Perinatal depression (PND) is a global mood disorder affecting women transitioning into parenthood and is closely related to extensive psychosocial and financial consequences for the family. Ten to twenty percent of new mothers in the US are affected by PND in the year after giving birth. The problem identified for this Doctor of Nursing Practice project was the need for staff education on knowledge of and screening for PND in the obstetrical clinic for which the project was developed in a southeastern state of the US. Men are underrepresented among nursing faculty, providing few role models for male students who might benefit from interaction with male faculty. Male nursing faculty may face barriers similar to those faced by women in male-dominated professions. Yet, there has been no research on the role that education plays in dairy farm women's primary, on-farm identity development and how farm women's identities develop. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine dairy farm women's perceptions of previous learning (education) and its influence on their primary, on-farm identity development. Working mothers who are school leaders face challenges as they attempt to manage competing time demands and personal and professional responsibilities. A need exists for existing school leaders, as well as women aspiring to school leadership, to understand the coping strategies used by mothers who are also school principals.
