In this lesson, students will examine the relationship between gender roles and Confucian principles in pre-modern China by considering the extent to which the Mulan legend is compatible with the Confucian concept of filial piety. Students will read and discuss texts on filial piety by Confucian scholars, as well as three different works of Chinese literature based on the Mulan legend from three distinct time periods.

The scenario:
About 30 years ago, a group of archeologists discovered excerpts of texts written by people who had witnessed the Crusades, buried inside the tomb of a scholar who died in the late 13th century. The archaeologists hired Bernard, an archivist at the Museum of the Middle Ages, to analyze the texts and determine just exactly what these documents were and who wrote them. Unfortunately, before Bernard had finished his task, aliens had abducted Bernard and the team of archeologists who discovered the documents. No one heard from any of these people again, and the discovery was forgotten …

The author addresses the contemporary (1970s) loss of confidence, and interest, in history as a subject amongst Australian secondary school students and educational administrators. He mounts a defence of the teaching of the subject in schools, and argues for its complexities. Strategies to increase the appeal of the subject and its perceived relevance are suggested.
