The increasing ubiquity of digital technologies has facilitated the merging of media content and their metadata within multiple indexing and retrieval systems. In the case of recorded music, individuals can download and store digitized audio (as well as video) content on computers and portable media devices. Conversely, with the emergence of social networking platforms, users can share files, as well as textual content (e.g. comments, reviews, and tags), by uploading them to Websites with music-related content. In this article the author discusses aspects of nontextual searching for library patrons who don't know the name of a musical piece or movement. She discusses the variety of reasons why traditional library catalogs can't account for musical content, such as melody, chords, and rhythm, the use of thematic catalogs, which indexes a composer's works and includes the first few bars of each piece or movement, and mobile device applications, such as SoundHound.
