Red Devil Or Tragic Hero? Osceola As Settler-Colonial Icon, C. S. Monaco
Red Devil Or Tragic Hero? Osceola As Settler-Colonial Icon, C. S. Monaco
C. S. Monaco
This essay explores the meaning behind America's divergent response to Osceola, one of the most noted of native American war leaders, and the importance of political party affiliation in the construction of his media iconography. Moreover, Osceola's cultural and political significance is placed within the critical context of settler-colonialism. Previous work on this Native leader has bypassed the crucial role of Whig and Democratic political operatives as well as the emergent mass media in the manufacture of a self-serving and highly skewed celebrity image. Thus an essential perspective has been missing from the historiography, a lacuna that is particularly addressed …
Are You Really Going To Eat That? Water, Power, And Bugs A La Tlaxcalteca, Jeanne Gillespie
Are You Really Going To Eat That? Water, Power, And Bugs A La Tlaxcalteca, Jeanne Gillespie

Narratives in Mesoamerica consistently used mytho-poetic data to frame their commentaries. For that reason, scholars must endeavor not only to understand the “facts” that Davies is seeking, but to also navigate the other organizing principles that frame historic narratives. It is not that these “details of fantasy” do not have significant historical value; it is that to understand these apparently fanciful components of the narrative, scholars must also understand the strategies and the rhetorical devices that the Amerindian narrators used to generate them. This study will examine an aspect of the rich and complex mytho-poetic data documenting the Battle of …
Reconstructing Race: A Discourse-Theoretical Approach To A Normative Politics Of Identity, Andrew Pierce
Reconstructing Race: A Discourse-Theoretical Approach To A Normative Politics Of Identity, Andrew Pierce
Andrew J. Pierce
This paper aims to get clear on the normative implications of the idea that race is a “social construction,” not just for political practice in non-ideal societies where racial oppression remains, but in “ideal” (presumably non-racist) societies as well. That is, I pursue the question of whether race and/or racial identity would have any legitimate place in an ideally just society, or to state it another way, whether the concept of race can be extricated from the history of racial oppression from which it arose. The position I defend is a version of what has come to be called a …

The Clinical Gaze In The Practice Of Migrant Health: Indigenous Mexican Migrants In The United States, Seth M. Holmes Phd, Md
Seth M. Holmes PhD, MD
This paper utilizes eighteen months of ethnographic and interview research undertaken in 2003 and 2004 as well as follow-up fieldwork from 2005 to 2007 to explore the sociocultural factors affecting the interactions and barriers between U.S. biomedical professionals and their unauthorized Mexican migrant patients. The participants include unauthorized indigenous Triqui migrants along a transnational circuit from the mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico, to central California, to northwest Washington State and the physicians and nurses staffing the clinics serving Triqui people in these locations. The data show that social and economic structures in health care and subtle cultural factors in biomedicine keep …
The Codex Of Tlaxcala: Indigenous Petitions And The Discourse Of Heterarchy., Jeanne Gillespie
The Codex Of Tlaxcala: Indigenous Petitions And The Discourse Of Heterarchy., Jeanne Gillespie
JEANNE GILLESPIE
As the colony of Nueva España emerged, the indigenous Tlaxcalans, who had supported Cortés in the defeat of the Mexica-Tenochca and their allies, developed detailed narratives to document their participation in the colonial endeavor. These newest and most fervent Spanish colonial subjects accompanied explorations and eventually were pressed into relocation to establish colonial settlements in areas where the indigenous population was not as supportive of the European settlements. Tlaxcalans accompanied expeditions to Central America, the Pacific coast, northward along the Gulf Coast and to the northwest into what is today the US Southwest, including the ill-fated and extremely controversial trip …

The problem-oriented medical record is the widespread, standardized format for presenting and recording information about patients, which is taught to future physicians early in their medical training. Based on our participant obser- vation of medical training, we analyze the ways in which the patient presentation operates in medical training as a disciplinary technology that manages uncertainty in the clinical decision-making process. We uncover various mechanisms at work including the construction of a coherent narrative structure in which chaotic experiences are re-organized and re-interpreted to fit neatly in a linear plot with a predictable ending, the atomization of the patient as …
Structural Vulnerability And Hierarchies Of Ethnicity And Citizenship On The Farm., Seth M. Holmes Phd, Md
Structural Vulnerability And Hierarchies Of Ethnicity And Citizenship On The Farm., Seth M. Holmes Phd, Md
Seth M. Holmes PhD, MD
Every year, the United States employs nearly two million seasonal farm laborers, approximately half of whom are migrants (Rothenberg 1998). This article utilizes one year of participant observation on a berry farm in Washington State to analyze hierarchies of ethnicity and citizenship, structural vulnerability, and health disparities in agriculture in the United States. The farm labor structure is organized along a segregated continuum from US citizen Anglo-American to US citizen Latino, undocumented mestizo Mexican to undocumented indigenous Mexican. The ethnography shows how this structure symbolically reinforces conflations of race with perceptions of civilized and modern subjects. These hierarchies produce what …

Designing, Producing And Enacting Nationalisms: Contemporary Amerindian Fashion In Canada, Cory Willmott

Today, generations after the adoption of European styles, Amerindian peoples’ everyday clothing is almost indistinguishable from that of other residents of North America. Until recently their culturally distinct clothing has been mainly reserved for ceremonial occasions such as powwows and religious rituals. This bifurcation of clothing styles and contexts parallels the dichotomy between ‘traditional’ and ‘assimilated’ Native identity that has been imposed by the dominant society. The dichotomy is a double bind: adopting ‘traditional’ identities, Native peoples are cast into a static ahistorical frame, while appearing ‘assimilated’ erases cultural distinctiveness. In both cases, Native peoples cannot effectively stake claims to …

The Question Of Genocide In The Pequot War, Joshua Erspamer Mr.
joshua Erspamer Mr.
The Pequot War is considered the defining moment where European invaders comitted genocide for the first time and also the beginning of a legacy of oppression. This paper focuses on how the modern concept of genocide has been applied to the Pequot War while the Pequot Nation regained it's federal status, during the AIM movement, and by selected historical scholars during the 1990's.
The Cherokee-Freedmen Story: What The Media Saw, Ronald Smith
The Cherokee-Freedmen Story: What The Media Saw, Ronald Smith
Ronald D Smith APR
National media and international journalists watched in March 2007, as voters in the Cherokee Nation decided issues of citizenship. Reporters looked at the same situation and often talked with the same people, but they didn’t always see the same story.
Some journalists saw the Cherokee-Freedmen story as one about race and civil rights; some saw it as being about Cherokee sovereignty and Indian identity. This content analysis investigates media reporting on the issue.
Two Polls Show Media And Government Out Of Step With The Public, Ronald Smith
Two Polls Show Media And Government Out Of Step With The Public, Ronald Smith
Ronald D Smith APR
It makes for an interesting and unusual image -- public opinion marching down the path of social progress; government and the news media on the other side, out of step with the people who make up the media-using citizenry.
The specifics of this report deal with taxation proposals in New York State, but close your eyes and you'll see the obvious parallels throughout ther country in dozens of situations in which states tell Indian tribes and nations what they should or should not do, or what the state would like to do to them.
Fundamentally, this report deals with the …

THIS PAPER IS THE CO-WINNER OF THE FRED BERGER PRIZE IN PHILOSOPHY OF LAW FOR THE 1999 AMERICAN PHILOSOPHICAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE BEST PUBLISHED PAPER IN THE PREVIOUS TWO YEARS.
The conflict between liberal legal theory and critical legal studies (CLS) is often framed as a matter of whether there is a theory of justice that the law should embody which all rational people could or must accept. In a divided society, the CLS critique of this view is overwhelming: there is no such justice that can command universal assent. But the liberal critique of CLS, that it degenerates into …
