This paper is an attempt to understand the hearing of Dr. Julius Robert Oppenheimer in the light of the American state of mind. In doing so, I have considered only those events which helped to form that state of mind, or those persons who participated in the hearings. For this reason a great deal of material has not been included in the paper. I will not consider World War II nor the period following, except insofar as it is relevant to the hearing.
