"Women and War: Power Play from Lysistrata to the Present" is a three-fold project intent on analyzing the role of women in war and comedy. The intentions are: demonstrating how Aristophanes’ famed comedy, Lysistrata, was a subversive text for its time, as it presented a challenge to men’s authority that otherwise remained unchallenged, creating a modernized retelling of Lysistrata, which she holds would still be a subversive text, because men still have nearly absolute authority in war, and finally, analyzing the comedic nature of Lysistrata in a modern text; namely, why women’s choices constitute a comedy, and the comedic potential …

In this thesis, I explore Latino masculinities and contest their uniformity through transforming an oral history conducted with my father into a collection of short stories. Following storytelling traditions of Latino/Mexican culture, I converted an oral history interviews with my dad into a collection of short stories. From these short stories I extracted themes relating to the micro and macro manifestations of gender policing. Drawing from Judith Butler's Theory of performativity and Gloria Anzaldua's theory of Borderland identities, I rethink masculinity and offer Jose Esteban Munoz's theory of disidentification. Failed Heroes: Hypermasculinity In The Contemporary American Novel, Josef D. Benson

My study highlights a link of U.S. American hypermasculinity running through Cormac McCarthy's two novels Blood Meridian (1985) and All the Pretty Horses (1992), Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon (1977), and James Baldwin's Another Country (1960). My literary interpretations of these texts suggest that U.S. American hypermasculine man originated in the American frontier and transformed into a definition of hegemonic masculinity embraced by many southern rural American men. The purpose of this study is to expose the strategies through which extreme sports constitute gender through exaggeration, parody, queering, resistance, and transcendence of normative gendered binaries. I interrogate how extreme sports operate on the margins of sport, gender, media, and lived experience to better understand the processes and performances that retain, reinforce, and resist our notions of normative gender, bodies, and sexuality. Starting with the claim that performance is constitutive of gender and culture, I will focus on how extreme sporting performances create significant commentaries on mainstream assumptions surrounding sporting gender, sexuality, and corporeality.

"Chappelle's Show" is a sketch comedy series that ran from 2003-2004 and that was created by and starred comedian Dave Chappelle. Chappelle focused on the issues of racism and race as gendered and as a social construction throughout the show's two full seasons. Using content analysis, my research highlights race and masculinity as a social construction within the context of "Chappelle's Show" by focusing on specific sketches within the series that play on issues of race and gender. This paper addresses gender, nation and sacrifice as central elements in Lituma en los Andes (1993), a novel published by Mario Vargas Llosa after he ran unsuccessfully for the Peruvian presidency. The book presents a number of masculine models that are either inadequate, romanticized or brutal and sets them against a backdrop of a Peru deep in the economic and physical violence of war against the Maoist guerrillas of Sendero Luminoso, a Peru forced to live in a “superstitious and obscurantist cultural fog” because of its indigenous past.
