The Leader Who Serves (Scottsdale, Az), C. William Pollard
C. William Pollard Papers
In this address to the Baptist Healthcare Association (Scottsdale, AZ), Pollard applauds religious healthcare institutions for their commitment to the physical and spiritual welfare of the human person. With this holistic approach, they refuse to submit to the logic of simple economic efficiency and thus serve as a prime example of servant leadership.

Attitudes Toward Sexuality And Sexual Behaviors Of Asian-American Adolescents: Implications For Risk Of Hiv Infection, Connie S. Chan
Attitudes Toward Sexuality And Sexual Behaviors Of Asian-American Adolescents: Implications For Risk Of Hiv Infection, Connie S. Chan
Institute for Asian American Studies Publications
Until 1990, Asian Americans represented an ethnic minority group that was perceived to be at lower risk than African Americans or Hispanics/Latinos for HIV infection, the presumed causal agent for AIDS. Reasons cited for this perception include behavioral differences in intravenous drug use, sexual behavioral habits, and underidentification of AIDS cases. However, in urban areas such as San Francisco, Toronto, New York, Boston, Los Angeles, and Seattle, where Asians have immigrated and settled in large numbers, cases of HIV infection and AIDS have begun to increase dramatically, perhaps reflecting the rise in the number of AIDS cases in Asia. Selecting Subjects For Participation In Clinical Research: An Empirical Inquiry And Ethical Analysis, Charles Weijer
Selecting Subjects For Participation In Clinical Research: An Empirical Inquiry And Ethical Analysis, Charles Weijer
Philosophy Publications
Procedures for the selection of subjects for participation in randomized clinical trials--usually formalized as eligibility criteria in the study protocol--have both scientific and ethical implications. In this thesis, I undertake an examination of eligibility criteria at three stages in the genesis and dissemination of medical knowledge: clinical trial protocol, interpretation by investigators, and reporting of study results.
In the first chapter, ethical issues in subject selection are reviewed and the main study questions are presented. In the second chapter, the results of an examination of eligibility criteria in two sets of clinical trials, one sponsored by the NSABP, the other …

Occupation As Spiritual Activity, Brenda S. Howard, Jay R. Howard
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
Although spirituality is rarely explicitly mentioned in the occupational therapy literature, it is implied as an interwoven part of the human system. This article explores the meaning of occupation in the context of sociological and Judeo-Christian theological frameworks and the meaning of spirituality in the occupational therapy clinic. A case is made for acknowledging spirituality in clinical reasoning as a centralizing component of the patients' motivation and assignment of meaning to life.
