This collection of Revella E. Hughes papers consists of photo reproductions of the pages of her press book pertaining to her career in New York and on tour. Original pressbook located in the Moorland-Springarn Research Center, Howard University. Later accession includes holograph arrangements for the organ; research papers written while a graduate student at Northwestern University, where Dr. Hughes earned a Masters of Music degree in 1942. Newspaper clippings comprise the bulk of the collection. Also included are programs and announcements of concerts, recitals, and other musical events in which Miss Hughes participated. Papers consist primarily of diaries, newspaper clippings, correspondence, genealogies and photographs of five families: the Glanville-Carter families of St. Louis, Mo.; the Whittakers of Preble County, Ohio; Dorothy Whittaker Atkins of Huntington, West Virginia.; and the Heacocks of Bucks County, Penna.

A significant part of the collection are the diaries of Annie Heacock, a teacher at the Penn School for freed slaves in Beaufort, South Carolina, 1864-1869. Other diaries include the Civil War diary of John Whittaker, a surgeon in the 81st Ohio Volunteer Infantry.

The Nancy Murray Mann papers consist of correspondences, speeches in various paper formats, newspaper clippings, government publications, photographs, copies of Mann’s passport, land deeds, and research notes from Ben Riley, a Marshall University graduate student from 1983-1985. The focus of the collection primarily covers Mann’s political and social activities, particularly her political involvement during the 1928 presidential campaign for Herbert Hoover and her subsequent work during his administration. Several of her letters are addressed to President Hoover; however almost of the responses come from his secretary Lawrence Richey. This collection is composed of two pages entitled, “How many ancestors have you?” and contains a list of ancestors (one for each generation and when they were born or died), what rulers in England ruled while each ancestor lived, and how many ancestors you would have each generation for twenty-four generations. The pages were found in William S. Appleton’s “Memorials of the Cranes of Chilton” published in Cambridge in 1868. The pages are undated, and the date is approximated based on the book the pages were found in.

This collection is composed of two letters addressed to Naaman Jackson. The one from W. H. T. Squires, author of “Land of Decision”, in 1932, discusses Jackson’s purchase of “Land of Decision”. The 1942 letter is from the Vice President of the Commercial Credit Company, Inc., Commercial Bankers in Baltimore, Maryland, and discusses new loan programs created as a result of World War II.

This collection consists of correspondence between Okey L. Patteson (governor of West Virginia) and Lawrence B. Gang during 1951 regarding the proposed location of West Virginia’s first medical school. Lawrence B. Gang, a leading member of the Cabell County Medical Society, advocated for Huntington and his correspondence features reports and attached supporting his stance. Also included in the collection is a final report entitled, “Report by Okey L. Patteson Concerning the Location of the Medical School for Doctors, Dentists, and Nurses in the State of West Virginia”, with the conclusion of the report being that Morgantown was the most suitable …
