This article examines aspects of the connection between radical history and labour history in Australia. It begins by resurrecting the forgotten history work by intellectuals in the labour movement from the 1880s to the 1950s, and the conservative attacks on radical history in the 50s and 60s. It continues by highlighting the early attempts to keep this radical tradition alive among labour historians, and concludes by criticising Robin Gollan's failure to distinguish popular democracy from the democratic possibilities of representative government.

Political Will, Local Union Transformation, And The Organizing Imperative, Bill Fletcher, Richard Hurd
Richard W Hurd
[Excerpt] As part of its ongoing commitment, SEIU has devoted increasing attention to the challenge of getting local unions to embrace organizing and to allocate sufficient resources to the task. In this context, the unions 1992 national convention adopted two key resolutions: one to affirm the centrality of organizing, the second to assist leadership development with targeted educational programs. In the months following the convention, a discussion unfolded among national staff regarding appropriate steps required to assist local union leaders committed to change. Although internal organizing and initiatives to develop leadership skills among women and people of color were encouraged, …

This analysis of the First Exhibition of Italian Soldier Artists of 1942 reveals the Italian Fascist conception of the role of the fi ne arts in the mobilization for war. The exhibition, held fi rst in Rome and then displayed throughout Axis-occupied Europe, introduced the fi gure of the «soldier-artist». For the exhibition’s organizers, the paintings, drawings, and sculpture of this fi nal Fascist era art exhibition argued for Fascism’s unique ability to combine power and spirituality in its pursuit of global expansion. Representing shifts in Fascist cultural production brought on by the Second World War and highlighting the central …

Middle Passages And Forced Migrations: Liberated Africans In Nineteenth-Century Us Camps And Ships, Sharla Fett
Sharla Fett
Between 1858 and 1860, Africans liberated by the US Navy from four slave ships near the Cuban coast were detained in Federal custody before being transported for resettlement in Liberia. This article draws on the concept of 'middle passage' and 'forced migration' to explore the conditions under which the US government seized, detained, and transported Africans rescued from illegal trafficking. Looking at slave trade suppression through the lens of forced migration rather than legal process not only illuminates the traumatic aftermath of the original Middle Passage but also connects the voyages of liberated African shipmates to a broader history of …

The Choctaw, John Bowes
John P. Bowes
1699, an expedition of Frenchmen encountered American Indians in the lower Mississippi Valley who referred to themselves as Choctaw. As the settlers expanded throughout America, the Choctaw developed a relationship with and adapted to the demands of these newfound neighbors. The Choctaw examines the history of these Native Americans, beginning with the Choctaw Confederacy, and provides insights into how the Choctaw survived as individuals and sovereign tribes in the aftermath of the removal policy of the 19th century. Today, three federally recognized tribes of Choctaw have a combined membership of nearly 200,000. This new title discusses the struggles and successes …

Boundaries—physical, political, social, religious, and cultural—were a key feature of life in medieval and early modern Poland, and this volume focuses on the ways in which these boundaries were respected, crossed, or otherwise negotiated. It throws new light on the contacts between Jews and Poles, including the vexed question of conversion and the tensions it aroused. The collected articles also discuss relations between the various elements of Jewish society—the wealthy and the poor, the educated and the uneducated, and the religious and the lay elites, considering too contacts between Jews in Poland and those in Germany and elsewhere. Classic studies …

Darwinian Controversies: An Historiographical Recounting, David Depew

This essay reviews key controversies in the history of the Darwinian research tradition: the Wilberforce-Huxley debate in 1860, early twentieth-century debates about the heritability of acquired characteristics and the consistency of Mendelian genetics with natural selection; the 1925 Scopes trial about teaching evolution; tensions about race, culture, and eugenics at the 1959 centenary celebration Darwin’s Origin of Species; adaptationism and its critics in the Sociobiology debate of 1970s and, more recently, Evolutionary Psychology; and current disputes about Intelligent Design. These controversies, I argue, are etched into public memory because they occur at the emotionally charged boundaries between public-political, technical-scientific, and …
