This issue of the SAHA news letter is late due to the fact that it was more difficult than usual to get the materials together. We still plan to publish three letters in 1977 as we have become accustomed during the past five years.

It is my sad duty to inform the members of the Swiss American Historical Society of the recent death of Emil J. Schaefer. Emil Schaefer was born on May 10, 1892, in Zurich and came to this country in his late teens. After some traveling he settled in Madison, Wisconsin, where he worked in several capacities, founded a family and became one of t he active members of a number of Swiss organizations.

The present newsletter contains four items which, hopefully, will be of interest to SAHS members. Professor Heinz K. Meier presents the fourth part of his history of the Swiss American Historical Society. He shoes with much tact and lucidity how the organization almost vanished in the late 1950's and how its revival occurred largely due o the efforts of Dr. Lukas F. Burckhardt, then Cultural Counselor of the Embassy of Switzerland in Washington.

Dear Compatriots and Friends:
Summer is here already, and soon Americans and Swiss will celebrated their respective days of National Independence. To commemorate these events I am pleased to include in this newsletter two addresses which were given last year in Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts, on those festive occasions.

Dear Compatriots and Friends:
I is the major task of this newsletter to report to the members of the SAHS on the eighth annual meeting which was held on November 20, 1971, at the Swiss Embassy in Washington. Some twenty people attended and much important business was transacted. The participants very much wished that more of you could have been there to help in the decision-making process and to enjoy the gracious and cultured hospitality extended to the SAHS by Dr. and Mrs. Hans Muller.

Report Of The President Of The Swiss American Historical Society For 1969, Dr. Heinz K. Meier
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
The year of 1969 was an outwardly quiet one as far as SAHS matters were concerned. I knew when I was reelected to the presidency of the society at the last annual meeting in New York a year ago that its affairs had been well handled and that everything was in good order. This excellent state of affairs was the result of the work of a fine board of officers who performed their duties with care and dispatch. I was lucky to inherit a state of reliable men from m predecessor, Dr. Augustin Maissen. Everyone of them, Dr. Leo Schelbert, …

With this newsletter we enter the second year of the revived Swiss- American Historical Society. We hope that it wil.l be as good a year for the Society as 1965 was. In order to do this we not only must maintain our present membership , but enlarge it and keep it growing. We also have to work toward achieving the noblest and most important goal of the existence of our Society, namely to make available in published form results of research and investigation of matters concerning Switzerland and the United States . From information we receive we conclude that there …
