In 1688 a legal text, Renovación, was printed in Mexico City, the capital of the Viceroyalty of New Spain, that explains a twelve year trial that focuses on determining if a 16th century sculpture miraculously renewed itself. The final decision came from the Archbishop of Mexico City. A year after the book’s publication, the sculpture was recognized as miraculous. In 1699, ten years after this event, the author of Renovación wrote another book that narrates the same sculpture's history, Exaltación, but addressed a wider audience, and from a religious and pious perspective. School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

In order to better understand the meaning of the Eucharist, in this paper I describe three theologians’ views about the Eucharist. Their views represent three denominations of the Church. They are: Martin Luther (Lutheran), Alexander Schmemann (Orthodox), and Thomas Merton (Roman Catholic). I compare their views from three aspects: The meaning of the presence of Jesus Christ in bread and wine in the Eucharist, the qualification of receiving communion, and the entire meaning of the Eucharist.

Psalms, Hymns, Or Spiritual Songs?: A Millennial’S Journey With The Worship Wars, Courtney E. Fritz

Selected Honors Theses

Since the 1980’s, the rise of popular and rock n’ roll music has had a significant impact on the music in Protestant churches. The emergence of the Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) industry, fueled by the popularity of these types of music, changed how many churches use music in their gatherings. The widespread use of popular music in the church (often causing hymnals to be discarded) caused a major rift among congregations, a term coined the “worship wars.” This argument is still being fought today. This paper is designed to give an overview of other times in history when the church …

A Historical Perspective On The Marketing Strategies Of Contemporary Christian Music In Relation To Its Evangelistic Purpose With Recommendations For Future Outreach, Autumn E. Gillen

Selected Honors Theses

Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) is an effective tool for the evangelism of Christianity. With its origins dating back to the late 1960s, CCM resembles musical styles of popular-secular culture while retaining fundamental Christian values in lyrical content. This historical perspective of CCM marketing strategies, CCM music television, CCM and secular music, arts worlds within CCM, and the science of storytelling in CCM aims to provide readers with the context and understanding of the significant role that CCM plays in modern-day evangelism. This thesis will present CCM as an integrational religious style of music, meaning that it targets both Christian and …

The Function Of Liturgical Music Within The History Of The Catholic Church, Christopher Cuzzupe

Within the Catholic Church, there has always been a need and a strong presence for music. The need for music has changed from being simply something listened to by all and sung by a few to involving everyone to sing together and participate in liturgical celebrations. There is great richness to be gained from an increased awareness of music in the Church, and many important lessons can be learned from the historical progression of liturgical music. The effect music has had on the liturgy has directly affected the congregation based upon their needs. The central questions addressed within this thesis …

A church-wide emphasis, with preaching and teaching, provided the platform for instilling in members of Polkville Baptist Church a better understanding of the individual's role in the community of faith, the goal being that a greater percentage of members take an active role in the church. The twelve-member research group was tracked individually, and the control group was tracked as a unit. Following the emphasis, care was taken to discover if there were more members involved in the life of the church than before the emphasis. There was a clear growth in understanding and in the number of active members.
