Trent could not have been clearer. Images were permitted in churches to instruct the faithful and confirm their faith. And bishops should approve only those commissions and depictions that would serve such purposes. Late in 1563, the council's twenty-fifth and final session explicitly advised that "stories of the mysteries of our redemption . . . in paintings and other representations" enable visitors to reflect on articles of the faith challenged at that time by Protestants less well disposed to the use of images. The author discusses Christ's presence as perceived and symbolized when an assembly gathers to celebrate Eucharist. Her article consists of four parts: (1) a brief review of recent official church documents on the mode of Christ's presence; (2) an examination of how the relationship of Christ's presence in the eucharistic species to his presence in the Church gathered for worship has been articulated in Christian tradition and in selected 20th-century writings; (3) a consideration of Michael Polanyi's semiotics and Louis Marie Chauvet's theology of symbol; and (4) an application of their thinking to key symbols in the gathering rite of …

Reading The Sign Of The Times: The Humanities, The Catholic Intellectual Tradition, And The Catholic Church, Michelle Loris Ph.D.

This essay proposes that the humanities (and new directions in the humanities) as the centrepiece of the Catholic intellectual tradition can help the Catholic Church “read the signs of the times” in the contemporary world and in that way the Church can better serve the human family of God.
