The Federal Music Project: An American Voice In Depression-Era Music, Audrey S. Rutt
Musical Offerings
After World War I, America was musically transformed from an outsider in the European classical tradition into a country of musical vibrance and maturity. These great advances, however, were deeply threatened by the Wall Street crash of 1929 and the consequent Great Depression. The nation that, for the first time, was developing an international reputation in the arts now faced a crisis of how to support them. Government sponsorship of the arts through the New Deal Federal One projects allowed struggling artists to survive economically during this era. In the realm of music, however, the Federal Music Project (FMP) had …

Political Science Capstone Research Papers
Governments and countries throughout history have risen and fallen while some have carried on through the years. However, some countries look very different from when they existed in previous times. Rulers and leaders have utilized many responses to rebellions and secessionist movements. These responses range from bloody and/or political repression, devolution, simply declaring secession unconstitutional or illegal, economic concessions/incentives, or even simply ignoring the problem. There is not only the debate as to what is the best way to put down a rebellion or secessionist movement, but also what is the right/moral response that the government should do to keep …

Domestic Ethnic Nationalism And Regional European Transnationalism: A Confluence Of Impediments Opposing Turkey’S Eu Accession Bid, Glen M.E. Duerr
History and Government Faculty Presentations
The proliferation of European Union (EU) institutions has served, in part, to change the nature of identity in Europe. Not only do people identify with their national state, but they also increasingly identify themselves as European. The structure of the EU currently falls between the positions of intergovernmentalism and supranationalism, and this debate helps to explain the middle ground between concurrent identifications with the national state and also with the continent.
This paper specifically examines statements made by three nationalist parties in Western Europe including Vlaams Belang (VB) in Belgium, Front National (FN) in France, and the Freedom Party (FPO) …
Compounding The Policy Platform Of Independence: Nationalist Party “Diffusion” In Quebec And Flanders, Glen M.E. Duerr
Compounding The Policy Platform Of Independence: Nationalist Party “Diffusion” In Quebec And Flanders, Glen M.E. Duerr
History and Government Faculty Presentations
The proliferation of nationalist political parties in the developed world continues to challenge the integrity of some of the world’s most stable democracies. In Canada and Belgium, both countries have experienced the challenge of nationalist parties in the province of Quebec and region of Flanders respectively. However, in both cases, there are now at least two nationalist political parties that both support the idea of independence for both Quebec and Flanders. This nationalist party “diffusion” further challenges the integrity of the Canadian and Belgian states.
The Parti Quebecois has served as the main sponsor of nationalism in the province of …

Traversing Borders: Supranationalism, Public Policy And The Framing Of Undocumented Immigration In The United States And The United Kingdom, Glen M.E. Duerr
History and Government Faculty Publications
This paper examines the issue of how undocumented immigration is framed by comparing case studies of the United Kingdom and the United States. The role of the media and social construction are integral to this debate and this has, in part, led to more domestic bills aimed at tackling undocumented immigration. In the United Kingdom, the issue of undocumented immigration has led to the recent drafting of a bill by Home Secretary John Reid to address the issue. This bill has only served to polarize the population and energize the far-right. In the United States, rival bills in the House …

History and Government Faculty Publications
This article is a research note addressing various theoretical and methodological issues in the measurement and analysis of religiosity and secularism and their relationship to quantifiable measures of social health in advanced and prosperous democracies. Particular attention is given to cross-national frameworks for studying religiosity and secularism as well as to the conceptualization and statistical analysis of these notions for research design. Various procedural suggestions regarding the use of comparative frameworks are presented to assist in the development and implementation of future studies gauging the impact of worldview commitments upon societal wellbeing.
