Folk Arts And The Maine Arts Commission, Edward D. Ives Apr 1989

Folk Arts And The Maine Arts Commission, Edward D. Ives

Dr. Edward D. Ives Papers

Just as I believe, as an oral historian, that there is no such thing as oral history, only history, I also believe as a folklorist that there is no such thing as folk art as an entity distinct from other kinds of art, say "primitive" or "high" art. There is only art, the aesthetic response, the shaping of the world experienced into meaningful and apposite forms that can be shared with others. The creation and enjoyment of what we call art is fundamental to being human; it is not limited to any one social class or community but, as my …

Maine Privateers During The Revolutionary War, Charles E. Claghorn Apr 1989

Maine Privateers During The Revolutionary War, Charles E. Claghorn

Maine History

Historians have neglected the history of naval exploits during the American Revolution. Unimpeded by the American privateer vessels and the Continental and state navies, Britain would have achieved a strangle-hold on the colonies and the Americans would not have obtained their independence. There are no records in the Maine State Archives at Augusta regarding the privateersmen of the American Revolution; the researcher must examine those at the Massachusetts Archives at Columbia Point, Boston. This author, after researching several books, has been able to locate fifty-two privateer vessels and/or naval officers from Maine, which are listed here.

Letter Of Response From The Chancellor's Office To A Citizen Expressing Concern About "National Condom Week" Observances, Kent A. Price Mar 1989

Letter Of Response From The Chancellor's Office To A Citizen Expressing Concern About "National Condom Week" Observances, Kent A. Price

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

We must admit that times have changed, though not so much in the morals and personal standards of our students. Both research and common sense tell us that the standards of behavior set by parents for their children are not eroded by college life or other influences of the larger society. It's true, however, that today's students are much less embarrassed or otherwise restrained about discussing the once-unmentionable. Some may applaud this new openness and some may wince at it, but there's not much that university administrators can do to influence it.
