Vormärz Of Germany And The Critique Of Heinrich Heine, Andrew Dean Henley
Vormärz Of Germany And The Critique Of Heinrich Heine, Andrew Dean Henley
Dissertations and Theses
The conclusion of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars marked the beginning of the modem world. In western Europe new ideals about the position of the individual and the future of society flourished in the early nineteenth century--prior to the revolutions of 1848. However, the forward move into the modem world was stymied in the multitude of states which composed Germany after 1815. Due to a combination of factors- political repression, conservative/romantic trends, social lethargy, and liberal immaturity--German society in the period 1815-1848--the Vormärz (pre-March 1848) clung to traditional ways. The most famous German writer of this period, Heinrich …

The National German-American Alliance, 1901 -1918: Cultural Politics And Ethnicity In Peace And War, Charles Thomas Johnson
Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation is to tell the story of the National German- American Alliance, an organization of middle to upper-middle class well-educated professionals formed in 1901 to promote and preserve aspects of German culture in the United States. Increasingly, however, it found itself drawn into controversial political and diplomatic issues in the rapid political, social and international change that marked the first two decades of the twentieth century.
The dissertation begins with a review of German-America from colonial times to 1899 and serves as a background for the founding of the Alliance within the context of the growth …

Swiss American Historical Society Review
Promptly at ten a.m. President Karl J. Niederer called the business meeting to order. He noted that since the Swiss Town House had been sold, this was the first time that we have met in another New York City location. He expressed the thanks of the society to Rosa Schupbach, a member of the Board of Advisors, for having found the location in the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church and for having so efficiently taken care of the local arrangements. He also acknowledged Richard Frey of the church staff for his help.

The Golden Age Of Roman Helvetia, H. Dwight Page
The Golden Age Of Roman Helvetia, H. Dwight Page
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Any traveller who had visited the region of present day Switzerland in the first century before Christ and who could have returned there three centuries later at the end of the second century of the Christian era would have been astonished by the differences between the two periods. Whereas the pre-Roman country of the Helvetii had been a vast forest whose inhabitants had lived in rudimentary hilltop oppida and had spent their lives hunting, fishing and tilling the soil of small farms, the Roman province of Helvetia in the third century after Christ was a prosperous nation whose citizens lived …

The Russo-Polish War, 1919-1920: A Bibliography Of Materials In English, John A. Drobnicki
Publications and Research
As World War I came to an end, the borders in Central and Eastern Europe were tenuous, and in some cases non-existent, and several countries came into territorial conflict. The battle between Poland and the Soviet Union was a pivotal event in twentieth century history, as Poland not only dealt the Red Army its first defeat, but also greatly expanded the territory of the fledgling Polish Republic to its historic, pre-partition borders.
From The Printing Press To The Guillotine: Gracchus Babeuf And The Revolutionary Language Of Thermidor, David Brian Audley
From The Printing Press To The Guillotine: Gracchus Babeuf And The Revolutionary Language Of Thermidor, David Brian Audley
Dissertations and Theses
The traditional history of Franc̦ois-Noel 'Gracchus' Babeuf has been centered on politics and socialism. Since his death in 1 797 historians have attempted to show the foundations of nineteenth and twentieth-century social revolution and communism in the polemical works of Babeuf. One result of this method of research has been an assumption of contradiction within Babeuf's writings in the months immediately following the fall of Maxmilien Robespierre. Historians have assumed that the seemingly anti-Robespierrist rhetoric found from September 1794 to February 1795 was both a product and an evidence of the 'Thermidorization' of Babeuf. However, a close textual analysis of …

Thompson Document 17: Letter From Henrietta Thompson To Bridget Croft, Henrietta Thompson
Henrietta Thompson Papers
A letter from Henrietta Thompson to Bridget Croft warmly praising Croft’s A Sense of Purpose, which she had just received, and expressing her hope that Croft will attempt to have it published. Thompson also includes the abstract from her thesis which details the process by which she found Jack Croft and began corresponding with him in 1973.
Thompson Document 16: Letter From Bridget Croft To Henrietta Thompson And Two Selections From Croft's Manuscript, Bridget Croft
Thompson Document 16: Letter From Bridget Croft To Henrietta Thompson And Two Selections From Croft's Manuscript, Bridget Croft
Henrietta Thompson Papers
Two selections of the manuscript that Bridget Croft sent to Henrietta Thompson on Feb 16, 1997. The first page describes Croft’s childhood in Ireland. The second selection is Croft’s description of the “allied” retreat from Burma. She describes the “hot and tough” trek by the Stilwell group, quoting sections of Henrietta Thompson’s work, but she also describes the retreat of the British Army. She takes the position that “the retreat [of the British Army] was made more difficult by large numbers of refugees trying to escape from Burma.” She fails to mention that the refugee families fleeing their bombed cities …

Switzerland: 2050, Natalie Jomini
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Today, in the year 2050, Switzerland has changed immensely over the past fifty years. From watches to robots, Switzerland has redefined technology. Advances and difficulties overcome have propelled the Swiss to world leadership in many areas. Swiss industry, although maintaining past trends, has championed and led the world into an era of Artificial Humanoidal Intelligence (AHi). This robotics movement has changed the world's standard of living. Swiss hero, Maggie Meier, developed one of the first artificial humanoids, and the industry has taken off since then. In addition, Swiss continue their supremacy in pharmaceutical production. The country has pursued a vigorous …

Mari Sandoz: Portrait Of A Swiss American Author, Laura Villiger
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Land of Promise, where the gold flows, where buffaloes roam in big herds attracting adventurous hunters, where Redskins are chased and defeated by cowboy heroes-these are some of the ideas people in the 19th century commonly held about the American West. Even today, the Old West is often associated with the same pictures. But we also know today that these pictures largely belonged to a myth--a myth propagated in Europe as well as in the so-called 'civilized' East of the American continent. It helped to take hold of the Western territory not only in people's minds, but also in reality.

Swiss American Historical Society Review
Racine's work treats two subjects: the Society and the contents of the Swiss-American Historical Society Review. After a brief overview of the Society's first decades following its 1927 founding in Chicago, she traces in detail its evolution since 1965. The structure of the organization and the gender, educational, and geographical distribution of the membership are discussed. Although the diplomat Lukas Burckhardt reorganized the Society in 1965, the author fails to underscore his important role, while she does stress the leading part that academics--especially historians--have played. She-stresses Leo Schelbert's many contributions to the history of Swiss-American immigration, offering a review …
