De La Littérature Beur À La Littérature De Banlieue : Un Changement De Paradigme, Mireille Le Breton
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
This article traces the history of “beur” literature and shows the evolution of the literary production emerging from the “banlieues”. Mapping out the itineraries of these two literary trends, the article highlights both the genesis and the thematic and æsthetical articulations of Beur and Banlieue literatures. This article therefore foregrounds a paradigm shift, refl ected in the sensibility of a new wave of novelists.

This project focuses on American prison writings from the late 1990s to the 2000s. Much has been written about American prison intellectuals such as Malcolm X, George Jackson, Eldridge Cleaver, and Angela Davis, who wrote as active participants in black and brown freedom movements in the United States. However the new prison literature that has emerged over the past two decades through higher education programs within prisons has received little to no attention. The secular world of literature is saturated with books sending adolescents a host of mixed signals. Contemporary young readers would benefit from literature that in some way reflects biblical truth and conveys a message that glorifies God. Such notions led to the writing of a young adult fantasy novel that introduces themes and plots that do not conflict with a Christian worldview. The protagonist does not simply react to situations around her, but is driven by specific desires that are not so easily obtained. This article takes up Rita Felski’s recent call to modernists to explore how Bruno Latour’s latest work on actor-network theory might be adapted for literary studies. It examines two accounts of World War I soldiers who (allegedly) return from the dead in material form: Virginia Woolf’s fictional account of Septimus Smith, who is convinced his friend Evans has come back from the dead, and Oliver Lodge’s best-selling memoir, Raymond, or Life and Death, which recounts in detail how Lodge believed his dead son sent messages to the family to assure them of his continued material existence. This thesis is a major component towards a completed short-story cycle. The author’s work uses a multi-faceted aspect of storytelling by employing its many characters and isolated chapters in a mosaic form. All stories operate independently while simultaneously linking together through familiar characters and setting. Every story involves characters who reside on the same suburban cul-de-sac, which forces them to interact with each other and influencing their lives. By having these characters return, sometimes by a brief presence only and other times by mention of their name, creates a concrete social atmosphere.
