Bury St. Edmunds: A Reassessment Of Town-Abbey Relations, Michael Graham
Bury St. Edmunds: A Reassessment Of Town-Abbey Relations, Michael Graham
Michael F. Graham
These essays explore various topics in European history ranging from a study of the medieval Abbey of Bury St. Edmunds to an essay on the issue of the restoration of the Kaiser prior to Hitler's assumption of power. Enno Kraeh contributes a personal narrative of philosophical journey through the study of history. Three of the essays address literary and cultural themes dealing with German theatre politics, belle epoque opera, and Polish drama. The volume has strong representation on Austrian history, including essays on diplomacy, the Anschluss, and Austrian anti-Semitism.

From Choir Book To Scrap Book: The Initials In Hmml Bean Ms 3, Elizabeth Teviotdale

A consideration of the origin of a group of cuttings contained in a 19th-century album (Collegeville, Hill Monastic Manuscript Library, Bean MS 3), with an analysis is the relationship of the initials' figural subjects to the texts they introduced. The cuttings, a series of historiated and decorated initials, were taken from one of a pair of choir books made in northern France or Flanders for a house of Cistercian nuns in the 13th century.
The Uses Of Reform: 'Godly Discipline' And Popular Behavior In Scotland And Beyond, 1560-1610, Michael Graham
The Uses Of Reform: 'Godly Discipline' And Popular Behavior In Scotland And Beyond, 1560-1610, Michael Graham
Michael F. Graham
The "Uses of Reform" is a study of the Reformation as a movement for behavioral reform, concentrating on Scotland during the first fifty years (1560-1610) of its Reformation as a primary example. The opening chapters trace the development of "Godly Discipline" as part of the European-wide reform movement. Graham follows this general narrative with a study of the creation and implementation of a disciplinary system in Scotland. Finally, he compares disciplinary practices in the Scottish Church with those of the Huguenot communities of France. Looking closely at the proceedings of church courts which enforced regulations concerning behavior, Graham paints a …

75th Anniversary Of The Foundation Of The Communist Party Of Australia, 1995, Rowan Cahill
Rowan Cahill
The 75th Anniversay of the foundation of the Communist Party of Australia (CPA) was commemorated in Sydney in 1995. Although the Party voluntarily wound up in 1991, its impact and legacy on the nation was, and is, an ongoing subject of scholarly interest and debate. This article is Cahill's report of the commemoration event, and his ruminations on the significance of the Party on Australia's history and culture.

The Localism Of The County Feast In Late-Stuart Political Culture, Newton E. Key

On 29 June 1678, Huntingdonshire natives residing in or visiting London had the opportunityto witness a glittering entertainment, The Huntington Divertisement, or, an Enterlude For the Generall Entertainment at the County-Feast, held at Merchant-Taylors Hall. On 27 March 1690, Yorkshire natives, also feasting in Merchant Tailors Hall, were treated to a triumphant song by Thomas D'Urfey and Henry Purcell. These elaborate pieces, presented a dozen years apart and admittedly unrepresentative of the sermons, processions, and huzzas that graced usual natives feasts, are nonetheless worth analyzing for the issues and rhetoric that the artists and their patrons thought relevant. By examining …
"Peace Is Not The Absence Of War But The Presence Of Justice": The National Council Of Churches' Reaction And Response To The Vietnam War, 1965-1972, Jill Gill
Jill K. Gill
This dissertation examines responses of the National Council of Churches to moral, religious, political and socio-cultural issues surrounding American involvement in Vietnam 1965-1972. It does so by focusing upon NCC views of peace and justice as they were first developed within a process of cultural communication among ecumenical leaders in the NCC and constituent denominations; it then examines how these were aimed at persuading its denominational membership, grassroots Christians, and the government to a view of justice that the NCC believed would ensure domestic and international peace. Historical and ethnographic methods were used to research communication within the NCC, and …

Examines the provenance and dissemination of a multivolume antiphonary produced for the Cistercian nunnery near Cambrai. The MS is presently dispersed through several collections. In 1983 the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, purchased from the German art collectors Peter and Irene Ludwig 19 leaves and four cuttings from the MS (MS Ludwig VI 5). In 1992, the Museum acquired an additional 81 leaves (MS 44). One leaf is kept at the Cleveland Museum of Art (inv. no. 85.83), and cuttings are at the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm (B 1730-32) and in a private collection in Collegeville, Minnesota (Hill Monastic Manuscript …
