The Trowbridge Gang, 1842, Marty Sartin Dec 1980

The Trowbridge Gang, 1842, Marty Sartin

Honors Theses

counterfeiting is the unlawful production of any article in imitation of another, especially the imitation of money. Many states encountered problems with counterfeiters during the 1830s and 1840s. Arkansas was not without her ganges of counterfeiters who worked in the cities of Little Rock, Van Buren and Lewisburg. These gangs copied not only paper money but coins, corporation notes and bank notes.

American Public Opinion And The Japanese Question 1904-1934, Phoebe O'Connor White Oct 1980

American Public Opinion And The Japanese Question 1904-1934, Phoebe O'Connor White

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In my study of the subject “American Public Opinion and the Japanese Question,” I have taken the period from 1904 to 1974 because it represents a period in the relations between the two nations which will probably be of lasting consequence to both. During this period many questions of international importance have arisen, and the reflection of American public opinion on these events is well worth studying.

In this study of American public opinion I have not attempted to build a case either for or against Japan in the many controversies which have arisen between the two nations. The changes …

Castle Thunder : The Confederate Provost Marshal's Prison, 1862-1865, Alan Lawrence Golden Sep 1980

Castle Thunder : The Confederate Provost Marshal's Prison, 1862-1865, Alan Lawrence Golden

Master's Theses

The Civil War is, in many respects, one of the most tragic, yet fascinating periods of this nation's history. During the last one hundred years scholars have stud ied numerous aspects of this conflict in great detail. The subject of this thesis, however, has received meager attention. The focus of this study is the Provost Marshal's prison in Richmond, Virginia, called Eastern District Military Prison or, as it is more commonly known, Castle Thunder. Castle Thunder was the only prison of its kind in the South as most of its inmates were political prisoners, deserters, and criminals, rather than captured …

Charles Langlade In The French And Indian War, Paul M. Trap Aug 1980

Charles Langlade In The French And Indian War, Paul M. Trap

Masters Theses

At the time when North America was "being torn by conflict for control of the continent, Charles-Michel Mouet de Xanglade became one of the most important Indian leaders in the Old Northwest. During the French and Indian War he led parties of Indian warriors in most of the major campaigns of the war, from the first fighting at Pickawillany to the French capitulation at Montreal in I760. Xanglade's Indians were typical of most Indian war-parties, both impairing the French cause by their atrocities and inappropriate actions and providing badly needed support in crucial situations.

This paper describes Xanglade's actions during …

Printed Maps Of Utah To 1900: An Annotated Cartobibliography, Riley Moore Moffat Aug 1980

Printed Maps Of Utah To 1900: An Annotated Cartobibliography, Riley Moore Moffat

Theses and Dissertations

Old maps are valuable research tools in many fields. Finding and identifying them, however, is often difficult. This annotated cartobibliography attempts to identify all maps of Utah printed before 1900. Entries give the distinguishing features, peculiarities, inaccuracies, and a general description as well as the map's provenance and citations in other lists and bibliographies.

The maps are listed chronologically and include all maps located in research collections in Utah, and in the catalogs of the Library of Congress and the Bancroft Library. Although the first entry is dated 1777, the first map of Utah made from actual observation, earlier maps …

Ranching In Western North Dakota, 1887-1920, Scott R. Neevel Aug 1980

Ranching In Western North Dakota, 1887-1920, Scott R. Neevel

Theses and Dissertations

Several historians have dealt with the topic of ranching in the American West, but generally they have presented a broad overview of what took place over the entire western United States. Those who have dealt with ranching in western North Dakota generally have covered the early 1880s, but they have used the calamitous winter of 1886-1887 as a stopping point.

The period from 1887 on through the first two decades of the twentieth century was an era marked by recovery of the stock industry, the change from open to closed range, and the change from the old open range methods …

The Swamp Land Act In Oregon, 1870-1895, Richard Mark Pintarich Jul 1980

The Swamp Land Act In Oregon, 1870-1895, Richard Mark Pintarich

Dissertations and Theses

The Swamp Land Act of 1849, originally intended to give the state of Louisiana the unproductive swamplands within its borders and use the proceeds to construct the drains and levees necessary to reclaim these lands, was extended to Oregon in 1860. Oregon did not act on the matter until 1870, but once begun, it became a prolific source of political corruption, fiscal irresponsibility, fraud, and land speculation and monopolization. Even though the physiography of Oregon was much different than the states in the Mississippi Valley, millions of acres of "swampland" were filed upon and the state sold hundreds of thousands …

A Development Plan For The Museums At Union Station In Ogden, Utah, Elizabeth A. M. Griffith May 1980

A Development Plan For The Museums At Union Station In Ogden, Utah, Elizabeth A. M. Griffith

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study is concerned with a comparison of the contemporary to the traditional museum. It analyzes the evolution of roles for museums and considers the changing nature of their support. Using a broad survey of literature related to museums, considerable personal experience and extensive visits and interviews with other museums, it develops the thesis that today's successful museum depends upon a diverse resource and program base. An application of this hypothesis is then made to the museums at Union Station in Ogden, Utah. The product of the study is intended to be a working plan for museum development at Union …

This thesis focuses on the period 1820-1850, the heyday of revivalism and revival songs. The first section describes the background, nature and dynamics of 19th-century revivals in order to provide the historical setting and theological climate for the emergence of revival songs. The second section examines the origins, development and use of revival music in general. Two song collections are emphasized: the Christian Lyre compiled by Joshua Leavitt and Spiritual Songs for Social Worship by Thomas Hastings and Lowell Mason.

Thomas Cromwell : The Force Behind The Henrician Reformation, Stephanie Annette Finley Apr 1980

Thomas Cromwell : The Force Behind The Henrician Reformation, Stephanie Annette Finley

Honors Theses

From the Henrician Reformation to the middle of the twentieth century, Thomas Cromwell, the man who made the Reformation possible by carefully guiding national legislation through Parliament, has been termed a "black legend'' due to his ruthless ability to enact reforms at all costs. The asunder English Church fissioned from international Christendom with the King as supreme head was a price too high for some Englishmen and ineluctably doomed Cromwell's life and memory. However, England emerged from the Reformation a more efficiently organized nation ruled by the King-in-Parliament, and it can not be denied that the great achievements of Henry …

The Legal Confrontations Between King James Of England And Chief Justice Sir Edward Coke, Howard B. Blackmon Apr 1980

The Legal Confrontations Between King James Of England And Chief Justice Sir Edward Coke, Howard B. Blackmon

Honors Theses

James I, during his reign as King of England, sought to extend the pwoer and authority of the English monarchy. Firmly believing in divine right absolute monarchy, he desired to subordinate the Parliament and the common law courts to the Crown. James encountered fierce opposition in his attempts to extend royal privileges and prerogatives. In the contest between James and the common law courts, Sir Edward Coke arose as the chief defender of the supremacy of common law and the independence of the common law courts.

Francesco Guicciardini And Philippe De Commynes: Tradition And Innovation In Early Modern Historiography, Alex H. Levine Jan 1980

Francesco Guicciardini And Philippe De Commynes: Tradition And Innovation In Early Modern Historiography, Alex H. Levine

Honors Papers

This paper will assess each author by investigating the historiographical tradition out of which he emerged. With this in mind, we will then consider Guicciardini and Commynes in the light of their continuities with and departures from the Florentine and French traditions. Finally, the two historians will be compared in terms of their perceptions of causation and their schemes of explanation in their accounts of the first French invasion of Italy in 1494.

Julius Caesar In Medieval France: The Textual Sources And Iconography Of The Faits Des Romains, Mark M. Nelson Jan 1980

Julius Caesar In Medieval France: The Textual Sources And Iconography Of The Faits Des Romains, Mark M. Nelson

Honors Papers

The Julius Caesar of Shakespeare's day was a figure who believed that fame transcended mortality. Long after Caesar the man was dead, Caesar the legend lived on. It was a legend which in many ways was an analogue of the man. The legend maintained all of Caesar's stubborn persistence, and to some extent his power, his influence, and his ability to provoke controversy. This legend was borne across the Middle Ages by a mere handful of literary manuscripts. Just as the historical Caesar had survived the many pitfalls of his career, these manuscripts somehow escaped the numerous fates that could …

Patterns Of Disenchantment: The Position Of The Liberal And Labour Party: 1910-1914, Jonathan Broder Jan 1980

Patterns Of Disenchantment: The Position Of The Liberal And Labour Party: 1910-1914, Jonathan Broder

Honors Papers

The first chapter deals with the underlying trends of the period. At first the material conditions of the first decade of the twentieth century will be assessed. What was the economic condition of the people? How was this position colored by the levels of relative deprivation, education, and leisure time that existed in Edwardian England? Once these basic areas have been examined, chapter one goes on to trace the development known as the "New Unionism" which began taking root after 1889 and really found its place after 1910. What was the nature of this unionism and what made it different …

Degaulle, The European: 1961-1966, Leonard V. Smith Jan 1980

Degaulle, The European: 1961-1966, Leonard V. Smith

Honors Papers

This is the purpose of this thesis: to study the ways in which DeGaulle can be thought or as a European, rather than merely a French nationalist, and to examine his vision of Europe. The period selected for investigation extends from the European summit conference of February 1961, to the resolution of the agricultural crisis in May of 1966. Chapter I examines the ideological foundations behind this vision of Europe discussing DeGaulle's political attitude, and his views of the State, the failings of supranationalism, and Europe's relationship to the superpowers. Chapter II will show what happened when DeGaulle tried to …

Letters Of Stanley E. Kerr: Volunteer Work With The "Near East Relief" Among Armenians In Marash, 1919-1920, Susan Kerr Van De Ven Jan 1980

Letters Of Stanley E. Kerr: Volunteer Work With The "Near East Relief" Among Armenians In Marash, 1919-1920, Susan Kerr Van De Ven

Honors Papers

As the central focus of my senior thesis at Oberlin College, I have chosen to edit Stanley Kerr's correspondence of 1919-1920. This correspondence of nearly 300 pages is a detailed observation by a young American relief worker of the aftermath of the Armenian genocide and deportations in Allied occupied post-war Turkey. My purpose is not to provide a commentary on the correspondence. Rather, it is to reproduce the letters in their original form in order present new primary material for historians. I also envision a possible M.A. or Ph.D. thesis using this collection. Therefore, I feel that I have only …

Hulett C. Smith And His Pursuit Of Excellence, Daniel E. Wright Jan 1980

Hulett C. Smith And His Pursuit Of Excellence, Daniel E. Wright

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this thesis is to trace the early life and political career of West Virginia's twenty-seventh governor, Hulett Carlson Smith. Moreover, it proposes to portray the unqualified commitment of the Smith administration to the field of education. Many of today's educational improvements and innovative educational programs had their beginnings in the Smith administration. It can be concluded that the general public as well as many educators have forgotten the tremendous contributions to this vital need of society by the Smith administration. The time has come when Hulett C. Smith should be given due credit to his innovative and …

The purpose of this study is to examine the Root Mission to Russia from it conception to its final report and to evaluate the effectiveness of each member individually as well as that of the Mission as a whole. Further, major actions and responses of the Wilson Administration and other American officials have been considered where these actions have a direct bearing on the effectiveness of the Root Mission. This study also provides a narrative account of the constructive work of the commission and attempts to highlight those experiences which might well have had a significant impact on the Mission's …

The Status In 1980 Of The Toulmin Model Of Argument In The Area Of Speech Communication, Jeffrey Robert Sweeney Jan 1980

The Status In 1980 Of The Toulmin Model Of Argument In The Area Of Speech Communication, Jeffrey Robert Sweeney

Dissertations and Theses

In 1958 Stephen E. Toulmin wrote of inadequacies of formal logic and proposed a new field-dependent approach to the analysis of arguments. Despite a generally negative response to his proposal from formal logicians, Toulmin's model for the laying out of arguments for analysis was subsequently appropriated by several speech communication textbook writers. In some textbooks, the Toulmin model has become successor to the syllogism as the paradigm of logical argument. Yet, perhaps due to their seemingly uncritical acceptance of Toulmin's approach there appears to be serious disagreement and confusion among speech communication professionals about the nature and applications of the …

Organization And Doctrine In The Continental Army, 1774 To 1784, Robert K. Wright

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This dissertation traces the development of organizational forms and tactical doctrine in the Continental Army, the regular United States armed force in the War of American Independence. It investigates political, ideological, technological, economic, and strategic influences on the decisions made by the Continental Congress, George Washington, and other Army leaders. In the process it places the Continentals in a context of eighteenth century military science.;Individual colonies raised the first troops by drawing on their experiences in earlier wars, especially on the example of short-term Provincials supplementing the militia. Congress assumed national responsibility for the war on 14 June 1775 by …
