Crossover Considerations: Performing Three Works By Ludmila Ulehla, Phil Woods And Bill Dobbins, John M. Perrine

LSU Major Papers

When musicians prepare a piece of music for performance, they utilize various sources of background knowledge that are available to them. This knowledge can be organized into groups of stylistic attributes suited for the various genres that are in question. This process is made possible by the perspective that history provides. One can comprise a compendium of performance practices provided evidence exists of consistency throughout the style period being addressed. An exciting opportunity presents itself when dealing with the present time. The relationship between the collaborating performers of any music is a delicate one. This task is made challenging with …

The Effects Of Singing On Blood Pressure In Classically Trained Singers, Kimberly Jaye Broadwater Jan 2002

The Effects Of Singing On Blood Pressure In Classically Trained Singers, Kimberly Jaye Broadwater

LSU Major Papers

Blood pressure readings were taken in four normotensive, classically trained singers of varying age and experience. The results show changes during the systolic and diastolic phases of blood pressure measurements while singing. While systolic blood pressure changes were individualized and random, diastolic blood pressure changes generally showed a direct correlation to changes in intrathoracic pressure. Additional research using a larger subject base involving normotensive, hypertensive, and hypotensive populations is warranted.

A Conductor's Study Of George Rochberg's Three Psalm Settings, David Lawrence Jan 2002

A Conductor's Study Of George Rochberg's Three Psalm Settings, David Lawrence

LSU Major Papers

Contemporary choral music in general and George Rochberg’s in particular present challenges to the conductor well beyond the traditional repertoire including complex harmonies and rhythms, tone clusters, sprechstimme, and unconventional notation. In addition, the conductor must alter usual score preparation techniques and acquire a more detailed knowledge about differences in twentieth century music. He/she must learn the techniques of contemporary music through study in theory and analysis. The conductor can also take advantage of many available books and journals that offer insight into the study, rehearsal, and performance of this music. As the conductor acquires the necessary skill in twentieth …

"The Neumeister Collection Of Chorale Preludes Of The Bach Circle": An Examination Of The Chorale Preludes Of J. S. Bach And Their Usage As Service Music And Pedagogical Works, Sara Ann Jones

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

One of the most significant discoveries of the twentieth century was the finding of an unpublished compendium of German Baroque keyboard music in 1982 in the archives of the John Herrick Music Library, Yale University, by musicologists Christoph Wolff and Hans-Joachim Schultz and Yale University librarian Harold E. Samuel. The collection, which was entitled LM 4708: THE NEUMEISTER COLLECTION OF CHORALE PRELUDES OF THE BACH CIRCLE, contains eighty-two previously unknown chorale preludes by several prominent German Baroque organists including Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706), Johann Michael Bach (1648-1694), Johann Christoph Bach (1642-1703), and Johann Sebastian Bach (1658-1750). Historically, it is an important …

A Model For Evaluation Of Selected Compositions For Unaccompanied Solo Trumpet According To Criteria Of Serious Artistic Merit, Michael Craig Bellinger Jan 2002

A Model For Evaluation Of Selected Compositions For Unaccompanied Solo Trumpet According To Criteria Of Serious Artistic Merit, Michael Craig Bellinger

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This document presents a pilot study for evaluating the serious artistic merit of unaccompanied solo trumpet literature. The model for use in the study was derived from the efforts of two wind band literature researchers, Acton E. Ostling, Jr. and Jay W. Gilbert. Ostling wrote his dissertation in 1978 and Gilbert replicated and updated the research in 1993. The primary element of the Ostling and Gilbert studies was a carefully defined collection of ten criteria used to evaluate the quality of each work. A 5-point Likert scale was the unit of measurement. The outcome of this adaptation was a rank …

The Works Of Manuel Quiroga: A Catalogue, Ana Luque Fernandez

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Manuel Quiroga Losada (1892-1961), violinist, composer, and artist, was one of the foremost figures of the first half of the 20th century. This study tries to bring to light his musical legacy, a long overdue task. Until now, all attempts to rediscover the figure of Quiroga have centered mainly on his career as a violinist, his recordings or his paintings, however not on his compositions. This document is an inventory of the forty-four pieces for violin solo, violin and piano, and violin and orchestra written by Quiroga. Manuel Quiroga mainly wrote for the violin in the form of short pieces …

American composer Daron Aric Hagen (b. 1961) is emerging as one of America's brightest young composers of the twenty-first century. Ned Rorem, the champion of American art song, believes Hagen to be a composer of great ability and skill. This study deals with the miniature folk opera Dear Youth (1990) which is composed of eight songs for soprano, piano, and flute. The songs are "The Bonnie Blue Flag" (Ketchum), "I Stop Again" (Ropes), "The Picture Graved Into My Heart" (Ropes), "The Trouble Was Tom..." Rediscovering Frédéric Chopin's "Trois Nouvelles Études", Qiao-Shuang Xian Jan 2002

Rediscovering Frédéric Chopin's "Trois Nouvelles Études", Qiao-Shuang Xian

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Frédéric Chopin’s Trois Nouvelles Études (Three New Études) were composed in 1839 at the request of François Fétis and Ignaz Moshceles for inclusion in a new and elaborate piano teaching method. While these new studies are less dramatic and brilliant than Chopin’s two previous sets of Études, op. 10 and 25, they are no less concerned with expressive musical qualities and they are of equal artistic merit to any of Chopin’s earlier Études. The monograph’s five chapters deal with specific aspects of these works. Chapter One traces the historical background of the Three Nouvelles Études. Chapter Two is devoted to …

Lee Hoiby’s Concerto No. 2 for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 33, completed in 1980, is a welcome addition to the piano concerto repertory. The concerto was first performed June 6, 1980, in Chicago by Lee Hoiby with the American Chamber Symphony conducted by Robert Frisbie. This concerto contains the usual three movements and reflects many stylistic traits of late Romantic music. The first chapter includes biographical information about Hoiby, …

"Los Motz E.L So": Words Melody, And Their Interaction In The Songs Of Folquet De Marseille, Nancy Ellen Washer Jan 2002

"Los Motz E.L So": Words Melody, And Their Interaction In The Songs Of Folquet De Marseille, Nancy Ellen Washer

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Although the poems of the troubadours have been extensively studied almost since they were first composed and the troubadours themselves indicate that they tried to create interactions between the melodies and the words, the melodies and the interactions between the poems and melodies in the complete songs have been examined much less intensively. In this dissertation I delve into the songs of the late twelfth-century troubadour Folquet de Marseille whose thirteen songs surviving with their melodies provide a varied collection of a suitable size to permit intensive analysis of poetic and musical compositional practices and the interactions between the two. …

Text And Structure In Schoenberg's Op. 50, And An Original Composition, Symphony #1, Thomas, Jr. Michael Couvillon Jan 2002

Text And Structure In Schoenberg's Op. 50, And An Original Composition, Symphony #1, Thomas, Jr. Michael Couvillon

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Part One of this document provides an analytical study of Schoenberg's final opus, Op. 50, three religious choral works written in the serial style: Driemal Tausend Jahre, Op. 50a (1949), De Profundis, Op. 50b (1950), and Modern Psalm, Op. 50c (1951). This study is divided into five chapters: an introduction, a conclusion, and a chapter of analysis for each of the three pieces. Analysis of these pieces reveals three significant conclusions: 1) Schoenberg consistently incorporates areas of relative consonance and pitch emphasis into his serial structures; 2) these areas of pitch emphasis, together with other musical devices are used to …

Alban Berg's Filmic Music: Intentions And Extensions Of The Film Music Interlude In The Opera Lula, Melissa Ursula Dawn Goldsmith Jan 2002

Alban Berg's Filmic Music: Intentions And Extensions Of The Film Music Interlude In The Opera Lula, Melissa Ursula Dawn Goldsmith

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The music composed to accompany the film in Berg’s Opera Lulu--the “Film Music Interlude” (FMI)--is the subject of this study. Although this is film music, and Berg wrote his own Film Music Scenario, scholars have ignored writings about film theory and film music in their historical and analytical treatments of the FMI. How do writings about film theory and film music apply to the analysis and exploration of historical and social contexts of the FMI, and what musical and extramusical intentions and extensions can be drawn from the FMI? Some answers come to light while exploring sources containing Berg’s correspondence …

Concerto For Trumpet And Orchestra, Matthew Scott Schaffner Jan 2002

Concerto For Trumpet And Orchestra, Matthew Scott Schaffner

LSU Master's Theses

Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra (2002) is a three-movement composition for orchestra and solo trumpet. Each movement has a prominent theme, although there are themes that pervade the entire composition. The main element in the work is a two-note rhythmic statement. This two-note statement unifies the piece. Another prominent idea is a pitch collection of three consecutive minor seconds and their inversions. The first movement, Incipience, begins with a slow foreshadowing of the work’s main themes. Following the introduction is a quick fanfare that leads back to the opening material. A trumpet cadenza develops from the introductory ideas, which leads …

Aspects Of Jazz And Classical Music In David N. Baker's Ethnic Variations On A Theme Of Paganini, Heather Koren Pinson Jan 2002

Aspects Of Jazz And Classical Music In David N. Baker's Ethnic Variations On A Theme Of Paganini, Heather Koren Pinson

LSU Master's Theses

David Baker's Ethnic Variations on a Theme of Paganini (1976) for violin and piano bring together stylistic elements of jazz and classical music, a synthesis for which Gunther Schuller in 1957 coined the term "third stream." In regard to classical aspects, Baker's work is modeled on Nicolo Paganini's Twenty-fourth Caprice for Solo Violin, itself a theme and variations. From Paganini,it borrows aspects of melody, harmony, and articulation, not only of the theme but also the variations. In regard to jazz, Baker transforms most variations (including the theme, which in comparison to Paganini's is already a variation) into distinct styles related …

Paradise: In A Dream, Jonathan Beresford Horrocks Jan 2002

Paradise: In A Dream, Jonathan Beresford Horrocks

LSU Master's Theses

Paradise: In a Dream is a poem by Christina Rossetti, which is based on a dream the author had of heaven. It was my goal to give this masterpiece a musical dimension: expanding its meaning and giving the experience dramatic implications. The harmonic language and tensions come from the words of the poem. I used progressive tonality to tie the twentieth-century musical element to the romantic idiom of the poem. There are two important musical themes. The “song of Paradise” theme is Schubertian and dance-like, appearing for the first time before the second verse (meas. 32). The theme of earthly …

The Effects Of Internet Guided Practice With Aural Modeling On The Sight-Singing Accuracy Of Elementary Education Majors, Jessica L. Hall Jan 2002

The Effects Of Internet Guided Practice With Aural Modeling On The Sight-Singing Accuracy Of Elementary Education Majors, Jessica L. Hall

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of aural modeling in guided practice through the Internet on the sight-singing improvement of elementary education majors. Students enrolled in a music methods course for elementary education majors (N=37) used software delivered via the Internet to practice sight-singing. The experimental web page included visual examples of sight-singing exercises as well as aural modeling of each of the exercises. The control web page included only visual examples. A t test for independent samples indicated no significant difference in the posttest scores of the two groups in rhythm (p > .05), pitch on …
