Dear Members of the SAHS,
Membership is a key concern to us and unfortunately this year we have lost three members here in Switzerland. One due to death, Dr. Lucie Zehnder; one member, Anselm Zurfluh, has asked to be taken off the list, and The Institut des Suisse Dans le Monde is closed. Christine von Graffenried has cancelled membership as of 2023 so that will be reflected in 2023.

This is in response to your message dated 8-20-99 and faxed 8-26-99. After much thought and discussion we have come to the conclusion that a further involvement of the SAHS in the planning of a Swiss American Center to be located in New Glarus has to be suspended to enable the SAHS President to consult by mail the members of the SAHS Board of Advisors as well as the SAHS membership in order to reach a decision whether the SAHS can be a partner in that project as now pursued. The extensive discussions of the past months and especially also …

This year the Swiss members of the SAHS held their traditional meeting on Saturday, October 9, 1999 in St. Gallen's Washington House. Despite the first signs of winter - windy conditions and low temperatures characteristic for the region at this time - Dr. Marcel Mayer of the City Archive of St. Gallen first took some thirty guests on a tour of St. Gallen's merchant houses typical of the City's 19th and 20th centuries' textile industry. After the American Civil War the textile merchants began to trade successfully with the United States and built for themselves luxurious and richly decorated houses, …

He expressed the Society's thanks to His Excellency, Ambassador Alfred Defago for hosting this meeting and to staff Member Ms. Florence Nicole for having so efficiently taken care of all the local arrangements. The book is a facsimile reproduction of the 1833 edition, a small volume appealing in appearance and pleasant to hold. It describes, in the form of a diary and letters, the experiences of a group of Swiss who emigrated to the prairies of Illinois. Two-thirds of it are devoted to the Journey, the ordeal of "getting there": from Sursee to Base l, through France to Havre, on a three-master to New York and over rivers and canals to St. Louis, Missouri the last stepping stone efore settling in Illinois.

A majority of them have joined the Stanford Club of Switzerland and, thanks to it, have made acquaintances which they would otherwise have almost certainly missed making. In 1929, four years before Hitler came to power in Germany, C.G. Jung published an essay on "Women in Europe". In this essay the Swiss psychologist , no doubt a shrewd observer, also deals with a few general aspects of the human situation of that time. He discovers tendencies in the minds of many of his contemporaries . First "a growing disgust at one sided attitudes which do not make sense" . He was thinking, among other things, of the increclible chaos of doubtful, dogmatic philosophies of the late 1920's, many of which were offered as promises of salvation to …
