Sitting Here With You In The Future: Reimagining The Human Through Digital Art, Jared Z. Sloan Jan 2023

Sitting Here With You In The Future: Reimagining The Human Through Digital Art, Jared Z. Sloan

Crossings: Swarthmore Undergraduate Feminist Research Journal

This paper presents a novel construction of the Human that arises from digital art. Taking an interdisciplinary approach incorporating perspectives from queer theory, afropessimism, science and technology studies, and more, I analyze the works of three digital artists: Lucas LaRochelle, Arafa Hamadi, and Natalie Paneng. I chart the ways in which these artists negotiate borders between the physical and digital, human and non-human, and real and fantastical to challenge hegemonic Western ideas about humanity and the individual. I claim that by restricting the information available to the user in various ways, the picture of the Human that emerges from each …

Empire In-The-Round: The Tiered Stages Of Naqsh-I Jahan Square In Isfahan, Sean P. Silvia Jul 2021

Empire In-The-Round: The Tiered Stages Of Naqsh-I Jahan Square In Isfahan, Sean P. Silvia

Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal

Naqsh-i Jahan Square lies at the heart of the Safavid Empire's capital city of Isfahan, and it is a remarkable unified artistic statement that renders legible Shah 'Abbas' imperial ideology in the urban landscape. It is also a complex made up of many different buildings with theater iconography: the caravanserai, coffeehouse, maydan, and palace. Though there is much existing scholarship analyzing these buildings separately, this paper proposes a new holistic conception of these stage spaces as linked and hierarchal. The stages embody the Shah's goal of centralization by facilitating ease of movement to promote urban consolidation and they invite the …

The cathedral of Saint-Pierre in Beauvais, France, is most famous as a failure - its choir vaults came crashing down in 1284 - and only secondarily for its soaring beauty. This illustrated book represents the first serious look at the stunning collection of Gothic stained glass windows that has always dominated the experience of those who enter Beauvais Cathedral.

Ernest Meissonier: Master In His Genre, Constance Cain Hungerford, J.L. E. Meissonier Jan 1999

Ernest Meissonier: Master In His Genre, Constance Cain Hungerford, J.L. E. Meissonier

Art & Art History Faculty Works

This study documents the career of one of the most widely known French artists of the nineteenth century. The embodiment of mainstream taste, Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier was scorned by the avant-garde, but his jewellike genre paintings were highly regarded by his middle-class audience. Examining his art in detail, Constance Cain Hungerford follows Meissonier from his formation as a wood engraving designer to his virtuous production of small scale genre scenes, his larger battlefield paintings, and his several images of modern revolution and war. Also analyzed are the state administered exhibition system, which Meissonier worked to his advantage, and developments in the …

Production Practices In Medieval Stained Glass Workshops: Some Evidence In The Glencairn Museum, Michael Watt Cothren Jan 1999

Production Practices In Medieval Stained Glass Workshops: Some Evidence In The Glencairn Museum, Michael Watt Cothren

Art & Art History Faculty Works

Two examples of technical and physical evidence of early-medieval stained-glass workshop practices are examined. The examples comprise a group of 13 panels of French grisaille from various buildings, which date from the 1250s to the 1270s, and panels representing three standing bishops from the band windows in the Norman abbey church of Evron, which date from the second decade of the 14th century. All of the panels are now housed in the Glencairn Museum in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania. The first group seems to provide an example of “ghost images”—corrosive imprints resulting from vaporized deposits transferred from one piece of glass …

Fragments Of An Early Thirteenth-Century St. Peter Window From The Cathedral Of Rouen, Michael Watt Cothren Jan 1998

Fragments Of An Early Thirteenth-Century St. Peter Window From The Cathedral Of Rouen, Michael Watt Cothren

Art & Art History Faculty Works

This article introduces three fragments from a stained-glass cycle of the life of St. Peter, once part of the nave aisle glazing of the cathedral of Rouen. Although the evidence they offer is diminished by their partial preservation, when these panels are associated with a previously recognized panel depicting St. Peter in the Glencairn Museum, a narrative cycle can be documented and firmer conclusions can be drawn concerning stylistic relationships among the "Belles Verrières" of the Rouen nave aisle. The examination of these fragments from technical and physical--as well as stylistic--standpoints confirms an assessment of the early thirteenth-century stained-glass workshop …
