Review Of Herbert Blau’S Reality Principles: From The Absurd To The Virtual, Clark Lunberry Nov 2015

Review Of Herbert Blau’S Reality Principles: From The Absurd To The Virtual, Clark Lunberry

Clark Lunberry

In his most recent book of collected essays on theatre and performance, the esteemed scholar and theatre director Herbert Blau (who died on 3 May 2013 at age 87) recounts a story from his early days as a director of an actor’s lament with his rehearsed role, “I don’t feel this, I’m not feeling this at all.” To which Blau forcefully replied, “I couldn’t care less what you feel, or don’t, feelings are cheap! I only care what you think. What we’re doing here is thinking, trying to understand”. In a chapter entitled “The Emotional Memory of Directing,” Blau is …

Mining And Civilization, Fathi Habashi Jul 2015

Mining And Civilization, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

Ancient ruins or an ancient stone statue recalls the work of miners who brought the material from a quarry so that the sculptor can create a work of art. Carving of massive stone blocks and piercing tunnels in mountains are arts in which the same tools of mining are used and mining engineers are involved. Studying history of mining necessitates also the study of archaeology, art, architecture, and world history in general since it is the history of civilization. The pyramids of Egypt, the gold of Tut Ankh Amoun, the Coloseum in Rome, the Taj Mahal in Agra, and the …

Standing At The Gates Of Heaven And Hell, Julianne Henderson Jul 2015

Standing At The Gates Of Heaven And Hell, Julianne Henderson

:: Gates of Heaven and Hell ::

I am surrounded by Auguste Rodin’s angels and demons. One gets the sense that for every muscle employed to wrap them in their own embrace, there is an unattended muscle somewhere else that has resulted in a mid-motion limb stretching or groping for something or someone else that may or may not be within reach. I am in awe of the fluidity that each of them represents and immortalizes.

Some force led me to this place that houses the Gates of Hell the day after I sat before Ghiberti’s Gates of Paradise. The …

Florentine Convent As Practiced Place: Cosimo De’Medici, Fra Angelico, And The Public Library Of San Marco, Allie Terry-Fritsch Feb 2015

Florentine Convent As Practiced Place: Cosimo De’Medici, Fra Angelico, And The Public Library Of San Marco, Allie Terry-Fritsch

Allie Terry-Fritsch

By approaching the Observant Dominican convent of San Marco in Florence as a “practiced place,” this article considers the secular users of the convent’s library as mobile spectators that necessarily navigated the cloister and dormitory and, in so doing, recovers, for the first time, their embodied experience of the architectural pathway and the frescoed decoration along the way. To begin this process, the article rediscovers the original “public” for the library at San Marco and reconstructs the pathway through the convent that this secular audience once used. By considering the practice of the place, this article considers Fra Angelico’s extensive …
