With An Analysis And Performance Of Schumann’S "Märchenbilder", Op. 113 (Music Theory Presentation, Lecture-Recital), Dominic Dousa, Renee Skerik

Musicians are familiar with the traditional categorizations of key relationships: closely related, parallel, relative, and foreign. While some of these terms do describe well the relatedness of keys, they do not provide a clear means of comparing the relative remoteness of all keys from a particular reference key. For example, how much “more distant” is E-flat major from C major than is G major or D minor? The model presented in this lecture includes a number of important factors that may affect the perception of key relationships and assigns numerical measures to those factors. Dr. Wilson coached local grade-school, middle-school, and high school singers from the Sun City Youth Opera in their summer musical production Broadway Scenes. This production was hosted by Dr. Wilson on the UTEP campus, and involved Music Theatre Company students as mentors and technical staff.
