From Tele- To Online Courses: Transforming Hist 132, Torie Wynn

Wichita State University’s History Department and Instructional Technology and Design (IDT) office teamed up to eliminate the HIST 132 telecourse and replace it with an online course. This presentation will discuss stages of the transformation, including: Inception and Barriers, Design & Development (using theories from Green Light Design and the LEARN Model and adopting an OpenStax OER textbook), Delivery, and Challenges and Changes. IDT will provide a brief tour of the course shell and suggest ways in which a model like this may work at your university.

3D modeling technology is a great way to approach a broad range of educational pedagogies. Participants learned how to integrate 3D technology into your classroom. This presentation focused on the pedagogical applications of 3D printing and design in the classroom that we have implemented with chemistry, art and environmental studies faculty and students. During this intensive workshop participants learned how 3D printing and design can be used as a tool for creative problem solving.

Exploring Argumentation, Objectivity, And Bias: The Case Of Mathematical Infinity, Ami Mamolo

This paper presents an overview of several years of my research into individuals’ reasoning, argumentation, and bias when addressing problems, scenarios, and symbols related to mathematical infinity. There is a long history of debate around what constitutes “objective truth” in the realm of mathematical infinity, dating back to ancient Greece (e.g., Dubinsky et al., 2005). Modes of argumentation, hindrances, and intuitions have been largely consistent over the years and across levels of expertise (e.g., Brown et al., 2010; Fischbein et al., 1979, Tsamir, 1999). This presentation examines some theories of learning at the tertiary level of education, and tests them in a research activity involving games and learning/knowledge. Two Intermediate Spanish classes are engaged in preliminary research to measure the effectiveness of a simple game (hangman) and technology (Responseware/clickers) as practice and review tools versus traditional methods; in formative assessment.

The presentation will consist of reporting on the Quantitative results focusing on the impact of using games in learning on students in the digital age. Student attitudes based on a qualitative survey administered to the students involved will be included in the report.

Today’s classroom demands a different style of engagement and assessment, primarily due to the changing nature of today’s learners. In fact, according to Liz Dwyer in “How Gaming is Changing the Classroom,” by the time students are age 21, they will have participated in over 10,000 hours of video gaming. The Blackboard course management system includes the tool "statistics tracking." An instructor can use this tool to generate a report that "displays the summary of usage for that content item and [the students] enrolled in the course. The access date, hour and day of the week are all reported for the selected item and [students]." In this case study the researcher will correlate aggregate data about students' visits to numerous content items in a course and their final grade in the course.
