One of Japan's most important modern poets, Tada Chimako (1930-2003) gained prominence in her native country for her sensual, surreal poetry, and fantastic imagery. Although Tada's writing is an essential part of postwar Japanese poetry, her use of themes and motifs from European, Near Eastern, and Mediterranean history, mythology, and literature, as well as her sensitive explorations of women's inner lives make her very much a poet of the world. “The Necessity Of Reading And Being Read”: Barbara Johnson And The Literary Politics Of Narcissism, Samuel Solomon

This article traces some of the crossings of the literary, political, moral, and epistemological valences of “narcissism” in the work of literary critic Barbara Johnson, exploring how Johnson implicitly works within and against the view, as expounded by the Practical Criticism and others, of “morality” as a conduit between literature and politics. In contrast, Johnson works to read the differences within moral and epistemological schemas, betraying the pretenses of any moral “stance” without evading the necessity of holding political positions. The author follows Johnson's writings on Ovid, Heinz Kohut, and Nella Larsen, tracing the ways in which she articulates the …

Inside Out: Pregnant Actresses Playing Nonpregnant Characters, a video montage by artist Liz Linden, was originally exhibited in combination with the video Outside In : Fictional Commercials for Real Products at Art in General in New York in Hay 2009. Both videos use appropriated television clips to point to the formal and ideological mechanisms ~that structure our relationship to materials and content that we are confronted with on an almost daily basis, but which are often overlooked or dismissed as benign or banal. The Stratford Shakespeare Festival is notoriously risk-averse, creating quality "classical" theatre without rocking any audience worlds. Or is it? This paper re-examines the history of "risk" at Stratford and explores two key productions directed by Peter Hinton at the Festival. I conclude that, perhaps, risk-taking directors and a "conservative" acting company serve the work very well indeed.

Factors Behind Hiv Testing Practices Among Canadian Aboriginal Peoples Living Off-Reserve, Treena Orchard, C. Mcinnes, K. Fernandes, M. Clement, M. Gilbert, V. Lima, J. Montaner, R. Hogg

The objective of this study was to examine factors associated with HIV testing among Aboriginal peoples in Canada who live off-reserve. Data were drawn for individuals aged 15–44 from the Aboriginal Peoples Survey (2001), which represents a weighed sample of 520,493 Aboriginal men and women living off-reserve. Bivariable analysis and logistic regression were used to identify factors associated with individuals who had received an HIV test within the past year. In adjusted multivariable analysis, female gender, younger age, unemployment, contact with a family doctor or traditional healer within the past year, and “good” or “fair/poor” self-rated health increased the odds …

Douching is a common practice among certain groups of women and MSM, and it is conducted for the purpose of cleanliness as part of bodily hygiene maintenance. Although there has been considerable research about female vaginal douching, understandings of rectal douching (RD) for MSM are limited. In the epidemiological and medical literature, RD is presented as a behaviour that removes beneficial bacteria and the surface epithelium layer of the colon, which can, potentially, increase the risk of HIV transmission in MSM. The paucity of research on male douching practices is curious given the primacy of anal sex in HIV prevention …
