The Chinese Fresco Painting (accession #1951.230) at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art is a problematic work. The museum registration document showed that this wall painting is thought to have been painted during the Ming dynasty, ruling from 1368 to 1644. It may depict the Goddess of Sons and Grandsons, Zisun Niangniang. However, this is unprovenanced and unresearched. In this paper, connoisseurship analysis and scientific examination of the painting are carried out to elucidate the mystery of this Chinese mural. Nazi art collecting and looting was a strong and persistent undercurrent throughout World War II. The public and private practices of Nazi officials reveal both their aesthetic tastes and obsession with establishing themselves as highly educated, cultured patrons of the arts. Although the party’s artistic preferences are hard to define, it is evident that their stance on what constituted fine art and culture was entirely illogical, inconsistent, and incongruent. The specter of fascism haunts democracies the world over, leading to valuable new research into the criminal fascistic regimes of the past, most notably Germany’s experience with Nazism. However, scholarship regarding the Third Reich often tends towards institutional and biographical portraits, leaving underexamined the deep connection between Nazism and the arts. In 1988, Gerhard Richter completed 18. Oktober 1977, the controversial fifteen-painting cycle that details the history and memory of the Red Army Faction (RAF), the homegrown left-extremist group that terrorized the Federal Republic of Germany from 1970 until 1977, carrying out a campaign of bank robberies, bombings, and kidnappings in support of its armed struggle against contemporary capitalism and the perceived threat of reemergent fascism in postwar West Germany. Richter appropriates found media and police photographs to cast the RAF and the events of the “German Autumn,” the period of intense and escalating confrontations between the RAF and the …

As a seminal artistic figure of the early Renaissance period, Michelangelo produced works of art that defined the canon of art. Through his early sculpted and painted works, the ambitions Michelangelo had for himself as an artist were evident. Not only were the works he created masterful for such a young age, but they also pushed the boundaries of existing artistic and stylistic techniques. Michelangelo used his sensibility towards the creation of sculpture, specifically the Julius II Tomb, to create figures and architectural elements in the Sistine Chapel Ceiling that reflected his vision of marble. The Reality Of Things: Mark Rothko’S Progression From Figuration To Abstraction, Madeline Nelson

Nothing, at first glance, seems a more unlikely point of departure for a discussion of Mark Rothko’s Color Field paintings than his work under the Art Students League. The two eras belong to different poles of artistic instinct: the first, dark paints thickly impastoed, raw and unfounded in the first hesitant attempt at the human figure, the other, thin washes of gossamer color in hazy geometric form. However, where these two eras coincide is where we find Rothko’s most crucial concerns as he embarked on the creation of his mature format.

In the early summer of 1907, after months of preparatory studies, Picasso completed the first version of Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. By mid-summer, he'd repainted two of the heads of the nude female forms to resemble African reliquary figures. This thesis examines this decision under the greater context of early-20th century colonialism. Why did Picasso include Africanizing elements in the Demoiselles, and to what extent can we apply the term "cultural appropriation" to his decision in modern art history?

In 1937, the Nazis curated the Entartete Kunst, which was a propagandistic exhibition created by Joseph Goebbels to discredit avant-garde art in Germany. The exhibition took place alongside another show, the pro-National Socialist Grosse Deutsche Kunstausstellung (Great German Art Exhibition). This paper is an depth look into why the Nazis hated the avant-garde and the threat that they felt it posed to their Aryan Society, the vital role it played in their overall agenda, their activities to discredit the art in the eyes of the German public, and how their plan against modernism eventually backfired.

Skilled in a variety of arts, Gian Lorenzo Bernini incorporated his knowledge of theater to perfect the Baroque concept of the bel composto, meaning the beautiful whole or the effortless and harmonious synthesis of the arts of sculpture, architecture and painting. His connections with the Catholic Church and the efforts of several popes to promote the Counter-Reformation provided commissions and thus opportunities for Bernini to develop and perfect an elevated, theatrical application of the bel composto concept in the designs of Catholic chapels in Rome. My thesis explores the philosophical and ideological divergence among the artists of the Italian Divisionism. Divisionism is a distinctive artistic phenomenon that had a short lifespan of twenty years from 1890 to 1910. Like the French Pointilism, it absorbed the influence of contemporary scientific theories on optical perception in relation to colors. Instead of blending colors in a traditional way, the artists of this style juxtaposed individual, broken strokes in primary colors to achieve the effect of maximum luminosity. Unlike the French neo-impressionists, however, their subject matter featured a strong involvement in social and political issues, idealized depiction of nature, …

This project explores the development and evolution of the suburban built environment in the United States, from the nineteenth century in the wake of the Industrial Revolution into present day. Philosophical movements and the advent of urban planning as a recognized academic discipline at the beginning of the twentieth century contributed to a focus on urban design and development as a way to combat problems within society. The Golden Proportion is the place where a line is divided in such a way that the ratio of the length of the shorter segment to the longer segment is equal to the ratio of the longer segment to the length of the whole line. It has been claimed by artists, architects, and aestheticians that the Golden Section is the most aesthetically pleasing division of a line, and that the Golden Rectangle is the most aesthetically pleasing of all rectangles. This thesis addresses Prince Sihanouk and the model of absolute monarchy in Cambodia during his ‘golden era.’ What is the legacy bequeathed to his country that emanated from his years as his country’s autocratic leader (1954-1970)? What did he leave behind? My original hypothesis was that Sihanouk was a libertine and ruthless god-king who had immense pride for his country. He fought for his people and had strong good intentions. Following World War I, Henri Matisse moved to the South of France to escape the chaotic terrain of post-war Paris. It was in the idyllic Nice where the artist would reveal a "return to naturalism" with his motif of contemplative women before an open window. Uniting portraiture, decorative interiors and landscapes in one composition, Matisse dually investigates the theme of interiority, while providing the viewer with the aesthetic delights, available for his delectation.
