Obituary For Leo Schelbert, Fred Steiner

Swiss American Historical Society Review

A major scholar of Swiss history and Swiss Americans, his connection with the Swiss-American Historical Society was inseparable, as he helped shaped the Society’s direction.

He served the Society as co-editor of the Review with Heinz K. Meier (1970-1986), as president (1975-1980), as sole editor of the Newsletter/Review (1980-2002), co-editor with H. Dwight Page (2002-2006), as editor of the Society’s book series (1981-2013), and as a member of the editorial board for the book publications.

This work of nearly 500 pages presents a rich harvest of documents, data, and insights, derived from Jeremy Dupertuis Bangs' painstaking and expert effort as editor, translator, and interpreter. He first offers a concise introduction concerning the letters which had been exchanged mainly between Louise Guillermin Dupertuis (1848-1914), an 1889 immigrant to Kansas, and also some of her children, with Elise ( 1851-1931) and Isa line (b. 1841) Guillermin, the sisters of the book's title. America or, more precisely stated, the British colonies in North America, was for the residents of Zurich of the 17th century a very distant region, about whose attributes the strangest information was circulated. The embodiment of the various colonies was Carolina, for whose settlement the recruiter's drum was beaten in Switzerland. The Neuenberger Jean Pierre de Pury solicited with a small tract for settlers for his newly founded settlement Purysburg in South Carolina and thereby created the impetus for a great emigration movement out of Canton Zurich . Like most white South Carolinians of my generation, I have various strands of European ancestry: Scots-Irish, English, German, Swiss, and since my name is "Williams," probably Welsh by way of England, then Ulster. However, it was the Swiss strand that I was most conscious of when growing up because I knew a little more about it. A grandmother often talked to us children about "our people," about "dear old Grandfather," whose own grandfather had come from Switzerland in the mid-eighteenth century: George Sightler (Seitler, Siteler, Sitler); and we had a written history of his family in South Carolina.
