Naxos, Jussi Bjorling Collection #8: "O Sole Mio", Kristian Krogholm

Newsletter of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

A new great CD from Naxos in the JB Collection with careful restorations and transfers by Stefan Lindstrom, whose reproductions include some surface noise but consequently leave more of Jussi Bjorling's voice. Seldom have the old 78s been transferred to CD with such clarity and total balance, always maintaining Jussi Bjorling's voice in absolute focus. Mr. Lindstrom is always faithful to the actual sound of the source, never trying to create anything other than what is on the original recording, thus obtaining a more truthful result.

Of The Great Voices Of The Past Century, Which Does The Public Most Want To Hear?, John Steane

Newsletter of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

More or less everything, it seems, is now "historical" if it dates back beyond the day before yesterday. At least it won't be long before 100 years of recording will be seen as falling under that heading. A hundred years, among other things, of singing voices. And if the recent lists are any indication, whom from out of that century of singers does the general public most want to hear? The name that leads all the rest, by some distance, is Jussi Bjorling. The edition on Naxos reaches its seventh volume, a collection of songs is published on one label …

Our JB Society has been glad to bring Volumes 4 and 5 of Naxos's "JB Collection" to our members, and now you can order Vol. 6 from the Museum: This includes all 12 "Erik Odde" recordings of Jussi with his dance-band accompaniments from 1932-33, as well as slightly more substantial music recorded under his own name (e.g. three songs from a 1933 competition for the "best summer song" of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden). We have heard Vol. 6 and can assure you that Stefan Lindstrom's remasterings are noticeably warmer and easier to listen to than previous transcriptions.

We are glad to welcome the latest two CDs in Naxos's "Jussi Bjorling Collection," Vols. 4 and 5, and here give Kristian Krogholm's review of Vol. 5 since it contains the wonderful song recital that RCA published in 1952 as "Jussi Bjorling in Song," but never re-released on CD. Here's Kristian's October 1 letter from Norway:

The Naxos Bjorling, William C. Clayton

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

Another CD collection of Jussi's HMV 78s has appeared, this time on Naxos 8.110701- Jussi Bjorling: Opera Arias. These twenty-three selections, dating from 1936 through 1948, amount to a hit parade of favorite tenor arias from Jussi's HMV 78s made during those years, all the best known standard takes, and all recorded in Stockholm with Nils Grevillius conducting "his" orchestra. Thus they are certainly contained on the EMI four-disc Jussi Bjorling Edition: Studio Recordings 1930-1959 (7243 5 66306 2 8 Mono), reviewed in our 3Q99 issue. The best news is the vastly improved sound of the transfers here (even …
