Anglo-American Merchants And Stratagems For Success In Spanish Imperial Markets, 1783-1807, Linda K. Salvucci
Anglo-American Merchants And Stratagems For Success In Spanish Imperial Markets, 1783-1807, Linda K. Salvucci
History Faculty Research
When Josiah Blakeley, consul of the United States at Santiago de Cuba, wrote these lines to Secretary of State James Madison on November 1, 1801 he had recently been jailed by administrators on that island. This remarkable situation notwithstanding, his sentiments still neatly express the paradox of trade between the United States and Spanish Caribbean ports. The expanding hinterlands of New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore furnished North American merchants with ever increasing, exportable food supplies and led to fierce competition for new markets at the end of the eighteenth century. At the same time, Spain's American colonies remained chronically, often …

Railroads In Tuolumne County, California : Their Role And Importance To Specific Industries And Their Impact On County Economic Development, 1897-1917, Kyle K. Wyatt
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
During most of the nineteenth century and the early years of the twentieth numerous railroads were built throughout America. Some. grew into gigantic systems with names we recognize today; Southern Pacific, Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, Chesapeake & Ohio. Others faded into oblivion. But all, successful or not, were built to fill transportation needs.
In Tuolumne County, California, located along the Mother. Lode and stretching into the high Sierra Nevada, the first railroad reached the county in 1897. By World War I a number of rail lines had been built. Several, having served their purpose, had already been removed by …
The Nonconformists Of Leeds In The Early Victorian Era: A Study In Social Composition, Susan L. Fales
The Nonconformists Of Leeds In The Early Victorian Era: A Study In Social Composition, Susan L. Fales
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examined the Nonconformist denominational membership in the Borough of Leeds during the early Victorian era to determine the social composition of its members. The chapel goers of Old Dissent, represented by the Unitarians, Baptists, Independents, and the Society of Friends, and New Dissent, represented by the Wesleyan Methodists, Methodist New Connexion, Primitive Methodists and the Mormons were the basis for this study. The results of the occupational, residential, family, and migration analysis revealed a surprisingly high percentage of working classes (72) represented among the Dissenters. This fact flys in the face of contemporary observation and historical investigation, which …
