Swiss American Historical Society Review

When during my eight-year stay in England4 1 inquired about the essential quality of the North American Provinces, thoroughly and in detail, at opportunities occurring then and now at safe and trustworthy places, nothing would have been less permitted into my mind's consideration than handing over such report, albeit a truthful one , to the public print. At that time I rather merely thought to satisfy my constantly growing curiosity through such faithful compilation, though si multaneously *(4)* also offering it serviceably to one or the other good friend, whose desire might also …

Golo Mann: A Literary Historian, Axel Fair-Schulz Feb 2010

Golo Mann: A Literary Historian, Axel Fair-Schulz

Swiss American Historical Society Review

T he German Postal system honored the 100th anniversary of Golo Mann's birth in 2009 with a new stamp, which displayed his face with the caption Literarischer Historiker, meaning literary historian. This apt description captures much about the essence of his thinking and work as a historian, as he was a uniquely gifted writer and thus bridged the gap between scholarly historical research and thoughtfully composed literature. In addition to Germany, Switzerland also lays claim to Golo Mann , as he had lived there for many years after returning from American :xile, when Nazi Germany was finally defeated by the …

Book Review: Lenin In Zurich, Axel Fair-Schulz, Katherine French

Swiss American Historical Society Review

The recent death of Alexander Solzhenitsyn on August 3rd of this year might prompt a fresh look at that writer's oeuvre. While Solzhenitsyn is mainly associated with well known works, such as One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich and The Gulag Archipelago, one should not neglect his less widely known books. Among those is his Lenin in Zurich. This volume should be of particular interest to readers engaged with all things Swiss, given its overt subject matter. One learns much about Switzerland in the early years of the last century as a major locus for Russian emigres. Solzhenitsyn …

From Escholzmatt, Canton Lucerne, To Chicago, Illinois: The Emigration Of The Family Marbacher, Manfred Aregger

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Working on a list of the members of the Parliament of Ct. Lucerne from the district Entlebuch, I have attempted to identify all of these cantonal representatives, to discover their life dates, and to present their biographical data. The extant accessible sources provide the desired detail with but one exception. Although parish records concerning Anton Marbacher of Escholzmatt, born 1780, member of the Large Council from 1833 to 1839, provide the date of his baptism and marriage, they are silent about the date of his death, as are sources of other communes and those available in the State Archive of …

This was a relatively smooth and simple procedure. However, the chief object of incorporating our society was reached only after considerable aditional effort.

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Just who are the Swiss who have come to the United States? What was their plce of orgin, what were their motivtions, where did they go, and what impact did they have in their adopted country? The names of the most understanding individual Swiss are known: Gallatin, Agassiz father son, Sutter... as well as the existence of some Swiss settlements: New Glarus, Wisconsin, the two New Berns of North Carolina and Indiana, and Vavay, Switzerland Country, Indiana. But what of the thousands and thousands of Swiss who emigrated from the homeland and the many settlements established by them? What patterns …
