Reconstructing Shabazz : Images Of The Black Man In Four Black Plays, William Charles Thompson

Master's Theses

When Elizabeth I ascended the throne in 1558, she was confronted with a changing economic situation. English industry, which had for centuries been localized in the towns under guild control, was maturing and becoming national in scope. In accordance with the prevailing economic precepts of the age, Elizabeth desired to bring industry under a system of national regulation. Such a system of regulation was, however, even for the strongest and most ingenious of the Tudor autocrats, a difficult and elusive goal. Plagued throughout her long reign by a shortage of funds, Elizabeth simply could not afford to involved the state …

The Reconciliation Of Science And Religion In Symbolo-Fideism, Shirley Brown Moon Jan 1968

The Reconciliation Of Science And Religion In Symbolo-Fideism, Shirley Brown Moon

Wayne State University Dissertations

From the publication in 1859 of On the Origin of Species by means of Natural Selection, religion was in open warfare against science. By the end of the century the war was not going well for religion. Biology, anthropology, archeology, the "higher criticism" united in an attack on Christian premises, while "applied science" — technology-provided, the materialistic comforts which made Christian promises utopian and unnecessary. The reaction of some Protestant and Catholic leaders to this threat from science was a retreat into fundamentalism. Others hastened to show that the recent discoveries were not really in conflict with religious truths at …

The Soviet System And The Historian: E.V. Tarle (1875-1955) As A Case Study, Sidney Robert Sherter Jan 1968

The Soviet System And The Historian: E.V. Tarle (1875-1955) As A Case Study, Sidney Robert Sherter

Wayne State University Dissertations

Ever since the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, Soviet leaders have viewed the field of history as the most political of the social sciences. Soviet historiography, as a result, has been conditioned by political events; and Marxist-Leninist ideology, also affected by politics, has been used as its philosophical justification.

The flexibility of Soviet ideology has created an almost insurmountable obstacle for the historian. The ra tionale behind historical scholarship has been and still is utility, with the historian being used as a tool in support of ideological or political platforms proposed by the Party. As an employee of the state, the …

History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Ireland Since 1840, Brent A. Barlow Jan 1968

History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Ireland Since 1840, Brent A. Barlow

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis pertains to the efforts of the Mormons in establishing their Church among the Irish and is arranged to give a chronological account of activities there. A brief background of the establishment of Christianity in Ireland and a knowledge of numerous conflicts between Catholics and Protestants helps to understand the complex religious interaction occurring at the time Mormonism was introduced in that country. The difficulties encountered by the first Mormon missionaries in Ireland suggest reasons why the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints did not expand as rapidly as it did elsewhere in Britain and other European countries. …
