A Comparison Of Robusticity Of Archaic, Woodland, And Historic Period Populations Within New York State As Based On Musculoskeletal Markers, Julie Emily Ferguson

The purpose of this project is to compare the relative robusticity between native populations in New York State from the Archaic, Woodland, and Historic time periods. Musculoskeletal markers are used to determine any similarities and differences in robusticity between ages, sexes, and time periods. Relative robusticity is also assessed in terms of upper and lower limbs to further investigate any habitual activity patterns that can be discerned between groups. It is hypothesized that the Archaic populations would be comparatively more robust than the Woodland and Historic periods. This dissertation presents a multidisciplinary means of determining the actual content (foodstuff, non-foodstuff, or lack of contents) of Classic Mayan (A.D. 250-900) vessels. Based on previous studies that have identified the residues of foodstuffs named in hieroglyphic texts (e.g. cacao), this study is designed to further investigate foodstuff residues in the elite vessels indicated by text or image to contain those residues, and the methods employed for residue characterization. Prior to studies utilizing residue analysis, the content of Classic Maya vessels largely had long been inferred largely by ethnographic analogy, associating specific vessel forms with specific uses based on ethnographic …

This study investigates the economic organization of the small hilltop sites of Moxviquil and Huitepec, in the Jovel Valley of highland Chiapas, Mexico. In this study, I examine degree to which households at these sites had the autonomy to independently produce, consume or trade the fruits of their labor, and to what degree was their production controlled and/or consumed by more powerful sociopolitical forces. In particular, I focus on the growth and prosperity of these sites during the transition from the Late Classic period (A.D. 700-1000) to the Early Postclassic period (A.D. 1000-1250), a period when the political systems, economies, …
